The Touchscreen on my beloved Tmobile HD2 just stopped working. :-(
Thanks to the Gurus here, I didn't jump ship and abandon my Tzones when the Merger loomed, and now that the Merger has been trashed, I wanted to come back for more sage advice.
As mentioned above, my Tzones capable, dual booting, custom WM Rom, and CM7 Cynanogen 7 Android running do it all phone, is essentially dead in the water. Still boots, can receive calls, but with the touchscreen not registering, it's the worlds most hackable paperweight.
I was blessed to be able to buy it outright 2yrs ago, unfortunately the economy being what it is, I will not be able to just go out and buy a new handset. Fortunately, in my sig, I have my omina to fall back on so that I have a phone, but will be back in the purgatory of 2G again.
My question to you knowledgable folks is, What is the best upgrade path to take and still retain use of my 5.99 Tzones? At the moment, I can't afford to just go get the latest and greatest lock stock and barrel. Truth be told, I'd like to try to get my HD2 fixed, but as great as it was/is the itch to get a new phone was starting to become unbearable. I'm out of contract, and out of desperation, I almost picked up the phone to try to see if I could get into a Galaxy S2 on Tmob, I'm glad I came here first, cause from what I read in this thread, that would be the kiss of Death to my Tzones. The larger form factor/Screen of the HD2 has spoiled me, for my next new phone, can't go any smaller, has to at least be 4.3" or bigger, screen wise. What would my options be handset wise? Like a few others in the thread, I've been following the Samsung Note like a stalker. I wish Tmob was getting it, but it doesn't look likely. I heard it mentioned that the Telus version of the Note will work on Tmobs Faux G, so in theory that means Tzones would work, correct? Might take a while, but If I gotta save up to stay out of contract, and keep my Tzones, then that's just what I'll have to do, but I wanna know what my choices are and that Tzones will still work.
Sorry for the novel, I'm just still in shock over my beloved HD2 spazzing out on me after 2yrs of flawlessness. Thank you guys in advance for any guidance.
If it's going to take some time for you to save up, I think most of us would be hard-pressed to recommend a phone for you because there'll be a bunch of new phones announced with full specs(nothing good with 1700/2100 yet) in a couple weeks. I'm also feeling the upgrade itch since I've had my X10i for almost two years, so I'm waiting to see the offerings. But for now, the only thing I can think of would be the Nexus S(edit: or Galaxy Nexus).

I don't want to encourage people to fraudulently take advantage of insurance/warranty through T-Mobile, but they're running 'open enrollment' this month for insurance and warranty. So long as your phone registers on the network and has been used on your account, you can exchange it. Personally, I chose the $3.99 warranty on both my lines. That one covers only malfunction, but there's no deductible. Normally you can only add insurance when you buy the phone, but like I said, open enrollment this month.
If I were you, I'd add the extended warranty (at a minimum) then wait a bit and go to the store and do an exchange. They don't have any HD2s for warranty exchanges, so you'll end up with an HD7 or Radar 4G, depending on warehouse stock the day you go. I just exchanged a Touch Pro 2 (mint condition, but collecting dust and laggy as hell) for a Radar 4G. Would have liked an HD7 for the bigger screen but the Radar 4G is newer hardware and I like the phone a lot.
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 is my drug of choice.

Primary: T-Mobile Galaxy S II & HTC Radar 4G| Nokia Lumia 710: 3 lines FT 500 + SMS/MMS + myFaves + $20.00 preferred data (5GB), plus corp discount and $10/mo loyalty credit @ $87/mo tax inclusive Secondary: VM Optimus Slider: 300min + SMS/MMS + unlimited data @ $25/mo, Samsung R455C: TracFone PAYG
Is the $20 preferred data 4G and is it "legit" for all phones? By legit I mean, technically, I'm not supposed to be using my HD7 with T-Zones, but I can. However, if I call or log into T-Mo to make any changes, they require me to also update my data plan.
If I go this route, then I will be paying $59 (family plan) + $10 (family texting) + $60 (3-line preferred data) - $10 (loyalty credit). So that would be $45 more per month than what I'm paying now ($1080 total), but I may be able to swing 3 free, almost free Galaxy S II. I guess I would have to think about the math a little more.
So do I just call up CS, ask for the retentions dept, and ask for all of the above? What do you guys say when CS asks you what phone you are using with T-Zones? Don't they already know I'm using a phone I'm not supposed to?
They don't care what phone you're using on what data plan. You'll have to talk to the loyalty department aka retention, but keep in mind it's very YMMV on what they'll offer. It helps to know what they CAN offer, so you know when it's a good deal. How I did it was.. Call them and tell them I'm out of contract and am looking to renew for the Galaxy S II but I really need to keep the cost down for my plan. I mentioned that I was thinking about the iPhone. The previous time I called they mentioned the $10/mo loyalty credit so I told the rep "Okay. I'll renew if you can give me what you've just offered, plus the $10/mo credit the previous rep mentioned. I will renew RIGHT NOW." -- that sealed the deal.
Ive been with them for 4+ years. Out of contract after 2 but still, i feel i should be able to get said credit. I have a 15% off discount already.
Obviously, it's a retention tool so you'll have to renew your contract to get it. I got it on my account, my aunt's account, and my gf got it on her account. The only catch is that your MRC [Monthly Recurring Charge] can't go lower than what you're already paying. They basically apply it when you add data or some other feature, to offset the increase. They won't just put it on your account as-is to make your bill $10/mo cheaper.
Some people/reps will tell you it won't stack with a corp discount but it does. Makes for a really good deal.

Thanks for the suggestion! I can't even begin to guess what I did with the receipt, Heck I'm not even sure the Radio Shack I got it from is still there or not. Would I need a receipt to return it if I purchased the warranty from Tmob? If anything in this thread I found on XDA is true, then I'll either suffer with my Omnia, or if I can do as you suggested, and get an HD7 (practically same phone, just no Android hack yet :-( or the Radar, and then try to save pennies for a Bell Canada Samsung Note, which looks like it has the Tmob 3G bands, See the following link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...6#post22530486

My apologies for going OT...
Maybe old info for you but did you know that most of the HD2 touch screen problems are related to a problem with the flex wire beneath the red End Call button? Apparently, after repeated pressing over time, the flex becomes damaged and the phone doesn't actually shut off and lock correctly, leaving it in a state that causes the screen to become unresponsive even though there's really nothing wrong with it. That's why most of the "old timers" in the xda HD2 forums install and use soft keys like Tablet Tweaks, Screen Off & Lock, Button Savior, etc.
If you pull the battery and get the phone started again, does the touch screen start working again?

Thanks for the response! Yes I've done the battery pull, multiple times. Searched youtube vids, tried everything. Screen doesn't respond. Phone is perfectly fine as you said, just can't get to anything. Funny enough, on the CM7 Android Rom I was dual booting with, I did have soft buttons installed. Didn't know they had it for WM 6.5, wish I'd known before now, lol. I even reflashed a different ROM, flash went fine, phone took the new ROM, but I cant get off the get started screen where it says skip for the keyboard screen.
I'll be trying to save my pennies, still trying to weigh getting it fixed verses getting something maybe used thats a lil newer. I know there hasn't been an Heir Apparent to the HD2's flexibility, that's what I was really trying to hold out for. But if this Canada version of the Note turns out to support Tmobs 3G, (eagerly awaiting confirmation from XDA) then I'll just wait till I can buy one outright. Might Settle for an HTC sensation off of Ebay, they work with Tzones as well, if I can find a decent enough deal.

How do you add the insurance/warranty plan to an existing line? Do you have to call in? or is there a link within t-mobile? Thx.
wheres the best place to buy the incredible s s710e? lowest price ive been able to find is 408.50 through negrielectronics.com

Been looking around for cheap phones for tzones/web2go and found some deals. Still unsure whether the Google Nexus S is better than these are not - I personally like stock android and no sense, but its hard to pass up on a dual core 1gb ram phone like the sensation.
this panache brand new for $255 shipped. though im not sure if it needs to be unlocked or anything.
sensation does look nice on paper but ive read that it has some issues such as dust getting underneath the screen, poor reception and poor wifi signal and poor real world performance aside from quadrant scores that makes me kind of hesitant to buy it

I didn't have an HD2, but I do have an Incredible S and it is Very smooth and snappy. I haven't noticed lag at all and Much better than my X10(same hardware as HD2) stock for stock.
To those who have the Lumia 710 on tzones/web2go do you get 4g speed or is it limited to 3g speed?
That's the phone I'm going for, just waiting till my full upgrade date (next week) to buy from the tmo website. I have considered calling retentions to see if they can offer the phone for lower, but didn't know if they'd make me add a preferred $20 data. Anyone have any luck? I know one poster said he had to upgrade his one line (Nexus) to the $20 but they left the line with the HTC Radar on the tzones/web2go. So, that's why I was curious if they'd make me upgrade my data ....
