That doesn't take away from the fact that its used to make it more appealing to non-business customers. The Eternity and Behold are using it because it is appealing and so is the omnia. Just because the omnia is a smartphone doesn't make using touchwiz for appeal any different.
And in regards to why Verizon didn't take it, it was more than just money and poking around. Apple wanted almost complete control over the customers. Apple wanted to have all of the information of the customer when they bought it (SSN was the biggest concern) and they wanted to deal with the phone in apple stores. Thus, if you had a problem, you spoke to Apple directly and they knew all about you. Verizon, in a way, was protecting its customers. Yea, they probably weren't too enthusiastic with the whole money thing, but I am glad they chose to protect us.
Carloa: Where have you been looking for apps? I have tons of them on my touch pro and all were free. Theres no shortage of apps on winmo devices and I was able to find all of mine for free.
i do have to say, i've browsed the app store on the iphone and i must say i was a lil jealous. wish we had that type of variety on the omnia. even the apps avail on the G1 are pretty cool and thats a brand new operating system!!
as winmo users, we have handango but all those programs are pretty much 10 to 20 dollars compared to the 1.99 or even free apps offered on the iphone or G1.
Are you not aware of the thousands upon thousands of free and cheap WM apps? Apple's AppStore doesn't even touch the number of apps available for WM devices. Handango is only one place to get 3rd party apps. There are hundreds more, in addition to that.
A slice of bread will always land peanut butter side down. If, by chance, you put peanut butter on both sides of the slice, it will float forever.
While we were in data training for the Blackberry Storm, Touch Pro and Samsung Omnia the data trainers had said that VZW was in talks with Apple again (Like a previous poster had said Apple came to Verizon first to release the IPhone but wanted too high a percentage of the profits from the data/phone sales that VZW turned it down because it had too low a profit margin) to release the IPhone in 2009 after its exclusivity agreement is through with ATT. If VZW does release it, it won't be the same as it is on ATT we all know that. They'll have to find a way to enable MMS, but I'll be in line. I like the Iphone. All the Execs I've spoken with say they're still glad they didn't contract with Apple due to the returns and warranty exchanges done on the 1st GEN Iphones. That coupled with the amount of money per user that Apple wanted would have given Verizon a negligible profit margin not making it worth their while.
Does anyone realistically think that if the Iphone comes to Verizon it will be ANYTHING remotely like it is now? Unless Verizon changes its policy there won't be any apps for it (based on every other phone that comes out there aren't many/any apps for it).
Yeah, not sure where you get this from.
I use to have a Palm Treo 700P on Verizon and there were a ton of apps for that, just like for my current Verizon Samsung Omnia which is Windows Mobile.
to vzw shane, do you know when the exclusivity agreement ends? i've heard 2009 all the way till 2012.
Everyone in VZW corporate seems to say their GSM exclusivity agreement ends in 2012, but their carrier exclusivity agreement ends in 2009....Both apply to the US only.

Does that mean that it will still have to be a GSM only phone till 2012? Maybe a T-Mobile branded one?

I think what he meant was that they are locked into ATT and GSM until mid 2009. At which point, they are locked into ATT for the GSM version, but may persue other carriers that are not on GSM. ie CDMA or technically, iDen.
In 2012, they can have GSM phones for other carriers.
Possible, the next iPhone could have a CDMA/GSM hybrid chipset much like the Blackberry Storm and Samsung Saga. Hopefully though, Qualcomm makes a quadband 3G GSM/CDMA chip.
This has been asked/speculated on/questioned for awhile now. It would be nice to see a CDMA variant, but ultimately it is going to boil down to the agreement between ATT and Apple.
My opinions are mine and do not reflect on my employer.
