The only thing that is holding from getting this phone is that I need to know if they put the d-pad on the left side instead of leaving it on the right side. Now I know pics of the keyboard can't be shown but can the d-pad position at least be known without pics. It is killing me to know.![]()

+1. My SNES/NES/GBA emulation is going to be soooo awesome on this phone with a proper Dpad, keyboard, fast processor.... I can't wait to have this awesome device in my pants at all times. The sad thing is, I'll probably get a Tegra device when it comes out too... :POriginally Posted by jquest97
Also, preventing root access prevents custom roms, which despite this forum's belief that Verizon is nicer, is still not within Verizon's nature, as well as the more advanced tethering apps, etc.
My predicition is that they removed the d-pad and put in an optical trackpad. IMO they are much better than the d-pads and I think I would still prefer it on the right side of the keyboard.
so if the firmware is blocking custom roms... how long will it take from a firmwareupdate....leak...that someone can change to allow flashing..
where there is a will there is a way. It will happen no matter what. It is just a matter of time...
I don't know about optical track pads vs d-pads but unless you are a lefty either of them being on the right side would not be good for right handed people playing emulators like me.Originally Posted by sadmedic

Moto Razr
There's no ways to guess this type of thing until the hardware is in the hands of those types of people. Could be a week, could be a year. It'll be interesting to see regardless. I'll probably wait to pick up the Tao (hope that's the name) until I know one way or the other.Originally Posted by cuzzinz
I'd love to see the d-pad on the left for emulators, but I don't think a change THIS RADICAL is possible at this point...
It'll be a polished version of all the renders we're seeing...
That's not how it works. A vulnerability will have to be found that allows for root access in the earliest image available for the phone, or else someone has to leak a *signed* version of some special update that allows root or has some exploit (hint, this ISN'T going to happen).Originally Posted by cuzzinz
So cross your finger that Google/Motorola misses something in the initial version and that a full image (aka DREAIMG.nbh) gets leaked. If both of those things don't happen, and Verizon/Motorola has signature checks in place (you'd better believe it)... then there quite literally are no other options.
The renders showing the D-pad are ancient. It could have easily changed more recently. The recent renders haven't shown the D-pad....Originally Posted by The_Knight
God I hope you are right as this would be a deal breaker for me if the D-pad is not on the left side.Originally Posted by nobnoobody
Whoa whoa there. I have absolutely no idea if it is changed. I have no fancy insider tips or phones or friends that even know what "Android" means... All I'm saying is that the 2-3 month old renders definitely don't mean that it couldn't have changed....Originally Posted by jquest97

I have been following this thread for a while (I read a LOT more than I post) and I would like to say thank you to all who have graciously provided some great information, insight and pictures of this new phone as they are able too.

I'm interested in this phone although I will say the Omnia2 and Storm2 also have some of my attention. Looks like in +/- 8 weeks I should have a nice trio of handsets to decide between.
The one aspect of the Tao/Sholes that I haven't seen a lot of discussion on in this pre release thread is signal strength and call quality of the phone. I don't own a smartphone yet so 80%+ of what I do with a phone is talk on it. One reason I've been so loyal to Motorola over the years is that with the Moto phones I've had the signal strength and call voice quality have been incredibly good. If anyone with a test handset could comment that would be appreciated, if not I'm sure some early adopters will comment when the phone is released.
