I have the $5.99 Tmobileweb and my previous phone was the Sony Ericsson TM506. I have very poor reception in my home, though good service elsewhere in my community. I love the fact that with my TM506 I can use Opera Mini, Gmail app, Google Maps, etc. But I would like to use my phone (if only to receive calls) at home. So I bought a Nokia 6301 (ebay). The phone is clean and easy to use, and I get great service via UMA at home, but I would like to use the other apps like Opera, etc.
I have read about downloading some Proprietary Software (Phoenix) and firmware images on this forum to flash the phone to an unbranded version, which would allow me to use these apps. I consider myself fairly technically savvy, but I hesitate to use software that has to be downloaded from less than reliable sources. I also have read some horror stories about people losing UMA access after upgrading firmware. If not for the UMA access, I would stick with the TM506.
Are there any other options? Will T Mobile offer a firmware upgrade that allows these other apps to access the internet? Does the v8.22 allow this? Am I stuck with using the TM506 for applications and the 6301 for UMA when at home or traveling abroad?
I realize this may be a little redundant, so i appreciate your understanding.
Did you backup your phone settings (using the backup option on the phone - settings > Sync and backup > Create backup) to the SD card prior to upgrading your firmware? And if you did, did UMA not work after restoring the backup?
Funny, I also just upgraded from the tm-506 to the 6301 and have similar questions about updating the firmware. I read about possible changes to the menu and shortcut options and I like them the way they are. I don't care about the UMA though.

Apparently i did NOT do that... I had no clue that Wi-Fi was going to NOT work by just upgrading the Firmware!
Does anyone have a copy of the 6301 settings? Pleaseeeeeee
Restoring UMA to 'upgraded' Nokia 6301 8.22 firmware
Rejuvenating old thread in case anyone is still stuck with this problem.
My Tmobile account and several family plan phones were due for renewal, so I got a couple of Nokia 6301s (currently free with a rebate). Stupidly, I upgraded both to the 8.22 firmware from the Nokia site before I realized it killed UMA, much to the consternation of my better half.
Fortunately, found this on the Tmobile forum, and it worked perfectly. Apparently the Nokia upgrade removes the proprietary security certificates that are required to get on the system through UMA. The Phoenix software downloads a file that has them and now everything is hunky dory.
For those of you who have a functional 6301 with the oem firmware, DON'T upgrade (at least for now). The 'enhancements' in the new version seem to be for other phone bugs and/or minor cosmetic changes to the UI.

My 6301b never got the memo that you lose UMA when you upgrade to 8.22. Both of mine upgraded without a hitch and got on the router and made calls no problems. What's up with that? I am always amazed when what should be a universal process turns up exceptions. This time I was on the right side of the exception. Other times I've not been so lucky.
EDIT: After reviewing the thread on T-Mobile it appears either my NSU wasn't screwed up when I flashed it or doing a backup prior to flashing and restoring afterward, as is suggested in NSU, actually is good practice.
