Yeah, I can remember when Motorola phones were a premium and all LG made were the carrier branded phones (i.e. my old Bell Atlantic Mobile 330D). If you've only had a phone for 2-3 years, Moto hasn't really done anything to warrant special attention (on Verizon anyways). The RAZR2 was nice, but they never lowered the price on it enough to consider it over other comparable phones.
The funny thing is that they still sell the original RAZR to prepaid carriers, but the axed the RAZR2 altogether. You'd think they would axe the RAZR instead f the RAZR2 instead.

At this point, it's got to cost them next to nothing to make the RAZR. The margins are probably off the charts on that thing.
The RAZR two never reached the critical mass that the RAZR reached. As such, it costs them more to produce the phone.
Throw in the fact that the original RAZR is one of the biggest rock star phones ever produced, and there's not much reason to stop selling the thing. I'll bet they're still making more money on that phone than anything else they produce.

But, unless Moto does a much better job of SW quality at launch than they did with the Krave, it will crater so fast you'll wonder where it went.

Exactly which is why IMO neither Moto Android phone will be out when they wanted them to be. They can not afford anymore bad press right now so they better have it right before it gets released.

Then they should not release it to Verizon who will no doubt mangle there UI.
Beyond that, it has an open source OS. This represents a huge change for both Motorola and VZW and it will be very interesting to see how all that is handled at the OS level and what security protocols are implemented.
After doing a bit of introductory reading about the Android SDK it seems to present a lot of possibilities but it's really an open question as to what level of access can be achieved and what software tools and techniques may be required.
This is a tectonic shift for hacker types like me...and a very steep learning curve I'm sure!

If you don't have any Linux programming experience, now would be as good a time as any to read up.
Yup...Linux looms large in the future for all phone modding it seems and I'm not quite completely ignorant about it...but close!
This will be an interesting transition for many reasons. It will be the first of it's kind as well as being among the last generation of CDMA devices given the move to LTE that will entirely change the landscape and dramatically affect the balance of power between VZW and Qualcomm and the manufacturers.

Gee, I'm not mch of a techinical person, but I'm intrested in fiddling with Android! Dioes anyone know is Motorola is going to dress up the Android UI like how HTC and Sony Ericsson did?

From what i heard, it's going to have the same UI as the HTC hero and have Java to play games and view flash videos over the net.
