^ Your OP might have been interpreted as stating that you could place free outgoing local calls & Cdn/Intl texts from anywhere in Canada...
    Texts YES, local calls NO.

With the new CityFido, you must be in another CityFidoZone to place a free local outgoing call. If you are not in one of the 10 CFZs then you will be chaged for out-of-zone airtime (plus any applicable LD charges)

Not a city fido zone so if you came here all calls you make or receive would be charged OOZ. All calls you receive would also be charged LD.

City Koodo for example is not zoned so you can use it anywhere in Canada with no out of zone fees. LD fees would still apply but no OOZ.
Yes, of course, that's why I said 'CityFido' zones, not any city in Canada. When not in a CityFido zone, which is rare as I don't often travel to the smaller cities, I just use Magicjack for free as it only uses data. No big deal. I can't get incoming calls for free, but I just call people back. Also, that way I am in the driver's seat.

Hopefully one day though, Canadian carriers will go the way of the US and simplify things and just make the whole country one zone. That's one of the rare things I DO like about US carriers.

My contract ends in Dec 2012. Currently, I have a $5 credit on the line, but I've just noticed that the credit ends in Sept. Are all credits ending in Sept due to the F$ changes or is it just me? My contract was suppose to be -$5 the whole 2yrs. It wasnt stated explicitly, but it sounded like it because he didnt say it was going to end in 21 months when I started the current contract back in 2010.

And can I post my needs and price point for my plan in this thread or make another one so someone can suggest another company? I dont see the value of being with Fido anymore.

I had credits to the end of my plan. They started expiring here and there and I was told that they just couldn't put them in the system for longer for some reason but yes I was entitled to them until the end of my contract. Anyway, over 2-1/2 years I have had to call 5 times to get monthly credits reinstated. I kept the names, employee numbers and incident numbers of all calls so I could refer back to them and the promises made in each when I called. So you might want to phone and see if you can get them continued if that's what you were promised.

So I phone Fido a week ago to change my plan to the new $35 unlimited CityFido + $11 VP, while retaining my $30/6GB data plan effective when my contract ends shortly (and all my credits end).

Yesterday I get telemarketed by Fido. They want me to renew my contract for 2 years and upgrade to a phone with a better screen, better this and that than the iPhone - an HTC phone. I say I disagree with them that the phone is better and also have no interest as I want to do a HUP to the new iPhone and sign a new contract when it comes out. I tell them also that I already called Fido a week ago and told them I'll go month-to-month when my contract ends and switched to the new plans.

What happens next surprises me. The telemarketer tells me that effective my next billing cycle they are going to give me a $25 credit against my invoice with no commitment, no catch, no strings attached, II ask if I will lose any features I have, deals I have (ie $30/6GB) etc and he says no). And, 3 mos later he says I will get another $25 credit against my invoice and then another 3 months after that I will get another $25 credit for a total of $75 over the 6 months from my next invoice. That is, effectively, $8.33 off my invoice each month for the next 6 months. But, he says that if I enter into a new 3-year agreement that I will not get any further credits. I ask if there will be a clawback of previous credits if I enter into a new agreement and he says no. (I have learned to ask Fido every possible question I can as I've learned there is always some undisclosed fine print with them!).

Of course I said great, got the guy's name, employee number, etc etc. as I find credits always seem to mysteriously disappear and these 'mistakes' ALWAYS seem to happen in Fido's favour and never mine. Then I spend hours on the phone trying to get back what I was owed in the first place.

So, I am wondering if Fido is doing this to encourage those coming off an agreement to stay with them (for the time being anyway, because once the credits expire that incentive is certainly gone). What do you think?

They did the exact same with me. The rep lied to me and stated I was told they would end before hand. Well nope I write everything down and had 3 different reps say credits to the end of my contract. I had their names and everything. They said I had no proof and too bad. They wouldn't budge...I even escalated it to the supervisor but she said the same thing. So I took them to the BBB and then they caved. I go all my credits plus extras. I have about 1 year left on my contract. Will explore options like I did when I renewed. I'm out for the best deal.

PS - I bought a small sports cam (by veho muvi pro from amazon.com) and now record my conversations with these companies (Fido, Shaw, Telus, etc). I was gonna buy a audio recorder but for a little bit more I could get video. Sure its video but it records audio decently for my purpose. No more taking notes and names...all recorded now and saved to a file I can backup on my computer. Plus when driving/biking/surfing I have a tiny sports cam. I suggest this to anyone who talks to any company rep on the phone.

Actually, if your phone has a speakerphone option, just put the phone on speaker and record the convo using a computer that has a decent mic.
There's a free program 'Audacity' that can record audio.

Hey folks! I just signed up for the Koodo 6GB promo they had which ends today which includes:
    6GB Data
    250 Canada Wide minutes
    Evening and Weekends from 5pm
CID and VM (but sadly no Name Display)
Unltd Texts and Picture Msgs Internationally
All for $60 plus tax which is around $67 and I did not pay any activation fee, signed no contract, didnt even pay for the SIM card.

Not bad, here's what I have with Fido currently:
$17.50 200 mins Evenings and Weekends at 5pm
    $30 6GB Data
$15 Value Pack with CID w/ Name Display, VM, 1500 local texts, 1000 pic/vid msgs, WhoCalled

    Runs me $62.50/month

My contract is gonna end in September, please advise on what I should do, whether cancel my Fido acct and port to Koodo or negotiate with Retentions for a better plan? What do you think I can get?

Also I am using an Iphone 3GS i got in 2009, with the same SIM i had since then and since getting the Koodo SIM and using it I find the signal is much better in buildings, and no dropped calls. Could this have been that my Fido SIM was old?

    Thanks!

Hi everyone, I got this plan from them yesterday.

150 weekday minutes including Canadian LD (8am to 5pm)
Unlimited evenings (5pm to 8am) and weekend minutes (Friday 5pm to Monday 8am) including Canadian long-distance.
Call Display and Enhanced Voice Messaging
    250 MB
Unlimited SMS/MMS from Canada to Canadian & international numbers

The total is $40 plus tax. No contract signed. Is it a good deal?

That looks to be an exact match with Koodo's "The Works" $40 plan.
Identical including the fact that Fido new plans are probably bill by the minute instead of seconds.

    I currently have

Unlimited Canada and US calling ( which since I've had it. I've never used )
Unlimited txt for US and Canada
    100mb Flex Data
Caller ID and Voicemail and who called.

for $60 + tax It used to be $55 but my $5 data credit is over now that my Data contract is over. My current Cancellation fee is $240 if I leave right now. Contract doesnt end till Nov 2014.

Can I do better? or am I better off moving to another carrier for a better deal. I've been with Fido since the Original City Fido.

I am doing the same. Fido is basically committing fraud by constantly taking these credits off and then saying they didn't give them. Sad that they force their customers to have to monitor this and then spend hours and hours trying to get the credits back that they are supposed to have in the first place.
