You don't have to believe me. I posted on CrackBerry a month ago Telus was launching the 9630 on June the 22nd. As of right now, 6-7-09, it's still set to launch on the 22nd.
@Neomonkey, yes it's correct. The 9630, just like the 9530, technically supports NA UMTS/HSPA frequencies, however they are locked down. When the 9630 goes to market it will only support the 2100MHz UMTS/HSPA bands.

really, it actually has the NA hspa bands available? What chipset is this and do you have a link that suggests this?
right, they may be 'locked down' but to what degree? A software block can always be bypassed. it's just such a shame that we dont have NA HSPA bands on this phone. Its the only thing thats keeping me from buying it. So thats why it would be a smart idea to unlock those bands and support the newly coming network !
there are different configurations for the RF module of the chipset. Looking at page 3 it does seem possible that the case above is true. but doing a little of googling shows that the storm has the Qualcomm RTR6500 CDMA/EV-DO, Qualcomm RTR6285 Multi-band UMTS/Quad-band GSM RF modules. (http://www.phonewreck.com/wiki/index...ckBerry_Storm).
so i guess the hardware does support all hspa bands. my guess would be that the software is disabling it. and possibly there may be support for hspa on the tour with the proper unlocks. anyone care to share ideas about this? hopefully the more experienced people.

Here is a diagram from PW after they tore down the 9530. As you can see from the spec sheet, NA UMTS/HSPA frequencies is supported. Furthermore, some Engineering Units have NA HSPA enabled.

save u guys some back and forth. was the na 3g ever unlocked on the storm? can it be hacked? or is it all up to rim? cuz if its all up to rim theres really no point in arguing this since rim definitely wont unlock it.
this is where windows mobile comes in handy theres nothing u cant unlock

now will it be possible to do this?! i would think so, and i would definitely hope so...
it makes sense that telus would request that this be enabled...allowing users to have the best of both worlds.
Why do people care so much whether or not it has NA HSPA bands? It will already work in NA with EVDO. Even the small bandwidth improvement will barely be noticeable with a BB...

I think its because people want to move to sim cards and the fact u can do voice and data at the same time on hspa.

you hit the nail on the head there. also you will have more roaming options. and it would just be nice to know that you're buying a phone that wont be obsolete by the end of the year.
