I'm on verizon right now and i'm just waiting until the new iphone comes out before i make the switch. however, i'm wondering if i should try and get one as soon as it comes out, or would it be wiser to wait a bit? is it likely that the first batch of new iphones sold will have problems with them that will be worked out in about a month or so? if there is a problem with the new iphones that gets fixed with future batches, would apple exchange the original one i bought for a new one? does it take time for apple to work the kinks out when a new iphone is released?
I would see no problem with getting it right away, assuming you live near an Apple store. Whether there will be problems will depend on how much of an update this is. If it's just an update to the internals, then the chances of there being problems would be small. If there are some cosmetic changes, then things could be different. But I still doubt it. This will be the third iteration of this product; Apple has had plenty of time now to learn what works and what doesn't. When it comes to replacements, Apple can't be beat. Just go to the Apple store, explain your problem, and you'll be walking out the door with a new one in five minutes.
If you don't live near an Apple store things might be different. I've never tried exchanging my iPhone at an AT&T store, so I don't know what they're like. I highly doubt it's as simple as it is with Apple.
Again though, I doubt you'll have any problems. Apple's hardware quality is top notch. The problems they've had in the past are usually due to design issues, not cheap materials.

i'm not too close to an apple store, prob 45 mins from the closest one right now. hopefully i'll be moving to boston soon though. i'm thinking of waiting a few days to let the rush die down. we'll see. i just want some official news, damnit!

I have the 3G and if I decide I want the new one I'm going to wait till refurbished ones are offered at half the price. If I didn't have the 3G already I'd probably be hitting the Apple store in the first week it's released.
I'm in the same boat, on verizon now, my wife and I are switching for the iphone in july or when it comes out. We'll probably get it as soon as possible. I'm fairly confident that it'll work out fine. I am also not near an apple store, nearest one probably 2 hours. Oh well, it'll be worth it. Carrying the chocolate 3 and the ipod touch 2g, all the time, it'll be nice to downsize pocket goodies!
all I want is a cool looking, responsive capacitive touch screen, useful keyboard with swype, 10+ megapixel high quality backlit sensor with optical zoom, xenon flash, 64gb storage, bluetooth/infrared/wifi, fm radio, flashlight, open app store, customizable text ringtones, int/ext pic/vid caller id, good battery life, high sensitivity gps chipset, and a responsive open source gui, on a high quality cell phone network with real 4g is that too much to ask?
actually the anticipation, lining up on launch day, and excitement of playing with your new toy as soon as its released is worth the extra few dollars and/or time to me.
Depends on the lines. If they release it at the same prices as now, it doubt it will be too bad. If they drop the entry level iPhone to $99, watch more lines going around the block.
Get it on launch. I am, and if I'm doing, it MUST be good.
Are you sure that you will be able to upgrade on launch? From what I hear, Rogers in Canada has extended its upgrade period from 12 to 24 months for smartphones, meaning that those of us in Canada who upgraded on launch day for the 3G phone will not be able to upgrade to the new unit this July. Now I'm wondering if ATT will continue with their past policy and allow upgrades? Maybe Rogers will follow ATT's lead and make an exception for the iphone....who knows.
