Today I spoke with both AT&T and Verizon customer service. I also spoke to AT&T and Verizon reps at their individual stores.
Here's what I got.....
When telling Verizon rep I needed my full account number to port one phone number out of 3 Family Shares over to AT&T for an iPhone, he said that he "was not allowed to discuss iPhones". He said that as far as he knew, Apple did not renew their exclusivity agreement with AT&T this past week. Although he wouldn't give out any more info, he did keep repeating that i should "wait until August", before I port my number over to AT&T for the iPhone. There was a nudge, nudge, hint, hint in his tone.
When delaing with the rep at the Verizon store, she also told me that she "was not allowed to discuss iPhones". I told her I wouldn't ask her to answer any more questions, but that I would "read her eyes"
She basically answered me that she believed Verizon was going to get an iPhone, but she thought it was going to be differnet than what is currently out there, and that it would be similar to those pics floating around that show a much smaller cased version. Her opinion was that it would be available around this coming new year (2010). I was surprised, but she also informed me that AT&T's network was better than Verizon's in my area. This was unexpected as she was saying the competition's network was better.
When i spoke with the AT&T rep at the store (a store that does not sell iPhones, so he had nothing to lose by not pushing one on me), he informed me that he also believed that Apple did not renew the exclusivity agreement with AT&T. He stated that "it appears that Apple is pissed at AT&T". He informed me that he too had some kind of info that Verizon was getting the iPhone. I was surprised that any of these persons would say good things about their competitors, but they did....
I don't know if any of the above can be disproved, and if this info is bogus. I'm just trying to report my conversations with reps from both networks.
Given the widespread knowledge that different representatives can and often do give out all kinds of different information (many times that is wrong, exaggerated, not quite right, etc.), there's really nothing to trust or distrust when it comes to these kind of conversations with representatives--it's just another set of information that can essentially be treated as opinion and nothing more (and opinions are really neither right or wrong until what they are about is actually confirmed one way or another as fact down the road). So, ultimately, there's really not much information one way or another.
C DM...my post above you commented upon....I totally agree with you! What struck me as strange was that both Verizon reps, one at corporate cust. serv. and the other in the local store, both gave me the same exact quote that they were not allowed to discuss the iPhone. That sounds like an order from somewhere up their chain. If that order came from corporate HQ, it piques my curiosity! I would more have expected a personal opinion when mentioning iPhone to Verizon (most likely negative, as they would try to push me towards a BB Storm or something else), or a profit motivated answer, but not a we can't talk about it answer. That, at least to me, sounds like corporate has possibly told the employees some sort of info, and then also told them to "keep it under your hat, or else". What info they might have received, if any, I guess remains to be seen.....

or they think saying nothing is better than saying it's a long way off. If you think the iphone could come at any time, you may just wait it out.
In fact I cant find anything that even says "get it now" anywhere in the phone unless I make my own icon that does nothing and label it GET IT NOW
I still stand behind my previous statement that as far as I know smartphones do not have get it now..
If there was a get it now on smartphones then why on their website when you go to features and downloads, and when you order a program why is it that there are separate instructions for smartphones that don't mention downloading it from get it now? Such as let's say vznavigator http://products.vzw.com/index.aspx?i...&appId=2033487
" * Windows Mobile devices: From the Mobile Internet Browser, go to http://mobile.vzw.com and simply select the VZ Navigator icon to download.
Note: Before you download VZ Navigator, call *611 to activate the application on your mobile number. Certain VZ Navigator features are only available through Get It Now and are not compatible on the BlackBerry devices. "

Don't know if this has been posted yet or not, and not willing to look thru pages to see, but watch this thru 1 minute 25 seconds - this is CNET. I realize it is not anything confirmed but see for yourself: http://cnettv.cnet.com/iphone-3g-wai...-50072978.html

Eh, I think that seems to be hinting more at next year though. I want something next month! But I guess I'll settle for a Verizon iPhone LTE next year.

Great find.... I hope it gets released early next year!!!
Yesterday, I happened to see an internal memo from Verizon that specifically mentioned iPhone. I can't tell you what it said as i don't read upside down very well, but it was definitely mentioned on official letterhead.

Assuming it was even a memo and it's true, it could have been simply a reference to the new iPhone coming out and VZW needing to upsell certain services or phones in a particular way to compete better or something to that effect. It could have really been anything, so unfortunatley that doesn't really say much one way or another.

The latest speculation I've heard is that it will be announced in June 2010 and released... Well, that part wasn't said. It'll be announced then because of Apple and AT&T's current contract.
