BoostBerry How-To...everything you need to get the native browser and MMS working

Thanks to many that have contributed to figuring this out and posted info on how to do it....here is one step by step guide on this process. See the second post in this sticky for other threads on this same topic....

I'm using version Version 4.6 and I recommend you do the same although I believe any version 4.1 or greater will work.

This is a critical step that people tend to skip. You must have the OS installed on your PC in order for the Desktop Manager to work correctly and be able to reinstall the browser.
4. Plug in your phone to a USB port and start the BlackBerryDesktop Manager. If it says it needs to upgrade the phone's OS, let it.
If it doesn't say it needs to update go into Application Loader > Add Remove Applications. Again, if it says it needs to upgrade the phone's OS, let it.
The upgrade can take up to an hour so don't panic if it seems hung, just let it finish.
4. On you BlackBerry, close all open apps and delete the Browser (even if you don't see a browser in the menu!) by going to Options>Advanced Options>Applications>Browser, press the scroll wheel and choose delete, confirm the deletion and the option to reboot your phone now.
5. When the phone restarts, go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Service Books hold Alt and hit {A/S}{A/S}{B/N}{E/R}{B/N} (for full QWERTY phones it's Alt + {S}{B}{E}{B}).
A message reading "Legacy SB Restore Enabled" will appear if you did this correctly.
6. Connect your phone to the PC again. In Desktop Manager choose "Backup and Restore" , then "Restore", then browse to and select the MMS_WiFiBrowser.ipd file that you downloaded in step 3.
7. After installing the service books, click Main Menu, then Application Loader > Add / Remove Applications. Check the empty boxes next to the Browser, JavaScript and Help to reinstall them.
8. After the phone restarts you should have a working HotSpot Browser icon and there should be a working MMS option for each entry in your address book and a Compose MMS option in the Messages app.
Gmail, Opera Mini and many other third party data aware apps will also work with this set up.
BlackBerry Mail and the IM apps from BlackBerry will still not work.

I followed these instructions on the 7100i I got today and now I can use the hotspot browser and send MMS, but I can't receive messages? Anyone else have that problem?
How did you fix it? I'm having the same trouble on my 8350.
Aside from that, this how-to is geared towards the older BBs so I have written one for the Curve. If you see any mistakes on it, please let me know.
I put it at http://jezghani.blogspot.com/, and that will be updated as new information hits. However, I will paste it here also (sorry, it's super long!), and attach the service books.
So there were a couple of things I had to do to start with in order for me to get some of my stuff going the way I wanted them to:
1) I had to copy all of my contacts from my SIM card
a) Click on the “Contacts” Icon
b) Click on the Blackberry menu key; Contacts from SIM card
c) Click on the Blackberry menu key; Copy all to Contacts
2) I had to turn off Smart Dialing (+1) dialing to be able to place calls
a) Click on the Green phone icon key
b) Click on the Blackberry menu key; Options; Smart Dialing
1) ENABLE SERVICE BOOK COMPLETE BACKUP / OVER WRITE / RESTORE on the Device, like this:
a) On your device, go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Service Books hold Alt and hit {S}{B}{E}{B} let go of alt and it should show a message about how legacy service books are enabled.
2) BACKUP EXISTING SERVICE BOOKS
a) Hook up the phone to the laptop
b) Open Blackberry Desktop Manager -> Backup/Restore -> Advanced
i) On the right side, scroll down to Service Books, then press the <<>
ii) Click on Save, and save them some place just in case
3) WRITE NEW SERVICE BOOKS TO DEVICE
a) First, clear your service books by scrolling down on the right side, high light Service Books, then press Clear
b) Check your device now (Options -> Advance Options -> Service Books)
i) If there is anything left besides something that mentions TCP/IP or Browser, delete those also
c) Open BB DM, go to Backup/Restore -> Advanced -> Left Window -> File -> Open -> select the service book file you downloaded.
d) Disconnect phone from Computer.
e) Go to Options -> Advanced Options -> Host Routing Table -> BB Menu key -> Register
f) go to advanced settings -> browser and change the hot spot to browser.
i) Now your browser should be enabled, along with this, you should also be able to send/receive MMS. Now would be an okay time to test this.
g) If you do not get the browser option restart and try again.
Now that you’ve done that, you should also be able to use the BB inbox for email via Shangmail. This is an application that runs in the background and pushes your email to your BB.
1.) Go to Shangmail’s website: http://en.shangmail.com I used the English version but it does go down from time to time. I have heard the Chinese version is more reliable but I do not know this from experience.
2.) From there, you should be able to register, add up to 5 pop3 email accounts, and download the app and install via Desktop Manager.
3.) Once installed, you have to open the application and log in. After that, it should start up instantly and push your email to you instantly.
Now you should have full use of your BoostBerry! Here are a few additional applications I recommend:
a. You do not have to use this for web browsing since you have the native browser working, but there are some sites that load better with Opera and it’s faster.
2.) Google Maps (You will have to download this via the BB Browser OTA. You have the option to do this when you go to google.com with your BB Browser).
a. You now have the Blackberry Maps application installed but certain functions are blocked out because you do not have BIS/BES so this program will help. There are also other GPS programs out there. I have heard good things about AmazeGPS but I haven’t personally tried it.
a. This is a third-party App for using YouMail. As of right now, you can only download YouMail via the Blackberry Store Application but you won’t be able to use that since you don’t have BIS/BES. I’ve used both and this works just as well.
a. A lot of third party pieces of software such as Opera Mini do not support the transparent menus that are utilized in the default them for the 8350. This theme is simply the default theme but with the fix so you don’t have to worry about that anymore.
Now, if you still have the urge to forward your text messages to your email, here is the how-to on that. This is a little more updated than the other one.
1) Go to Sprint.com and where you can sign in, click on “Sign Up.”
2) The rest should be pretty straight forward, just fill out the form. Once you get logged it, it might say “Cannot access your account at this time.” Don’t worry about that, just move on.
4) You will see a red bar that says “Your messages cannot be read. Please try again later.” Do not worry about that, this is made for Sprint customers so you will never be able to read your messages on this page.
5) Click on Preferences, then Forward Messages.
6) At this point, you can choose a place to forward your messages too. This can be any email address, but the most popular is a gmail or msn account b/c you can download the app for the respective email accounts and they poll often enough. Since I downloaded shangmail, I have push email so I just used my favorite email account. I also tested sending it to yournumber@page.nextel.com. This comes in as an SMS message which is instant (sometimes shangmail can take up to 15 minutes). However, it does not show who the message is from. If you get it as an email, it will tell you it’s from “your friends number/TYPE=PLMN@myboostmobile.com” If you want to reply, you will have to send a message to “your friends number@their service provider.com.” It’s a pain, but it’s better than nothing. Anyway, type in your email address and click “add.” If you want to test different ones to see which comes in faster or how they come in, you can add more than one address.
7) Be sure to check the boxes that say “Enable Forwarding Address” and “Keep a Copy in my Inbox until it expires” and then click “Okay” to save everything.

The 534 software would never let me install the browser, java or MMS apps on my 7100i. I suspect because it's written for 7520 phone.
Once I installed the 7100i software, I got the options to install and it seems to work fine.
I have found that when I use this method the BB browser does not work anymore and I cannot do OTA installs. Anyone else having this problem?
Also, I am now able to receive SMS, but if I have my BB turned off when someone sends me the SMS.. and then I turn my BB onlike 30 min later... I will never get the message. Is this normal?
I just switched to the pay as you go plan because I didn't want to pay another $50 if I can't get thios working. I don't know if that might be the root of the problem. But I don't think so because now I just pay per message, and I have the web option (my opera workks, just no downloads)

Can we get some clarification as to which BB models the workaround applies to? I am seeing too many users suggest that this does not work with, say, the 8350i. This info would be very helpful to those of us planning a purchase. Model by model breakdown?
amysharren have you now been able to get everything working on your 8350i?? I just bought one on eBay, and I was hoping to get it working by following your detailed instructions.
My workaround how-to works with the 8350. I personally cannot receive MMS. However, many people who have followed the same instructions have been able to get full use (email via shangmail, MMS, and the browser). I am still working on it and when I figure out the problem I will post the solution.
I got a 7100i off eBay and stuck my boost sim into it. I can make and recieve calls. I couldn't actually find a browser on there, but since this is my first berry I thought I'd figure it out.
I followed all of the steps as listed above, everything was going great. When I tried to load the service books and go to the application loader; the only option I had was to load a timeotapatcher (that's not exactly what it was called, forgive me... I'm writing this on my iPod right now).
I couldn't load the browser or the MMS.
What am I doing wrong? Please please post or email me to help!
Which guide did you use?? The PDF guide or the one posted by Yeswap or Amysharren?? My PDF guide has pictures and everything to walk you through the process step by step.
