    Northeast PA 3G expansion?

Hi all. In Northeast PA it seems like AT&T has bumped the speed up a bit for the Wilkes-Barre Scranton area. I get about 900-1300kbps usually.

My problem - I'm in Dallas (in PA now) with an iPhone 3G. Dallas isn't covered with 3G yet. Only EDGE. I consistently get full service at my house and EDGE isn't horrifically slow, but for about a week my phone has been switching between EDGE and GPRS consistently and it's really annoying. Emails sometimes come in an hour late because the download barely hits 10kbps.

My phone has switched between the two upwards of 20 times in the past half hour. Is AT&T planning a 3G expansion in Northeast PA any time soon? I don't want to call tech support unless I have to.

Expect October for a launch that will cover the rest of the area (Dallas, Hazleton, etc.) but not before then.
    Only getting better:

    Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

    School. Soo slow hehe.

I called the main AT&T store in Wilkes-Barre. Rep said "it is coming" but "not sure when." I then asked, "possibly 6th months?" and she said yes. I've also heard October.

Nice. That's a little disappointing though since Verizon has had EVDO since July of 2007 up here, though it was so heavily restricted you couldn't do anything with it.

Do you have access to the MTI that may have further information?

I know. I was in Wilkes-Barre and got 1.2mb down on 3G. I flipped the phone over to EDGE and got 85kbps...so it really is night and day. I seriously hope if they do upgrade the remaining area to 3G that it is as widespread as Verizon's EVDO. I can see them skipping out on 81 to Hazleton and just covering Hazleton itself or covering the bare necessecities of the rest.

When it comes to network expansion AT&T really likes to do the absolute bare minimum to keep any resemblance of competitive edge.

What are you talking about here? The TOS? Verizon and ATT's practically mirror each other's. I stream, VoIP, etc about 7GB/mo. on my Omnia and never heard a peep from them, have been doing so for @ least 3 years. Granted, it wasn't nearly as high before EVDO, but no problems.

Back on topic, they better get 3G moving, I hop onto GPRS all the time now and when I'm on EDGE I struggle to do anything but load WAP pages. Barely use it anymore anyway, but I'm gonna drop ATT if it's not here by October.

I should've clarified more. Most of the normal Verizon Wireless phones are heavily locked down and you can't really use EVDO without paying for everything you want to be able to use it (Ringtones, Mobile Web, VCAST, Apps, etc).

Any updates on this? I'm really hoping for some 3G action to come our way in Hazleton!

The latest I heard was this may have been delayed even further, almost all due to lack of commitment of $ from AT&T. It's really disappointing to see AT&T ignoring this area the way they are. When GSM was just coming together, Scranton/W-B was one of the original markets to come online under the former AT&T Wireless. They always seemed to treat this market very well. Almost everyone I knew had AT&T and was happy with them as they were constantly expanding. Now, and seemingly shortly after becoming Cingular, they are doing almost no work whatsoever on GSM and haven't done any 3G expansion in 2 years, 9 months. They turned on SOME 850 3G months back, excuse me while I yaaawwwnnn. The only people left on AT&T are those who are iPhone fanatics, friends who must have unlocked cells, are still stuck in a 2 year, or who depend on M2M calling for family who are throughout the US. Most other users have long switched to Verizon and have zero reason to leave. Verizon has coverage almost everywhere in our area, even in the most rural parts AND 3G in 100% of the area they serve. I wish I could say AT&T was the same. Hell, T-freaking-Mobile just launched a 3G footprint that matches AT&T's and plans on aggressively expanding through the rest of the year. This is only the third, maybe, market in PA to receive 3G from T-Mobile? Just going by the coverage maps, it's Philly, surrounding areas, and S/W-B. No Pitt, Harrisburg, State College yet we have it. If this market was not at all data-savvy and only 25% of users were using data products I'd say of course hold off on expansion. But when you walk around and see 65%-70% of AT&T users with a smartphone (and 99% of AT&T users I know personally) there is no excuse. My prediction is October will come and go with no new 3G coverage, but for your and others benefit, I certainly hope to be wrong.

It honestly is pretty pathetic. I had Verizon in the past and refuse to go back to them, but the lack of 3G with AT&T is making me reconsider keeping my iPhone. I'd switch to T-Mobile, but too many people have my phone number and they aren't able to port it over (that's what they say online). Verizon has had 3G since summer of 2007 here, and it's been officially over 2 years and AT&T has not a bit of it in Hazleton or the Back Mountain. Now that school is back in session the EDGE tower covering the campus gets overloaded in the morning and around 3pm, it's impossible to load web pages...and considering 90% of the school has Verizon that doesn't say much about AT&T's network capabilities.

In 2007 AT&T put up a tower literally right outside their 3G coverage area in Plymouth on the mountain. In fact, my phone frequently flips to EDGE when I should be in a 3G area because they never bothered to even activate 3G on it...I honestly think a 3G signal overlaps the tower itself...but no..leave it to AT&T to put up a new tower with no 3G service on a busy highway.

Is there a way to tell if a tower is theoretically ready to serve 3G just by looking at it based on the antennas?

AT&T finally put a 3G tower up in my area. I live in Indiana, PA and its pretty rural around here, its pretty much all farm land out here. Anyway, Indiana is a small college town (anyone heard of IUP?) They put it up on August 1st of this year, it surprised me, and since everyone has Verizon the AT&T towers are very fast, they may even be faster then Verizon :O. But to get back on topic, it seems that they are expanding their 3G service in Pennsylvania now. And T-Mobile is just being lazy, they can port your number, they probably think your crazy to switch from AT&T to T-Mobile though......
