    Smile Prepaid in Gaithersburg

    Hi!
I'm an older gadget-lover in Gaithersburg. I got a Virgin Mobile phone in 2006, which has given good value for over 3 years. The main limitation seemed to be that it didn't work in airports. Now it does work in airports, but I'm switching to T-mobile anyway, just to have a new experience.

I don't actually have a lot of chatty friends right now, so the phone is partly a hobby activity. I got an unlocked Nokia 6133 from a vendor on eBay and ordered the SIM from t-mobile.com . That model used to be one of the nicer phones in the Tmo stores, as it is quad-band and has GPRS and EDGE, but not 3G.

I am on the prepaid plan and look forward to "going gold" with a $100 payment in a couple weeks. When my investments perk up, I look forward to some foreign travel and shopping for a prepaid SIM in Thailand or Germany.

So, I am not enrolled for the 2G service, just voice. The coverage has been good all around Gaithersburg. Also in Boston last month.

I believe I read that we'll get coverage in a few of the big subway stations such as Gallery Place-Chinatown and Metro Center, as early as this month, October. I did not detect any signal at Metro Center on Sunday the 11th. Later, we'll have a signal in the tunnels, but a few stations are supposed to get service right away. Any update would be exciting.

In less than 24 hours actually ;-) It'll be in Metro's 20 busiest stations.

Signals in more DC subway stations.

Today, 2012 June 7, I rode the Washington DC red line from Shady Grove to Gallery Place/Chinatown. The first underground station is of course Medical Center. It seemed like my T-mobile GSM service had a signal in almost every underground station. A news article in the fall of 2011 says "The work at Metro’s 47 underground stations is about 75 percent complete." Hooray for us.

I have never gotten a signal in the tunnel really, just in or near the stations. Here is the article link:

There is tunnel coverage between Potomac Ave and Capitol South now. Popped up about 3 months ago.
