    Opera as Default Browser

    Thanks to DargonBM over at the PPCGeeks Touch Pro 2 forums for these instructions on how to change the default browser from IE to Opera. I've tried it and it works with no apparent ill effects:

    Okay after messing around with this myself for a little bit I figured it out it is not only a registry entry but you also have to configure another file so i am going to go over what i did for others out there looking to do the same thing.

    First I started messing with the registry on my device I figured out that if you go to "HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila" you will find a reg key that says "DefaultBrowserIsIE" with a value of 1. If you delete that and add a new key that says "DefaultBrowserIsOpera" with a value of 1 any time TF3D would open a browser window for additional information it will use Opera (example on the weather tab if you hit the link at the bottom that says "More Detail Online" before it would open IE now it will open Opera) however if you use the search in the Internet Tab (side note in that same registry folder you can edit the "InternetSearchUrl" key to reflect your favorite search engine when using the search bar on the Internet Tab) or click on the bookmarks there it will still Open IE. To fix this you got to "\Application Data\Manila" in that folder you will find a file named "InternetPortal-en-us.xml" what I did was pull that back to my desktop unchecking the read only file attribute and opening it in notepad. When you open the file it will look something like this:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
    <InternetPortal>
    <BrowserExe>\Windows\iexplore.exe</BrowserExe>
    <IncludeUserFavorites>False</IncludeUserFavorites>
    <Banner DefaultImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\Inter netPortal\banner.qtc"
    SelectedImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\Inte rnetPortal\banner_selected.qtc"
    Text="Launch Browser"
    NavigateUrl="http://web2go.com"
    UrlText="web2go"
    Width="480"
    Height="215" />
    <OperatorLinks>
    <Link Text="YouTube" Executable="\windows\youtube.exe" ImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPort al\youtube.qtc" />
    <Link Text="CNN" NavigateUrl="http://tmobile.cnn.mlogic.mobi" ImagePath="\Windows\_Bookmark_icon.qtc" />
    <Link Text="ESPN" NavigateUrl="http://m.espn.go.com/wireless/index?z=TM" ImagePath="\Windows\_Bookmark_icon.qtc" />
    <Link Text="Facebook" NavigateUrl="http://m.facebook.com" ImagePath="\Windows\_Bookmark_icon.qtc" />
    </OperatorLinks>
    </InternetPortal>

    The thing you want to change here is "<BrowserExe>\Windows\iexplore.exe</BrowserExe>" instead you want it to be "<BrowserExe>\Windows\OperaL.exe</BrowserExe>" (side note you can also change what web page opens up when you tap on the large globe by editing the " NavigateUrl="http://web2go.com" " line and the " UrlText="web2go" " line mine point to google). Once you edit the file save it and recheck the read only file attribute and move it back onto your device over writing the existing file. Restart the device and everything is Opera.

    Hope this helps out other people feel free to rewrite it to make more sense lol.

    got this from jim_0068 on tmonews.com

    How to enable more than 2 tab limit in Opera Browser:

    1) put into the address bar the following Opera:config
    2) scroll down to user prefs and open
    3) scroll down to maximum allowed tabs and increase to your desire
    4) scroll down to end of user prefs and hit save
    5) pop up will come up, just hit ok
    6) exit opera
    7) you will now have the ability to have more tabs

    The above doesn't require a re-start

    How to possibly change opera to default browser
    (possibly because it has worked for some but not me)

    1) put into the address bar the following Opera:config
    2) scroll down to install and open
    3) check the box for browser first time launch
    4) scroll down to end and hit save
    5) pop up will come up, just hit ok
    6) exit opera
    7) restart for good measure and hope

    more to come as i figure them out as well

    I tried to make opera my defult browser by following those steps but it didnt work

    It's easier than it sounds! Just a bit tedious,but I'm not sure how you can get around editing the registry. Editing the xml file makes the earth icon on the internet tab use Opera instead of IE. At some point someone with more knowledge about installation cabs will come up with an automated method.

    interesting; I found a lot of operational parameters in the registry; specifically the keyboard backlight time-out and screen auto-brightness ranges (min and max values).

    I changed the values in small increments; and then after seeing no operational changes... altered the values by larger amounts.... with still no operational effect. I made certain to power-down the TP2 each time; and then re-read the registry to be certain the changes were still there (and they were).

    I remember years ago - when the registry was "locked" to outside edit - and there was a hack available to allow alterations; but I had no problems connecting, reading, and altering the registry on my TP2 out-of-the-box.

    Couple that with all the suggested changes in the registry for earpiece, BT, headphone volume levels that have been reported as "didn't work"... I wonder if something changed -starting with WM 6.0 - to where these standard type registry edits don't have the desired effect?

    I know; sorta bizzare question, but am trying to make sense ouf of what's happening (or "not" happening) using the usual tried & proven methods.

    I don't think there has been anything more annoying in my life than trying to install the screen protector that came in the box. Why is that thing not preinstalled?

    the way to apply screen sticker
    you MUST wash your hands clean, a bit of grease can mess up
    then wipe the screen with lightly damped cotton cloth, use duster to blow away excessive dust/lint if necessary
    prepare scotch tape (2 pieces)
    peel off the sticky side a bit (about 1/10, from corner), align along the screen, and "roll" diagonally
    if bubble formed up, use scotch tape to peel up the sticker to remove
    if dust/lint is caught, do the same thing mentioned above, and use another scotch tape to remove

    it was somewhere in the registry; I didn't note the location because changing the registry values... DIDN'T WORK ! the registry value did indeed change; as I proved that the changes "took". But the phone didn't act any different.

    Hence my post about things being different... starting with WM6.0... as far as making changes within the registry. From what I've been able to determine, there are now settings files (for example for Opera... file named "opera.ini") that plug in their own configuration values; apparently ignoring/over-riding what is kept in the registry.

    this may sound foolish.....
    but after you changed your registry, you have to put it to sleep mode once, bring it back, and power cycle your PDA

    Any time you change your registry you must power cycle/reboot your phone for the setting to take effect.
