    Getting a BB 8820

I'm buying a Like new BB 8820 tomorrow from a seller on craigslist and I want to know some info before paying the money.

This would be my first BB and I have never used anything that can get emails before. So bear with me if these are stupid questions.

I just want to use my BB to get emails from different accounts and at the same time doing instant messaging and texting. I'm now using a regular Tmobile family plan without any add ons. So my question would be what is the cheapest plan i can get to do things that i've listed above?

I've heard about not letting Tmobile know that I'm using a BB, so that they won't force me to get their data plan, but if i don't use their data plan, do I have any other options?

If i can get emails, does that mean that i can do web browsing too?

    Thanks in advance!!

You will not be able to get email without getting a Blackberry data plan (Blackberry Internet Service or BIS). BIS also includes internet access and currently is $24.99. This plan does not include any texts so if you do a lot of texting, you will also need to add a text plan.

You also need to be sure that the PIN is clear or you will not be able to register it on your account, in which case you'll have a phone/PIM but no email or other BB services.

Thanks for the reply. What PIN are you referring to?

Every blackberry has a unique pin that registers it to the network for BIS/BES as well as blackberry messenger.

I recommend you spend some time learning a bit more about Blackberries before you buy one from Craiglist (or anywhere else). Otherwise, you may end up being very disappointed and wasting money on a device which will not give you what you are looking for.

A blackberry is not simply a phone. If you only want to use it as simply a phone, you are fine buying it without knowing what you are getting into. However, if you ever have any intention of actually using it as a blackberry (for example, the BB email) and taking advantage of what makes it different from plain phones, then you need to be educated. Knowing what a PIN is, is only a first step.

How is the trackball? That's one reason I will only buy my BBs from T-Mo. The trackball tends to get crap stuck in it and being able to call T-Mo and have a new/refurb BB sent to me is priceless.

My trackball got stuck regularly and still does on my 8820 and 8830. The trackball on the 8820 failed entirely a couple months ago, but I had insurance and the extended warranty, so T-Mobile replaced the entire device for free.

Surprising, the BB that i got today is in Brand new condition. Other than it doesn't have the box, everything else is in prefect condition. I tried on the trackball, it's smooth and all good. Hope it could stay that way for a while.

I have a question after reading the page for BB beginner.

One of the questions being asked was

" Q: How do I configure my BlackBerry?
A: You will have to change its APN, just like you do for any cellphone.
    Options -> Advanced -> TCP -> APN
    Change to "internet.com" and Save.

What does this configuration do? Why would we need to configure our BB?

Normally, after you add the blackberry plan (BIS) to your account, the service books will be transmitter with all the info needed for the phone to work properly on your carrier and with the RIM servers.

So if I have on a data plan but not a BIS plan, I don't have to configure my BB?

Hi there ... I'm having difficulties installing/downloading opera mini to my BB.

So i followed the the instruction to first download the OS to my PC and got to

    http://www.opera.com/mini/download/b...ackberry_8820/

to download the OS to my pc. The zip file is now on my pc desktop but when i try to add the application to my BB I get an error message saying "No additional applications designed for your device found!". I have extracted the files to a folder and tried to choose those 2 files to install the OS. But the problem is that when i open the folder using desktop manager, the folder where i exctraced the files to only shows one file instead of 2. But if i open the folder on my pc desktop, i see 2 files. So i tried to drag it to the desktop manager, but it says 'cannot move the file. The source and destination file names are the same. So what can i do now?

My data plan will kick in at 12 midnight, and i'm only getting a regular data plan, not BIS. I was hoping that I can install everything now and use it when the data plan comes into effect. Please help!

Just so you realize that somethings will not work with a regular data plan, such as getting the emails from different accounts that you mentioned in your first post.

Finally .. after a week of researching, I've got the regular data plan working on my BB 8820. But i have a problem, i'm using logicmail on my BB and able to receive emails on my msn mail but i can't send out any email. What is the problem? I've tried port 995 with pop3.live.com and port 25 with smtp.live.com, i've also tried 587 for outgoing server but still can't get it work. But for my gmail, there's no problem receiving or sending out emails. Can anyone help?
