Verizon's world (Vodaphone) SIM cards don't work here, that's for sure. They will get voice almost anywhere out of the country, but not data as advertised.

Wow. I have just gone thru reading all posts over the past 2 days. I was looking for the sholes stuff over in the pda/aircards section...

Too many of you think vzw is going to cripple the phone. VZW hasn't done this for the past year. Storm/Tour/TP2 etc. all have GPS unlocked, as much memory available, the new TP2 has the 3.5mm headset jack, etc.

I think vzw WANTS to sign new clients and keep their clients. They have NEVER pre released real info on phones/release dates, etc. Most of this forum exists b ecause we get some tidbits and start speculating with other bleeding edge adopters. For 9 months we speculate about the TP2, release date etc., then bang, a week before it gets released we find out that its in the system, and there it is! What vzw doesn't care about if you say you are gonna leave just because your ne2 is up tomorrow and you haven't heard if the sholes is coming the next day!

I think vzw will have a great offering with Android. A year from now there will be a whole slew of android phones. This will be great as it will spur both BB and WM to make even better SW and HW. Does vzw care if they release the sholes oct 6, or nov 6. Probably not. Do they care if they release it by black friday. Probably yes. But truthfully, the earlier they release it, the quicker the make money. It is like that will all high tech products. You don't hold something, it has limited shelf life to begin with.

    VZW is no dummy.

PS. I really want to see one of these as much, since my current choices are tp2, tour, storm2 or sholes.

I'm more concerned that they're going to cripple access to the android market. The market is the only reason I play with my brother's T-Mo phone. Besides, I was waiting on the Choco Touch and now I don't want it - so waiting to be a S-Hole user doesn't matter to me anymore

If it gets released as a "Google Experience device" they can't cripple it do to the terms. And word floating around is it will be a Google Experience device when released.

Here is Googles def. and fyi there are 2 other forms of Android carriers & mfgs can use which I'll post below

The Google Experience: Phones featuring the Google logo with all Google apps installed and includes unrestricted access (neither the carrier nor handset maker can block applications they find objectionable) to the Android market. 5 or 6 of the 20, Android phones mentioned by Rubin will deliver the full Google Experience as god and Sergey designed it.

    # Google-free: Free to download version of Android without Google applications like Gmail or Google Calendar. Access to Android applications is at the whimsical fancy of the manufacturer.
    # Strings attached: Same as above but manufacturers sign a distribution agreement with Google and pre-install the Google applications. Of Rubin's possible 20 phones, 12 to 14 fall into this category

Yikes. If it's Google-Free, and not a Google Experience device, then I'm not sure I even want it. That would probably push me over to a Blackberry, like the Storm 2.

Edit: But if it's a Google Experience device, I plan to try and get one the same day they arrive in Stores.

Why make judgement if you don't know the fact. Even if it isn't Experience who's to say it will be locked down or not have what you are looking for.

IMHO people need to stop making assumptions and just wait for the given facts at this point. It is not that far out before we should know the facts on it. however to pass and go to the Storm2 is craziness IMO. For one they at least better fix what they messed up on the first go because the original Storm was garbage. Then again I'm no fan of BB in general tho as I think there devices and UI are for junk. And web browsing for one is terrible on a BB IMO, they needed to update there browser ages ago and are still behind the 8 ball. Just my .02 tho.

I've been using the original enV phone for over 2 years, using the original ringtones, because Verizon blocks my ability to use my own ring tones without having to use cumbersome workarounds. I will NOT pay Verizon for a ring tone, nor will I buy another phone that's as neutered as this one. My current phone has Blue tooth, but it only works for use with s hands free headset.

No thanks. Open it up, or prepare to see sales suffer. I am confident that I am not the only 'casual consumer' who feels that way.

Getting ringtones on an LG is cake. Data cable, drivers and BitPim and you should be good to go.

I do agree to a point but I disagree sales will suffer tho as to many american are just lazy and continue to buy from the carrier. I've shown numerous friend how and what needs to be done and what is there reply. Oh that is to much work I'll just pay for it to make life easy which IMO is pretty sad that is the way so many consumers feel this day and age. But speaking for myself I don't mind messing around with phones to get what I want. And to date with there lock downs I've yet to not be able to do what I want without paying them for it.

I'm sure you're right about the ring tone procedures, but I shouldn't HAVE to go through the hassles of a data cable, drivers and BitPim for a ring tone. It's true that I am a lazy American, but I'm also suffering from the same awful economy that everyone else is. I might pay more per month for the data plan I'll need, but I WON'T pay to 'rent' applications from Verizon. Nor will I buy music or media from Verizon.

I admit that the info required to work around Verizon's lock-down policies is available, but I just don't have the time. I expect my cell phone to make my life EASIER, not to add things to my daily 'to-do' list.
I'll just jump to another carrier if Verizon neuters this device.

I'm not singling you out, but this is getting a little old. I realize that this is the type of phone that will bring a lot of smartphone converts, but this is getting ridiculous. Would it kill you guys to do a little reading about Verizon smartphones before making comments like this?

Verizon does not neuter smartphones. The last thing that was neutered on Verizon smartphones is GPS, and all of the smartphones being released these days has unlocked GPS. You can put whatever ringtone, or whatever other piece of software, you want on your Verizon smartphone. They don't lock you out.

Great. That's good news. And no, I didn't know that. Probably because I'm still using a horribly crippled VZ Dumbphone.

Indeed. Smartphones are a different animal on VZW. Look at it this way, look how hard they push BB's on you? This is catered to the 30-40 yeard old business types. Most people in this bracket are somewhat tech saavy and what their phones unmolested. Somewhere along the lines, VZW realized this too. Dumbphones are a complete different animal as VZW essentially thinks that you as the consumer are just that, dumb. (and in a lot of cases they would be completely correct in that assumption).

I am still hoping this phone delivers, we'll know in a few weeks here. If it fails, I'll wait for LTE phones next year. (I live in LA area, so LTE rolled out here in the first wave)

If you plan on waiting for an LTE phone I'd hunker down for a long wait. I wouldn't expect any to drop next year. Aircards are going to rule LTE for quite awhile.
