Heck no, the smartphone market is not wrapped around straight out touchscreen IMO. Most people I know who are heavy smartphone users DO NOT want to use full touchscreen as they are a complete pain in the butt.

Such as Blackberry. Blackberry tried a full touchscreen and it was ultimately a failure. Physical keys are definitely the way to go IMO. Full touchscreens are pretty and fit nicely in your pocket, but they're really inefficient. Heavy texters - aka teenies - know this, and you almost never see them with a full touchscreen that isn't the Apple phone.

I agree. Especially business users who want speed and minimal errors; we want to feel the buttons and not look back too much. This is why the Krave was such a failure, plus the average adult fingertip could cover up to 9 buttons so the touch screen on that thing is so error prone.

Makes alot of sense, actually. I love the Krave except when its time to compose a message, new firmware and all, its still a pain.

I'm in favor of touch screens. I love the freedom of touching the interface as opposed to using a directional pad. QWERTY keyboard is another issue. I have gotten used to the Kraves keys but I think the size of the screen plays a HUGE role in the keyboard. I do get typo's with the Krave but I've adapted to it's style so it's not so much any more. I like the slide down style of a keyboard because you get more screen space which make touching it easier.

It might be because my Dad has always had a palm for work since like the late 1990 that I'm more in favor of them and just used to them. Also I've always had since I was 5 an urge to play around with the computers shown on Star Trek. And this is the closet I'll get to it. lol

You are summing up why this phone has the potential to be an iPhone killer. It has both virtual touch and real QWERTY with a screen much larger than iPhone, removable battery and only 2mm thicker than the ancient Q9c.

Come on Motorola, you can do it. I heard they are into production right now but will not activate yet and I am sure they aren't done with the firmware or Android 2.0 Eclair yet..

^^^Well put,and we need something out that can smash the iPhone. I'm so sick of iPhone talk already. With that said lets get the move on Moto.

Firmware is for sure not done yet that I know for a fact per another contact I have. It does have Eclair already tho from what I was told. Word I received is the Sholes will be the first device released to the public to even have Eclair ( ie Android 2.0).

I think it will be very hard to kill the iPhone with its huge app store. Snapdragon, 1 gig of ram, 10 mp camera, not even a keyboard is going to do it. The iPhone has been slacking since it came out but still a top seller, why? Mainly due to marketing and the app store. Now a days others can compete with the OS with Android and WebOS.

I don't think the iPhone is that great, I have a iPod touch for the apps and I like the browser. So thats 2 things, not enough for me to get one even if it does go to Verizon unless they do some major upgrading. I definitely will be getting this phone but don't expect an iPhone killer anytime soon.

^^^^And that would be the only reason other companies will still have trouble with killing the iPhone. To date there has yet to be a big market player to compete with the iPhone hardware wise IMO. However as soon as there is a device itself that can compete it will not take long for other carriers to have numerous apps start rolling out. And with that said the folks designing apps will not put all there efforts toward iPhone stuff still as there will be other places to make money. Currently most efforts go towards the iPhone because there is no other player to compete with them. The G1 was never going to do that just do to the fact T-Mobile has it and the customer base is not big enough. So in the case of the Sholes with VZW and then it going to other carriers in 2010 there will be a player if the device is what we are all hoping it will be. Only time will tell tho.

And I'm with ya tho in the idea the iPhone is not that great of a device, besides the touchscreen itself. And the network it is on doesn't help it either. One thing I always found funny when it first came out is how you have a device like this that does not even send MMS like any other normal phone does. I mean come on already. But your right it would need some major improvement for me to even consider getting one some day if it went to VZW or another carrier.

A QWERTY hardware keyboard is very good if they really are going to market this phone as a gaming beast. Touch screen based controls have never won the masses over.

Well, you gotta admit the User Experience of Apple is hard to beat. Their UI was just so ahead of anything. The entertainment value in the photo and music albums, sliding animated interface, etc., it all came out when Verizon was at the height of crippling everything with their standard red UI. OK I will stop there and not make this a UI rant.

But getting back to companies will still have trouble with killing the iPhone...

Where would you rather spend your time - 3 minutes or so before service at an Apple store, or 40 minutes waiting in a Verizon store before you get a welcome?

I actually find this quite true. No matter how busy the store is, if you reserve online with Concierge, you get support in that time. It's so fast, it's unbelievable.

Wouldn't life be so much better if VZW was a GSM carrier? I once had a dream... where ever carrier in the world was using a global standard. Then I woke up.

The only time I've had a long wait in a vzw store was when I was waiting for someone to service me. Like you know there are x amount of people ahead of me with problems. Anytime I've gone to a corp store or kiosk there was always was someone there to great me. But I'm sure that's not the same everywhere.

Though TBH I've never had that problem before with cell phone companies greeting people (WELL maybe alltel). Hell whenever I went into AT&T to get a micro USB adapters someone is there to say hi and they even go out and get it for me. Even though it's just a few steps from where I was.

The only apple store by me is some picnic table in Best Buy and whoever is there is too busy playing with their iPhone or talking with the other BB employees to come over. They do but they are not in a hurry But I have heard of Apple's extraordinary CS. I've just never had an apple product to bother trying it out.

I'm not cool enough to be an Apple person.
