RAZR V3 build quality getting worse?

I bought the V3 in Black when it 1st came out back in 2004ish, and I went on to use it for 2 years and then gave it to my dad to use for another couple years. It felt sturdy and the casing felt like it was really make of metal. One of my relatives in India is STILL using the fone, and it's fine.

However, now I have a Blue V3 as a backup fone, I bought in 2007, and it's complete garbage. I barely used it a year, and the hinge is already toast. The body doesn't feel as strong as the black one did.

Obviously the price of the fone has gone down from over $600 when it came down to like $60, but it seems like the quality of the phone has gotten worse too?

I have a 2005ish Cingular V3xx that I still use. I think it has more to do with what variant you get, I got one of the metal one's and it's still going strong. The mini USB / charger port cover is halfway loose now, but other than that the hinge is good, keypad is still strong, etc.

The quality didn't go down, you just got a lousy phone. My friend worked at Cingular in retail for 10 years and then recently took an AE promotion with them. During that time I have heard EVERY RAZR story imaginable.

It's funny that Cing/ATT was selling RAZRs until '08 was absurd for a phone that old but many corporate clients kept ordering them.

I was not a fan of the original RAZR model itself because of how many flaws it had, but I am a Moto fanboy and did like the success that Moto had. if the original RAZR wasn't successful then I wouldn't have had all the enjoyment that I had out of my V9x. (and almost every phone in between)

Any phone you buy is going to have lemons due to mass production. The RAZR launch price was insane, but mainstream people were buying them in masses mainly because Paris Hilton was walking around with one (and the economy was a lot better back then).

The RAZRs dropped in price because the successors were so much better which included the likes of the V3i, V3xx, K1, V8, V9, V9x. When these phones came out it severely showed the original V3's age!

Moto's quality in general are very good!

    As for their latest innovations...

I have a V3xx that is metal and feels solid/sturdy. I was at Best Buy checking out the newer prepaid Razrs... The newer Razrs were made of plastic, cheap/loose side buttons and the keypad feedback was terrible. I don't know if its just the demo/display phones that are made this way or what....but, I wouldn't use one. I'd rather buy a slightly used & older Razr.

I don't know if your Best Buys are like this, but all the Best Buys by me in Chi-Town use plastic dummy models for all their phones.

This. And not just BB's, but Verizon stores as well. My sis uses a newer Razr and it's made out of plastic. It's got a big gaping hole on the bottom from where she dropped it. I have an original V3C that was purchased from BB for about $450. It's made out of metal and has endured a ridiculous amount of abuse. Today, nearly 4 yrs later, it still sounds better than any of my Tour's did. And aside from dings and scratches, there's nothing at all wrong w/ the device. It's a friggin' tank.

There IS definitely a difference in Razr quality over the years.

As a technician working with the CDMA version of the RAZR, I'd also agree they've gotten worse in quality. The V3c was absolutely awesome, followed by the V3m, which was also a very good handset. The V3m was followed by the V3a, which is complete junk. Now, they have a new version of the V3m, which isn't even close to the quality of the original V3m.

The failing economy must be taking a toll on them, too.
