    Speeds

I have a rooted Inspire and have gotten ~5.5mbps down and 2.2mbps up max. Getting over 3mbps isn't too hard.

Well the ones in my sig are in NY in an area without enhanced backhaul. Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Kingston, Hazleton I have seen 4+mbps consistently. In the Valley my upload maxes out over 2mbps typically with pings under 100ms. I'm not using stock anything on the Inspire. CM7 with flashed radio.

This thread is large, and covers everything from Scranton to Immix Wireless roaming problems. So I have no idea if this was already talked about... Perhaps it was. *Laughs.* -

There is STILL no 3G in Tunkhannock. The EDGE network there, which is former Dobson / CellularONE is HORRIBLY overloaded... But only one or two of the cell sites. Same old coverage gaps near the former Wal-Mart as there were in 2005..... Pretty ironic. - Going west on Route six reveals the same old Endless Mountains Wireless -> Dobson coverage. The sites are getting hammered pretty hard with the gas drilling operations and the population increase...

Meanwhile, Wyalusing to Towanda have 3G. This is because they are technically considered the New York market. The Philadelphia market extends up until the two GSM sites in Windham Township, Pa. Beyond that, it's New York. Which means that until the Philadelphia techs get up to Tunkhannock and such - no 3G. The fact that AT&T is also dependent upon Frontier for their backhaul is not a help either.

I won't hold my breath for 3G there anytime soon. Considering that the GSM network has not changed much since 2005... Except for the re-programming of the sites to AT&T specs... Which by the way, the network just plain sounded better when it was CellularONE DCS... *Laughs.*

    Cheers.

    Expansion

This thread was merged by the mods and has become a bit ridiculous in terms of topics covered. This really should have nothing to do with Immix - it's sole focus was for AT&T 3G expansions that have since already taken place.

As berger34 stated, there is still no 3G in Tunkhannock. AT&T most likely relies on Frontier for most of their backhaul, although I'm almost certain they use Level3 fiber where they can and fill in the gaps with frontier - on Level3's fiber map it's apparent at least in Dallas that their fiber terminates at an AT&T cell site. Also because the sites not served along Level3's fiber route are still regular 3G and do not have enhanced backhaul.

I should mention that Verizon has had 4G antennas on their towers in the Back Mountain for almost a year now and has yet to turn it on. I can only assume they're waiting for Frontier. I can't believe they would make upgrades a year in advance and still not turn on LTE unless they were waiting on backhaul.

Has anyone heard of any upgrades coming to the Matamoras, area? The town is right next to I84 and signal strength is between 1-3 bars, with 1 bar winning the race. We are getting decent data speeds though, around 1mbps, I know that isn't great, but with Sprint we were lucky to get 300kbps. Sprint seemed to have a much better signal though.
We just switched over to AT&T, and have the 30 days to decide, but if I could find out if they have any plans to increase service around here, it would help me to decide to stick with them.

AT&T recently updated their coverage map today. While the timestamp on their page still shows 1/20/12, you will notice many more 4G areas were lit up including Hazleton. Overall they've done a really good job at deploying HSPA+. I would assume the only two areas they will focus on next is Tunkhannock and 3G between Binghamton and Scranton.

Over the last few weeks, the EDGE network in Tunkhannock has gone from terrible to much more usable. On the other hand, during busy hour, it also can become terrible. But not as terrible. Rather than the speed test indicating 4-8kbps, you can get a full 20-30! *Laughs.* Nonetheless, it makes me think that something is being... tested. Perhaps 3G is around the corner...

The problem site is 23766. That's the one that SUCKS. They really should co-locate with Verizon Wireless on the one site much lower in elevation when they do finally deploy UMTS / HDSPA 850. It would fill in the gaps nicely.

I noticed that driving north from Dallas, HSDPA just cuts off very quickly. Driving west from Clarks Summit, you can hold onto HSDPA until the first bridge over the Tunkhannock creek. It does not return for another 30 miles, and it does not return RELIABLY for another 49... The area between 18853 and 18848 has HSDPA, but it drops in and out. Particularly humourous, is the fact that the HSDPA is not reliable a mere mile from the AT&T corporate store... I kid you not...

There are random 3G drop offs outside of Wilkes Barre, going on PA-115.
There are also a few gaps along the Pennsylvania Northeast Extension southbound before the PA-209 exit. Once you get through the Lehigh Tunnel, things are pretty rock solid.

Regarding part of the drive from Tunkhannock to Binghamton, NY... North on 29 to Montrose: That's an area that needs a major overhaul.... Who knows how the 3G network will behave, but the GSM network on that route is horrible. You literally are guaranteed to drop calls at least FOUR times despite not necessarily losing reception... I seriously laughed out loud when I drive tested it a few months ago...

I will say it once and I will say it again: AT&T inherited quite a botch-job of a market from Dobson in those areas... And Dobson inherited a botch-job market from that company that once had a store in Dallas, who was eventually fined by the FCC for failing to provide AMPS service on the 850 band: The long gone Endless Mountains Wireless...

Wayne County, PA can use some improvements too, we still have the same drop call areas and dead zones along 590, 191 & 196 since the original at&t wireless days. The only improvement I've seen in a long time is along 652 past Beach Lake towards Narrowsburg NY there is 3G coverage now but thats coming from the NY side of the river which used to be a complete dead zone..

Our Edge network has improved though from unusable to more tolerable the past couple months, a lot has to do with it being off season too I imagine.

The real test will be memorial day weekend, last summer the network was soo jammed here that most incoming calls went straight to voicemail, near impossible to make outgoing calls, text messages were 30 to 60 min delay, and data was at a dead halt.

After a few emails to them I received a call back from an at&t engineer in Atlanta who was actually quite concerned.. He said in Sept that the build out for our 3G coverage/ increased backhaul was scheduled to start in the spring of 2012 and was going cover all of Wayne & Pike county. I'm sure that the backhaul is probably the biggest problem around here, they will probably have to setup a microwave system as the local Cell One ( now owned by Verizon) did to get there EVDO running..

So hopefully we should be seeing some improvements to this conner of the state in the near future ..
