    Unlocking code question

    Hey there,
I have a question for the community about unlocking. Search feature didn't bring up anything to answer this.

I have an unlocked Z6. Bought it brand new that way. I've been told by many people to buy a subisdy/unlock code before I start any modifications to the phone. Since it's already unlocked, how do I know that the unlock code I get will work? The sarcastic answer is to flash it with a locked firmware and then try the code. But if the code is wrong, then I'm unable to use my phone.

How do you test an unlocking code on a currently unlocked phone? I don't know of any "locking" software to lock the phone to my current provider and then try the unlocking code. Leap of faith?

    Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

If you purchased an unlocked phone, why would you need an unlock code? Just be sure that any firmware that you install on the phone doesn't lock the phone. If it does, then purchase an unlock code. Several people have mentioned unlockers on eBay that send codes within minutes of purchase.

There are some Motorola Firmware packages which, when flashed to the phone, will re-lock it. That situation also applies to many, if not all, software updates which may be downloaded from Motorola and applied to a phone. I cannot say definitely that it applies to the Z6, but it wouldn't surprise me. Any one else with more info please???

Yeah. I'm going to double check and try to be as careful as I can. But knowing my luck, it'll be 2am while doing the update and the updater service will be down. Then my gf will send me a text and get annoyed that I didn't reply back. lol

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Just happened to me with my Rizr Z3 when I updated the phone software...did not realize it would lock me out. Now I need the unlock code but don't have it handy and can't get it again from the person that gave me the phone....ARGGGHHHH!

That's a pain in the butt! However, all is not lost. The unlock (aka "subsidy") code does not change when the phone is re-flashed. The code can be obtained from various sellers on E-Bay and other sources.

    Thumbs up

Well I got lucky and remembered the unlock code after trying it 2 or 3 times. To unlock a T-Mobile phone that I am using on AT&T the code is 8 zeros. No need to pay for anything like that. Plus it does turn out that I happen to have the phone number of the person that gave me the code and the phone originally...he just happens to work for Motorola.
