Thinking of Switching from Verizon to PP - Questions, Questions

Hi there. I've spent a lot of hours lurking on this forum over the past few days. My eyes are practically crossed since I've been reading so much here! But, I need a little help - I've looked through the threads in this forum and tried to figure out some stuff myself, but I may have missed something. In short, please don't crucify me if I did!

My Verizon phone was stolen last week. It was a piece of crap anyway, so I wasn't too heartbroken about it. My contract is up next month, so it definitely could have been worse timing.

Since then, I've thought of going to Cricket. Then, I decided to do some research - looked at Boost (but, didn't like the iDEN, and the CDMA stuff seems like a hassle) and now I'm looking at PP. PP is especially intriguing considering the rumors about the new changes on August 6th.

    Onto the questions:

So, first of all - does PP seem like the best route to go? I want to be able to talk, text, and I've never used the web on my old phone, so I'm not sure how much I would actually use. However, I do like the idea of it, but I am uncertain about how much usage 20 MB translates to.

Second, I see that many people are using a Moto Q9c on the PP network without issue. Do I have to purchase a PP phone before switching to the Moto Q9c? (This is why the Boost CDMA was kinda unattractive to me, but if I have to, I'll do it)

Plus, Boost seems to give people some crap for changing out to a non-Boost phone. PP seems more lenient. Is this an accurate assessment?

I've seen the instructions on how to switch the phones - but it is really feasible for someone who is pretty much wireless illiterate? Could a novice actually fix this phone up to work, or should I probably let a professional handle it?

Do you folks have faith that this new PP plan is really coming true?

OK, last question, if I do get a Moto Q9c that has been flashed to Cricket, will I be able to use it on PP?

I should note that I have no problems switching telephone numbers. I don't care about porting my number, etc., etc.

Thanks in advance for all of your help. You guys seem pretty helpful around here, so I really hope I'm not bugging y'all. I'm grateful for any advice I can get!

Page Plus will be a great option! When it comes to just Talk and Text, Page Plus is excellent. Now, the web is an extra freebie for you. You said you never used it on your old phone, so you're not someone that 'needs' a lot of data. 20 MB should be fine unless you plan on doing some downloading and/or streaming. For basic web and email you'll be fine with just the 20 MB.

Second, I see that many people are using a Moto Q9c on the PP network without issue. Do I have to purchase a PP phone before switching to the Moto Q9c? (This is why the Boost CDMA was kinda unattractive to me, but if I have to, I'll do it)

Just about any Verizon Wireless phone will work fine. I'm not positive about the web though. Page Plus says you need an 'authorized' phone, but I don't think that is always necessary. I used picture messaging on a phone that wasn't 'authorized'. Simply call Page Plus and ask them to enable to feature. I don't think you'll have any problems on Page Plus' end. If there are any problems it will be with the phone itself. It will probably be easy to fix, especially if many people in the forum have the phone. Page Plus isn't weird like Boost. You can use any Verizon phone and Page Plus will activate the ESN even if it isn't a Verizon phone.

I've seen the instructions on how to switch the phones - but it is really feasible for someone who is pretty much wireless illiterate? Could a novice actually fix this phone up to work, or should I probably let a professional handle it?

Which phone are you planning on using? If it is Verizon, Talk and Text will work perfectly fine. You might have some trouble with other features such as picture messaging, video messaging, and web, but there are many in the forums that are willing to help. Depending on trust, someone may be willing to take the phone from you to set it up.

Do you folks have faith that this new PP plan is really coming true?

The unlimited plan? It will be coming out.

OK, last question, if I do get a Moto Q9c that has been flashed to Cricket, will I be able to use it on PP?

Yeah, sure. Read the thread about using a MetroPCS phone on Page Plus. You can either flash it back to Verizon or you can load a Verizon PRL on it. You need the correct program, the SPC, and you must be able to settle for just Talk and Text. If you want more than Talk and Text you will need to do some configuring, which you may need to do even if it is a Verizon phone. I do highly recommend purchasing a Verizon Wireless phone. It is much easier than trying to get the SPC and loading the PRL.

I should note that I have no problems switching telephone numbers. I don't care about porting my number, etc., etc.

Go ahead and port it. It isn't a problem.

Thanks in advance for all of your help. You guys seem pretty helpful around here, so I really hope I'm not bugging y'all. I'm grateful for any advice I can get!

    No problem at all.

Feel free to ask question anytime. We're here and willing to help.

Well welcome to the wonderful world of prepaid . PP is a great place to start.

As long as you have good verizon coverage where you are PP should work great for you. As for the data portion of your question it all depends but 20MBs is not a lot, especially for a smartphone. On my unlimited data plan with sprint I use a average of 300-400MB of data a month. So it really all depends on what you are doing on the internet. 20 MB a month wouldn't be enough for me but it all depends on what you are going on. But my sister who also has an unlimited data plan with a regular non-smartphone uses less then 10 MB a month.

Nope that is one thing very nice about PP, you can use any verizon phone without a issue you do not have to buy a phone from them at all. You can purchase any verizon phone and activate it on PP without a issue.

Yes it is if you want a new phone on PP you can have one of the dealer here on HoFo do a ESN change for you for free to any other verizon phone (some people have also been able to get non-verizon phones on PP but that is a little more difficult).

On PP it isn't very difficult to switch a phone at all. I think you have read about people trying to get non-verizon phones on PP which requires a little more work. It is very easy to switch phones and you shouldn't have to have much knowledge of phones to do it. Mainly it is just over the air programming which is dialing a number and having the phone do the rest. But if you're talking about a non-verizon phone it might be quite a bit more difficult because it would require flashing, which I'm not really sure how to do.

We have been told before that PP was coming out with new plans and that came true. So I'm pretty confident that these plans should be coming.

I think you would have to flash the phone to Verizon firmware but I'm not sure on this. Someone else will probably be able to help you more.

Porting isn't that difficult so it's up to you if you want to keep your old number or if you are ok with getting a new one. If you want a new number you can PM one of the dealers on here and they will be able to set you up with a new number. (There is a sticky with a list of dealers right here in the PP forum).

Do you ever feel like one phone isn't enough? That is the HoFo effect.

    Thank You

Thank you so much for the help you have both given. I plan on sticking around and learning more, so I probably will have more questions in the future.

All of the information you both have provided sounds very promising. I think I'll just forget about the Cricket stuff for now and wait until August 6th. It is tough living without a phone, but I'd rather wait than get an ex-Verizon phone flashed to Cricket and then changed to PP. That could prove troublesome.

It sounds like it is pretty easy to just switch from a Verizon phone to PP, so I'll just start looking at some Verizon phones. I like the Moto Q9c, but it doesn't hurt to keep looking. I definitely want something with a QWERTY keyboard and am not a big fan of most sliders. I've been looking on eBay and some of cell phone sites - any favorite sellers or sites that a lot of folks have good luck with?

As far as the web goes, I doubt I'll do any YouTube or downloading big files, uploading, etc. I'll probably just check out some webpages here and there (mostly news), but I take my laptop to my internship and use internet there, and then the rest of the time I'm at home where there is easy access to the internet. I can't imagine where I would be using the internet much more - like shopping, etc. where I will use text and talk, but I won't stop what I'm doing to look at the 'net.

Verizon is pretty big here - I've never had ANY issues with my coverage on my old phone and I've had them for maybe 4 years, so I feel pretty comfortable moving to PP if they're utilizing the same network.

I REALLY hope this new service comes out at the beginning of August. I'm getting myself so hyped-up and excited!

Any other advice is appreciated! Thanks a bunch!!

Pick up a $30 Cricket phone and use up the free month. It will be good so you have a phone while you wait.

The new plan will be coming out. Don't worry.

If it is Verizon Prepaid, I've heard it is best to leave $1 balance. Otherwise, I don't think you will have any problems.

So far the 2 phones I like for Page Plus is the Q9 series or the Samsung SCH-I730. The q's are less bulky but the I730 has wifi.
