question about sidekick and data plans

Do you need to have a data plan to use the sidekick? I am looking at picking a used one up to see if it is something my family would like, but I don't want to use it for the net just voice and texting.

You can use it without a data plan, but you won't be able to use AIM or other IM services. Voice and text work just fine. Press menu and L to get past the "Waiting for Activation" screen.
