LG Rumor FAQ for Virgin Mobile Canada

    LG Rumor FAQ:

    Q) Why an FAQ just for the LG Rumor?

    A) One of the main reasons is the lack of actual support, and information about the phone. Unlike other phones, the LG rumor is rather popular, however the amount of information and what one can do with it is very lacking, and often times even if one can find information, it's usually gone the next day as moderators on other cellphone forums lock them for users posting only questions about the LG Rumor, and not actually answering the Op's question, just spamming it up with OMG ANSWER ME I NEED HALP RINGTONES NAO.

    Q) Why one just for Virgin Mobile Canada?

    A) Virgin Mobile Canada /really/ lacks in information about this phone. Most the time if you google information, you are left at a blank as everyone assumes you are on Sprint, and, a lot of the time people expect you to be on Sprint to answer your questions, which, sometimes doesn't help.

    Q) OMFG LG RUMOR SUX ITS JUS 4 TEENZ WHO WIL GET A NEW CELL EVERY X-MAS!!!211/1 IT HAS SO MANY ORPELMS

    A) The LG Rumor, when, Sprint first started offering it, yes, it had major problems. However, most of these problems were fixed simply by a firmware upgrade. Some of the older models had a few hardware issues, but, LG has fixed most, if not almost all of that. Virgin Mobile has it's own custom firmware which has most, if not all the software based issues fixed as well.

    Q) How do I get ringtones on my LG Rumor?

    A) One of the most frequently asked questions, can all be answered by a simple youtube video. Trust me, it worked for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kppNO_J8DWQ

Only thing you /need/ to do is go to a 3rd party website called: http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php

Yes, it says Sprint, but, it's not just for sprint. Just get the right email to send it to for your phone.

    Q) I never signed up for the email service on Virgin Mobile!

    A) Just put the area code your cellphone is under, then your cell's number, and then @vmobile.ca. Example: 101-000-0001 would be 1010000001@vmobile.ca. If you are not sure how, send a text message to one of your actual email accounts (like gmail, hotmail, whatever) and then just copy and paste the email address that sent it to you, it should have your phone's number.

    Q) How do I get games working on my phone?

    A) First thing, try not to steal warez. Usually they are for other phones not of your model and will **** up and freeze. You can try freeware/shareware by going to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php and going to the one that says upload apps. All you need to do is put your email from before, /MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A .JAR FILE/, send it to your phone. You'll get a text message and be able to download it.

    Q) I don't have unlimted internet browsing, is there a cheaper way?

    A) Without a USB cable and bitpim, no, you are **** out of luck. Sorry.

    Q) I want a way to get apps and ringtones without paying!!!!!!!!1

    A) Considering most ringtones/apps cost like 2-8 bucks on virgin mobile, using this downloader will only cost like, half a buck, maybe a dollar. Way cheaper, sorry. Not my fault you are a cheapass, you probably illegally downloaded that song, too. But I'm not gonna go there.

    Q) I can't delete the ringtone I downloaded from that site you gave me!

    A) Sorry, I never said that it was a scotch perfect free way, virgin seems to have locked that out, so, you are stuck unless you reset the phone to factory default. :U

    Q) Can I use bluetooth to transfer files?

    A) Actually, yes. But only to the memory card, sory.

    Q) Can I install stuff via memory card/have ringtones/other stuff other than pictures?

    A) No, sorry. Virgin locked that out!

    Q) How do I get my service code?

    A) Tell Virgin Mobile that you keep having problems with your phone like the browser, image texts not working, text messages coming hours later, and 'access denied' errors on the browser when you even try to load a normal mobile web page like google. They should give you your service code to reprogram your phone, as, apparently the problem is always on your end, and never their own. (Seriously, having major problem with their network? REPROGRAM YOUR PHONE, YEAH, THAT'LL WORK PERFECTLY. Not.)

    Q) Will you keep this FAQ updated?

    A) When/if I get a USB cable, I'll show how to use bitpim with it. If I can figure out how to make bluetooth a little bit more accessible oh this phone, I will. And if I figure out anything in general, uh, yeah. :B

    Q) Your FAQ messed up my phone and virgin refuses to fix it/whatever random whining I demand you to fix my problem for free now now now even if you need to sleep or work!

    A) Shut up. Not my fault for your own stupidity. I do not take responsibility if you mess up your phone or some crap.

    Decent write up.

Would like to add to this

    Q) How do I get my service code?

A.1) Plug USB Cable in, run CDMA workshop and click read, done you have all your codes.

A.2) Download the source to bitpim extract, open in your favorite compiler edit the LG Choclate 3 profile replace the chocolate ID with 260V and rename the profile as seen fit. Recompile, run and enjoy automated detection of the Rumor instead of other CDMA device.

Also, the phone has a built in gps chip-set which was locked by virgin, should be a way to unlock it since bitpim allows us to hexdump many things that can be turned on and off with 0)=off 1)=on.

Be sure to backup any files and be ready to manually re-flash the phone if you have to.

A modded bitpim can dump the firmware of the phone, however I'm not 100% sure i want to brick my phone just yet until I find a 110% proof way to unbrick it.

ex; JTAG to a WRT54G, there is a similar device that can serial connect to the MB of the rumor to write to the flash databanks 1 2 and 3, soldering may be required

    Humn.

I heard some LG phones have a similar file system to the Rumor, and thus you can just use them. When Bitpim searches for your phone, it'll shove it under 'OTHER CDMA' but you can set it as LG-VX8700 and it'll detect it, apparently.

I have not yet tested this myself, however. And I'm not quite sure where I remember reading it.

Same problem here. Is there a way to stealth-unlock my browser so I can get some free ringtones? I have my 6-digit code (thank you CDMA Workshop) and now I just want some decent ringtones.
