You guys that think ATT has great service must be on crack or never used their phones except for interstate travel. I have friends on ATT and they are always useing my phone because they have no service.
Travel I57 through mid Illinois. Then run I71 through mid Ohio. If that isn't enough try eastern TN where we 4 wheeler ride. They leave their phones in the truck because there is no reason to carry it.
I would love the Iphone but without the coverage I need it is useless.
I semi-regularly go on I57 to get to CHI, and I get native AT&T service the whole way up (getting on at 70 @ 57). In fact, my Slacker/Pandora app runs the whole time without a problem. Granted, 55 is way nicer (since it is almost 3G coverage the whole way), but I have no problem whatsoever.
71 through Ohio is odd. That is > 50% in 3G coverage. I don't drive this too often, but I had great 3G coverage from west of Cinci to east of Columbus with only a small spat of EDGE in between. I dropped a call between Mansfield/Ashland, but it was a tower handoff problem; I had service. And I got 3G again well before I arrived in Cleveland.
Wow their phones must really suck... No one that I know of has Iphones but they do have ATT. And they always drop calls or have no service. They need to get new phones obviously.
Is it possible that Apple gave AT&T 3g exlcusivitivy rights for the iPad in exchange for bringing a CMDA iPhone to Verizon later down the line?
Someone else here mentioned that AT&T may have offered up the no-contract 3G access for the iPad in exchange to be the exclusive iPhone carrier, which I guess probably makes more sense than my theory.
I can't help but feel like the ipad was release "rushed" for some reason. Perhaps there was a CDMA version in the works, but all the kinks have not been released, so they stuck with the GSM version?

Just to join with all the rumors, I have a friend that is a lawyer for one of the 2 companies (I don’t want to be too specific since I don’t want to get him in trouble).
I asked about the iphone for Verizion. His answer was cryptic but said he cannot confirm when it will be coming out just that it's not in the near future. I told him my contract is up in the next few months and he said that it won't be out that soon.
I know this all sounds like bull and isn’t much info, but it did get me optimistic that sometime this year the iphone will be available for Verizon.

If you have no idea what your talking about and came up with that theory, i applaud you. That's quite an interesting idea, and it could gel with the reports that AT&T was going to lose the exclusivity to the iphone on wednesday. Again this is all theoretical, but Apple wouldnt announce that AT&T lost the exclusive rights to the iPhone, but maybe with the iPad announcement, your theory is what happened. But again its all speculation.
My real pet peeve is im sick of hearing people (not just on these forums) saying "Apple wont bring the iphone to Verizon because they are CDMA". So WHAT? RIM makes different versions of their Blackberry's with CDMA and GSM chips, the manufacturers of Android phones do the same. To say that "Apple weighed the pros and cons and decided it wasnt worth it" Really? the possibility of tapping into a consumer base of 80 million people isnt worth it? Oh.....okay. Yeah..makes sense. Not. If Apple truly believes that more people will jump ship from Verizon to AT&T for the iPhone, they need to realize that just isnt going to happen, and theirs a huge base of people (myself included) that are waiting impatiently for the phone to be released on our network. If Apple doesnt realize this, it makes you wonder if they are somewhat out-of-touch or arrogant to think that their brand is enough to make people sacrifice certain things. I love Apple and i truly want the iPhone, but after this iPad announcement, i just have to question their thinking. I know im not the only one.
My theory: no discernible relationship between iPad on AT&T and a VZW iPhone.
I doubt Apple would give AT&T another extended exclusive - especially for 3G coverage. Jobs is smarter than that. While I could be wrong, i suspect there are other reasons for the initial release this way.
AT&T does not want to announce/publicly-verify the end of their iPhone exclusive for they would lose sales between now and then.
VZW doesn't have anything to gain by early announcement of a coming iPhone. They would probably lose Android sales.
Apple has everything to gain by staying quiet on the matter (which is their M.O. anyway).

looks promising. I really think we will see Verizon/Apple deal announced this year. I think people (including myself) got too excited about the "verizon iphone rumors" last week. But i'm sure they started for a reason. I'm thinking something will pop up in late spring or summer.
I will say that I have seen some pictures on Twitter that are screencaps of an iPhone saying "Verizon" at the top where the carrier goes. Unfortunately they've all been deleted, so I have nothing to back this up (not like they couldn't have just been photoshoped, anyway), but I figure'd I would share.
Unfortunately, I am beginning to believe that any rumors of ANY Apple device coming to Verizon is rumor-mongering from Verizon's camp. They stand to lose more than a few customers by not getting Apple devices. Trying to keep them at bay by feeding these rumors is their way to keep them, I think. That said, I wouldn't classify Verizon's lack of Apple devices as ALL Verizon's fault. Apple has to want to make CDMA versions of its devices first.
We won't know of any Apple device on Verizon until Steve Jobs himself reveals it.
