Actually the LG Prada which was released before the iPhone is 0.47 inches deep, making it thinner than the iPhone 3G by 0.01 inch, but I'm just being my annoying self.
The iPhone's performance is not as fast as I would like, though. It's rather sluggish when changing apps, especially when switching from Safari to Mail when in landscape mode. Many times the accelerometer doesn't recognize when the phone is turned horizontally. Anyway, the only reason it looks like it has the performance of a smartphone device, is because it really doesn't have anything.. it's bare to the bone in contrast to other smartphone operating systems. If anything, Symbian S60 is the performance winner in every comparison including feature set and overall "openness".
Despite the iPhone's "smartphone weaknesses", the Safari browser is VERY accurate in rendering pages due to its Webkit engine. Now we'd have nearly the same performance if somebody decided to make a Webkit browser for Windows Mobile... OH WAIT, it's called Iris Browser from Torch Mobile.
Also, I use MMS everyday. It's what people without smartphones use when we need to send multimedia messages. Yes, there's actually people without smartphones!
I wish more phones would make use of the capacitive touch technology, which is what really makes the "wow" factor of Apple's "just works" iPhone. (I'm not quoting you, it's actually used to be part of their advertising slogan-ish thing)
I have never been a fan boy of anything in particular around here, but that statement just simply cannot be further from the truth.
I find it ironic that you argue aadam101's opinion with your own opinion, but state your opinion as though it is fact. I will not get into the whole argument of whether or not the iPhone is greatest device ever or just another overrated phone, but I will say that to claim that aadam's opinion is incorrect is a bit absurd. For every person, there is a different standard of what is perfect and what is not so great. While there are many, many people who enjoy the iPhone for its simplicity and responsiveness, there are just as many people (if not more) who hate it for its closed nature and lack of customization options. We just need to make sure that we remain open to the fact that different people want different things in their devices and there is no universal phone that will make everyone happy.
A slice of bread will always land peanut butter side down. If, by chance, you put peanut butter on both sides of the slice, it will float forever.
I have never been a fan boy of anything in particular around here, but that statement just simply cannot be further from the truth. In fact, I was on my way home Thursday from finally finding an Omnia in a store that wasn't hosed and deciding to buy one and give it a try. Then I stopped at WalMart for something and walking down the aisle saw an iPhone. I picked it up and played with it for a few minutes and it simply blows away any recent phone Verizon has offered from a performance standpoint. Save for some of the older BBs, I've never seen a smartphone that responsive. It does what it does, when you tell it, and that's that. It doesn't require tweaking for better speed or third-party UIs to be more touch-friendly. It just works. For 99% of the public (read: non-HoFo members), this is what smartphones should be. (I will not entertain anyone's alternate definition of "smartphone", either; you know what I mean. They can get email, browse the web and use many data-intensive apps. Not everyone needs a PC in their hands.) While I enjoyed spending hours modifying my WinMo phones, the simplicity of my BB 8703 I had to buy for work is comparatively refreshing. (And before you scream MMS, I bet that's not a huge deal to most people. I never sent one in my life until I was demoing a Storm in November.)
While there are features that are oversold about the iPhone (my favorite being the "we have an app store and the Storm doesn't" when there have been 1000s of free BB, WinMo and Palm apps online for a decade), its performance and simplicity are apparently harder to achieve than I'd have previously thought. It also has the best form factor (thinest) of the all-screen-style phones. The fact that LG nor Samsung nor RIM has produced a phone that slim is nothing to scoff at, either.
That said, I am growing tired of my employer having full access to personal data on my phone and am ready to buy a non-BB and cut the 24/7-ties to work. If there were a CDMA variant of the iPhone on VZW, it would doubtless be in my hands right now. Given it's not likely in the next six months, I will probably get an Omnia to mod to provide the second-most usable touch-screen interface I can find.
Most phones are fast and do what they are supposed to do right out of the box. PC's are the same way. Once you start adding applications to the phone then it's a different story. From what I hear the Apple apps are quite extensive and cost money. I get my apps for free. Once you start adding apps to the iPhone it's going to be just like any other PC like device....slower.
ParthG, I appreciate your reply and stand corrected!
And for the record, I cannot even find the Prada on PhoneScoop, so I'm assuming it wasn't sold stateside? I can't find any record of it being offered through a US carrier. It certainly looks good, but I can't say I'll ever see one. Heck, I've only seen a handful of iPhones in the wild. (BB is required for corporate integration, so most coworkers willing to shell out for data plans go with the 'Berries.)

I guess I've just not seen a Windows Mobile PPC device run quickly out of the box. A smartphone edition, maybe, but even then, nothing as quick as the blackberries and palms I've used. They (the WinMo phones) just seem very labored. But that's only my opnion based on my finite experiences, as Esquire pointed out.
I'm just hoping to hear less of the "iPhone sux; why would anyone want it?" comments around here when it seems they perform the way most non-geeks I know would prefer a device perform. I'd prefer to have something other than an Apple or MS device myself, but like (probably) everyone else here, I'm still waiting on my dream device, too. . .
Hopefully, now, back to the rumors!

Reason: clarity

Some of my most "geeky" friends have and LOVE the iphone. It isnt just for non geeks anymore.

Can the iPhone really download and render graphically intense, full size (ie, not mobile) webpages in under 1/2 a second (as Apple shows in its TV commercials)?

Obviously it's not like the commericials, but I just went back to my ipod touch after using Opera on my Omnia for a month and I was amazed at how much faster the rendering is.

No - not even with wi-fi. Still, the iPhone web experience is the best of any phone out there right now (and in my experience, that's a lot!) ... when Safari isn't crashing!
LOL...probably. Verizon had to gimp something, right?
"Presenting, the iPhone Nano from Verizon Wireless! The same great phone seen on "other" carriers, but 1/3 the size!"
I haven't heard anything about an iPhone Nano, other than wishful thinking, but seriously, if its anything like the iPod...you would have to be Derek Zoolander to use it.
iPhone from ATT doesn't have anywhere near the features I need. Imagine how few would be left after Verizon got hold of it.
From play with it, it would do everything I need it to do...and probably most other people as well. I would love to play with it on VZW and see for myself.
