you can always change the plan up or down without effecting your contract. the contract period just saying you have to be a customer for this many days.

How would go about this step if I get a 3GS phone at an Apple store on Friday.
I currently have the iPhone Edge version on the Family talk 700 plan. I want to downgrade to the Family 550 plan. I don't need the minutes and the 3G data plan is $10 bucks more. By purchasing the phone at Apple will it auto renew me on the 700 plan? Could I change to the 550 plan now on the ATT web site or does that mess me up getting the 3GS for $199?

Your best bet is to complete the upgrade to the iPhone 3G S on Friday and then make the rate plan change online via OLAM. There is no impact to making the change after you start the new contract.Originally Posted by gquiring
NOTE: You will lose any Rollover minutes that are above 550, you get to carry over only the max for the new rate plan. Also the FamilyTalk 550 is limted to a max of 3 lines of service. Your current FamilyTalk 700 allows up to 5 lines of service.

Be advised that the plan for the first generation iPhone gave you 200 text messages. The Data Plan for the iPhone 3g and 3G S covers data only. You have to purchase a messaging plan separately.Originally Posted by gquiring

I know I am going to need to add $5 for 200 messages. I already added into my budget the extra $15 a month minus the $10 for savings on the 550 plan. I changed things up a bit though and saved more. My 2nd phone is rarely used (5 minutes a month). I went to Target today and got a Tracphone. I am going to cancel the family plan and get the $40 single plan. I will call ATT tomorrow and just confirm I can switch and not loose the $199 deal on the 3GS.
remember not all market have the family talk 550 min.
