...or, if you can somehow get your hands on a smartphone, try that with your grandfathered UMB plan. Over at Bell, the big un-secret apparently is that Bell is allowing smartphones on grandfathered UMB plans. I was going to suggest buying a smartphone but the grace period allowed would likely not give you sufficient time to assess whether or not the phone would be compatible with UMB. Maybe you have a friend with a smartphone who's willing to lend it to you...
I'm borrowing my roomates C6 for the time being and not a fan of it...too heavy and bulky, etc...
I can definitely get my hands on a friends smartphone to try out, but wont I get charged for the data usage? How will I know that the UMB is working with it?

If a data plan is required, you should get a text message from Rogers asking you to buy a data plan when you try to go online. That being said, to be on the safe side, you should check MyRogers or call in after a couple of days to see if data has been charged.
Just tried a UMB sim in a Rogers branded smartphone (Nokia n86) and got the text message asking to purchase data plan.
But as a possible new alternative, Fido did recently release the lg gossip pro (Android 2.3 portrait qwerty) as a non-smartphone. If the trend continues, it may be usable on Rogers UMB like other Fido non-smartphones (Vivaz Pro, C6).
Changing the topic, some Rogers users got a SMS message announcing data pass changes effective Nov 28, 2011. I don't know if the unlimited weekly data day pass will be affected.
Did these go into effect? Nothing has changed on the Rogers site.
I've still be able to use UMB as part of my $15 value plan on my Vivaz Pro. Any updates on usage on smartphones? How about Fido quick message devices like the Galaxy Q or Gossip Pro?

Your Value Pack, with UMB, should be grandfathered for life. I had that for years until I ported to Bell. Incidentally I also was using a Vivaz Pro with the UMB (and a Nokia 5800 prior to that).
I have a Rogers branded Nokia N95 on a prepaid account. In the past, I have used the $1 Unlimited Mobile Browsing (UMB) Day Pass through the "GoRogers" access point to check GMail, use Google Maps, browse with Opera Mini, etc.
My understanding is that "GoRogers" is a WAP access point, whereas "Rogers Internet" is a packet access point which should provide a faster, and more functional, connection.
Now that the UMB Day Pass has been replaced with a straight up $1 for 10MB Data Day Pass, does that mean I can/should now use the "Rogers Internet" access point instead of "GoRogers"?
