if they're waiting for the new one... then why would they discontinue the 16gb?? i'd find it hard to believe they'd come in with a 32GB and 64GB...
I doubt they'd even release a new iPhone this year... 3.0 is the big thing this year.... new iphone next year to meet up with all the 2 year contracts ending....

Remember that the itouch and iphone essentially use the same memory, but the itouch as 2 slots while the iphone just has one (the other being used by the phone piece). So if a 32GB iphone were to come out, it means that a 64GB itouch would be released as well. And for a 64GB iphone, we need a 128GB itouch (wow).
32GB iphone likely, but not 64GB...
As for th new 3rd gen iphone, I'm certain it will happen in June/July... Remember that it will mark the 2 year anniversary of the original release in the US. All these people took 2 year contracts which are up for renewal now... Sounds like the best time to do this.

The people who bought the original iphone will be coming up to their 2yr
contract in June, not everyone upgraded to the 3G. Its perfect time for Apple to release a new handset. If they wait another year, the competition is going to take advantage of it.

The new iPhone won't be "4g" as in "4G wireless network", as no 4G wireless network is in sight yet. Keep in mind that iPhone 3G stands for iPhone for 3rd generation wireless network; while the iTouch 2G stands for 2nd generation iTouch. The "g" means different things on different products. iPhone 3G is actually a second generation iPhone, but they don't call it using the other "g".
I don't know what "slots" the other poster mean on the memory size in iPhone and iTouch. From pictures of innards of iPhone, it seems that the memory chips are soldered on the main board directly, and not mounted on any "slots". So I have no idea what you mean by "iTouch w/ 2 slots" etc.
Um, no. And there is no such thing as an "iTouch."

OS 2.0 was released in conjunction with iPhone 3G. iPhone OS 3.0 is coming and I think it is very likely that a new phone will appear at the same time. I am pretty sure there are unannounced features for OS 3.0 that will require a new model. One might be video.
If it is video and if it is a front facing camera, then I think they will include what has until now been a major omission in the bundled apps. Apple promotes iChatAV a fair bit on their Macs. Why not include even a basic iChat client just for IMs up until now? I think they are waiting to support full AV with their iChat client, which would mandate a forward facing video camera.
I do think a new model will be released in the summer. It's name will possibly be iPhone AV, not just because of iChat, but because it will also have MMS (from OS 3.0), video recording, video uploading to MobileMe, audio recording, etc .

It could also be because Fido is moving away from offering premium handsets since they have positioned themselves as a no frills carrier.
OR clearing out stock for 3rd generation!
Hrm. Are they really moving away from launching premium handsets? I mean, they have recently launched their first BlackBerry device and accompanying BIS service. Of course, the device in question is the BlackBerry Pearl 8100, which was considered a premium device when Rogers launched it - in October, 2006.
Ugh. Well, they certainly aren't moving towards launching premium handsets.
Still, let's hope we can take this as a sign of an impending hardware refresh in mid-2009. Other than the OS refresh, this is one of the most telling signs so far. As well, I work for R+, and the most recent iPhone shipment we received was so massive that we couldn't help but interpret it as the clearing out of 'old product'.
The salesperson in me wants a hardware refresh, so I can sell it. The consumer in me wants a hardware refresh, so I can caress it.
I'm still sticking with the only upgrade we'll see this year is a 32GB iPhone... and the phasing out of a 8GB iPhone...
As much as anyone I would love to see a new version of the iPhone coming out.. but I think it's more of a pricing issue...
Rogers has driven Fido towards a very specific price sensitive client... If you guys can recall just a few months ago there were a ton of rumours stating fido would be phasing out the iPhone all together...
Now.. if we start to see other carriers phasing out the 16GB's or 8Gb's then I would start getting excited...
But I stand by my thought that all we will see in terms of an update this summer if we see one at all is the introduction of a 32GB iPhone 3G... simply a increase in memory
