    (UN) Official WebXpress 5800 Thread

I picked one up at a flea market for kicks. Anyone else have one?

    Mini Review:

OS: Unknown, but it's attractive and very responsive
Camera: Not bad for cheap 640x480
Screen: 240x320 touch screen. Auto rotate by "sloshing".
Phone: Quad Band, dual SIM, fairly hot receiver. Clear calls. I have both my T-Mo and AT&T SIMs in at the same time, and can receive calls on either. Choose carrier after dialing for outgoing calls. Got data set up for AT&T, GPRS only.
MP3 Player: Ok, but limited to one folder - no subfolders seen - no media available to evaluate karaoke function.
Photo player: Again, limited to one folder. Auto rotate. Advance with finger slide. I.2 meg file size limit.
MP4 player: Auto rotate. I was able to convert some movie trailers for viewing. Jerky, but may improve with proper conversion settings.
FM Radio: Works, but tinny sounding with headphones supplied. Save stations in memory and add callsign or name.
Memory: MicroSD, comes with 2 gig. All media and java install to this.
Web browser: Functional, but fonts very poor quality. Horrid scrolling. Media streaming does not work. Unfortunately, Google defaults to Chinese version of page. Opera Mini works surprisingly well as an alternative.
PC transfer: By mass storage drive created with USB connection only.
Java support: Apps will load and install via the web browser. In addition, you can create a folder on memory card to copy jar files to. Select jar file with file manager app and java app installs. Any apps with streaming audio/video seem to hang.

The big issue that makes me sorry I got this particular phone, is that there are very few java apps that can be controlled only by touch screen. There is no way to force a virtual keyboard either I expect the touch screen apps will be more prevalent in the future. The apps I have loaded and working are: Weather, Sunclock, Opera Mini, Bolt (web browser), and Calc4m. All Java apps in Games>Java. No way to put shortcuts on main screen.

IMHO, with some tweaks to the included apps, better java apps, and a way to integrate and launch them, they are 90% of the way to a good cheap phone.

I have quickly run out of fun with this device for now, but Treo Pro (Sprint) is on the way.

I am on vacation and don't have it with me. For music, just connect via USB and copy files to music folder.

1122 is usually the default code for Chinese phones.

If it still drops calls with full signal (5-6 bars), return it back to the seller. Also try it with another carrier sim card.
