I have the same problem as mini_telus.

I can connect to a COM, but if QCDM connects, it has a few failed spots, and I can't get the password to send.

    mini_telus and Ithillien:

I've had this problem too, and I even got everything to work the first time. I found that if you turn the phone off and then back on again, and then try reconnecting to cdma workshop, sometimes that helps.

I believe I have found a way. Doing some testing right now to see if it's fully functional. Funny thing though as I have stumbled upon this. Also this doesn't require bitpim or CDMA. You just need an e-mail address, your phone number, an upload service, a file converter, your brain, hot pockets, and your m540 'Rant' phone.

Oh yea this isn't that .3g2 crapizzle. I'm talking genuine use for anything ringtone.

@ mini_telus : Yes, I live in Montreal. I speak both French & English, but my main language is English. I'm not good enough to completely translate all the Tutorial into French, sorry.

Concerning your problem; if you did it correctly, and the Files are on your phone in the correct place, you should be able to locate them this way:

Main Menu ---> My Files ---> Ringtones

In there you will see all the Ringtones. To apply them, press the Right Soft Key button for "Options", then "Set As...".

The only thing I can recommend is maybe you should buy one from Koodo / Telus and use that as a template. That's what I did the 1st time, then after that it all worked and was really easy.

@ mini_telus : I sometimes have one area "Failed" in CDMA Workshop, but the Password can still be sent for mine. Make sure you are using the correct COM. If the Driver is installed correctly and updated, then there should be 2 COMs.

Try going HERE for the Driver.

    Sprint Users!

So here was I was trying to do.
Earlier today I found a site where you can download ring tones legitimately to your phone and use them for whatever (sent myself a txt from my email to download the link, faster imo. Use xxxxxxxxxx@messaging.sprintpcs.com and change link to hyperlink).
Now you'll quickly see that these are quite limited, even though I found some on there that I'm using now.
So I figured it would definitely be a good idea to try and mimic this website by uploading files of my own with some upload service.
Now to test this I downloaded the .gc and the .m4a file from the website above. I used mediafire.com to upload the .m4a first. Then copied the link location of the file and pasted that in the .gc file, which I then saved and uploaded. I then copied the link location of the .gc file sent it to me via email, opened the txt, opened the link, and BLAMO it worked!

Except not fully. I got to the download page where it showed the progress bar, the phone then continued to do nothing and exited itself back to the main screen.

Basically since I have no idea where the crap the 'index' file is I thought this would be a good work around. I just have yet to find a compatible site. I believe this would work for those with any carrier and you wouldn't have to do any unlocking or mess around with bitpim.

So there's a sampling of my genius for all you to eat off of and help out. I believe there's a website that'll work out there considering that it worked of the sample website. Also I was able to download Tetris and Chess using the same technique.

Suggestions or help from those who know of upload sites that provide direct links to files (i.e. http://wap.txnj.net/games/Tetris.jad) would be much appreciated. I'm almost to the end of the road! Woohoo and it was an accident!

@ Partof30 : This meathod *should* work for Telus users, but it will not work for Koodo users. I don't know about the others that carry the Samsung m540.

    partof30:

I think I might have a workarround to download ringtone into the M540 for sprint users. It is not totally free. It requires Internet connection (I believe we do not need to subscriber to data plan). The Internet usage is about 10kb per ringtone; i.e. total of 30 cent for each ringtone (or any download). No need for SMS.

The idea is summarized as follow:
    1. Instruct the AMS to create the ringtone (or media) indexing in the protected ACE.dat To do this, create an empty text file; for example template.txt. Rename this template.txt to template.m4a. This template file size determines the number of kbytes used during Internet connections (therefore you want to create it as small as possible).
    2. Upload this template file using rumkins (http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/). Use the jumpcode method, since this method does not require SMS. In the description, you can put any name ypu want. This description will be the one displayed on your phone in the mystuff folder. I use a generic name, since I do not know the ringtone name that I would like to pu in the phone. Remember, in this step we are creating the ringtone container. After you click upload, rumkin will provide you with the jumpcode. Note down this jumpcode since the jumpcode will be used to retrieve your .gc and .gcd template files.

The next step is to download that template file from rumkins.
    3. Turn off and lock your data connections (or vision plan). This is to avoid the phone to connect to the sprint homepage and therefore incurring unnecasry charges on your Internet data usage.
    4. Modify the phone's browser homepage to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/jump.php
    5. With the data connection is off. Make sure your browser homepage is accessing the http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/jump.php.
    6. Clears browser history and recent pages, cookies. Once again to avoid unnecessary internet usage.
    6. Turn on and unlock your internet connection
    7. Go to your homepage which is http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/jump.php. The response will be a page for entering the jumpcode.
    8. Enter the jumpcode and select go.
    9. Your template file is downloaded into the phone and AMS successfully indexes this container in the ACE.dat.
    10. If you want to create multiple containers, you can hit back in the browser to the screen where you enter your jumpcode. Do not back all the way to your homepage, I think ypu can save some Internet usage also.
    11. Repeat step 1 and 2 and obtain your jumpcode for your next ringtone container.
    12. Repeat step 8.
    13. Do not forget to turn off internet and lock the internet.

Once you are done with your container, you can open the mystuff folder to verify that your container is created under the ringer folder.

The next step is to put a desired content into your ringtone container.
    14. You do not need a .gcd file at this moment. All you need is a .gc file. However, I still created the correct .gcd file. The reason is the .gcd file is the pointer where the content is obtained. I think, if the ACE.dat is deleted, AMS will rebuild the ACE.dat using the .gcd files.

The following step requires use of bitpim with unlock phone. I use cdma workshop to unlock my phone. There are various discussion to unlock the phone,

    15. Obtain the .gcd file from your ringtone container.
    16. Modify the .gcd file. This is the .gcd file obtained from my ringtone container. In this case, my container is Ringtone-01. This is the modified .gcd file which describes my desired ringtone:

    Content-Type: audio/mp4
    Content-Name: Ringtone-01
    Content-Version: 1.0
    Content-Vendor: template
    Content-URL: file://mmc1/AMSDL/CONTENT/Custom783/Custom783.gc
    Content-Size: 251995
    Content-Folder: Ringers

    Some Notes:
    * Content-url. I have not tested this .gcd file will work and I am not sure whether AMS can access the content url in the mmc1 directory.
    * Content-size. Make sure you use the correct file size for the content.
    * If you want, you can add Content-description: ....enter the content description.

    17. Navigate to mystuff folder and ringers folder and you can see all your ringtone containers.
    18. Highlight your container ringtone, click options and select listen. You should be able to listen to your ringtone.

How much does it cost you for using sprint internet?
    1. HTTP request to access rumkin download page: I am not sure. I think it is failry small, since it is text based. Assume 1Kbyte.
    2. HTTP response: I am not sure. It is failry small, since it is text based. Assume 1Kbyte.
    3. HTTP request for sending the jumpcode to web server. I am not sure. It is failry small, since it is text based. Assume 1Kbyte.
    4. Downloading your .gc and .gcd. The .gc is 1kbyte. Assume the .gcd is also 1kbte. Total file download are 2kbytes.
    5. Total transaction kbyte: 5 kbyte
    6. IP, TCP, and HTTP header could double the bandwidth usage to 10kbytes.
    7. Your total cost of using sprint internet is 10kbytes x 0.03 = 0.30. It is under a dollar. For 10 ringtones container, your cost is 3 dollar.
    8. I imagine, in my case, I might only need 10 to 20 ringtone containers. I can replace this ringtone as many time I as I want.

I think, this method could also be used to install other content. I am trying to find a workarround for screensavers and games. If you folks out there knows where to get free games and screensavers, especially animated screensavers, I will test this method for installing these contents.

I tried shutting off the phone and turning it on again. Now I only have one COM that I can connect to, and QCDM won't start at all.

    This is so frustrating XD
