    Opera Mini 5 on TM-506

Today, the beta for Opera Mini 5 was released. I downloaded it to the TM-506 with no problems. It's quite an upgrade. Now there's tab browsing and password retention among other things.

To download it, I typed this link into the phone's default browser:

    m.opera.com/next

If you want to read more about the features, they're listed here:

Version 5 is definitely an awesome upgrade, but I've already run into a glitch. Whenever I go to bookmark a page and add it to the new Speed Dial homepage, I'll hover the cursor over the SD entry I want to use, and then hit select. Every time I do that, the moment I hit the select key, I'm booted out of the program and back to the home screen. The phone doesn't freeze and no error message is displayed, OM just instantly closes.

Version 5 JUST came out and is still in beta, so hopefully this will be fixed in future releases. I'm keeping version 4.2 installed as my main browser until a final version of 5 comes out.

That's weird. It seems to be working for me. I selected an empty box, selected Assign and a box popped up for me to enter a URL in.

My bad, I described the problem wrong. I checked again and this is what happens: when in the "edit bookmark" screen, I'll go down to where it displays the folder that bookmark is in. When I hover the cursor over that folder and then hit select, THAT is when Opera Mini instantly closes.

There's also a glitch with the time. The time OM displays is consistently one hour slow. The weird part is it varies from standard 12 hour time to 24 hour time. It will go back and forth each time I open and close OM.

Ok, I duplicated your edit bookmark error. It's when you try to change the formula it exits out. The time thing is probably them not remembering to compensate for daylight savings time. Although I couldn't get it to duplicate the error you were having where it switches between 12 hour and 24 hour. My phone is set to 24 hour time and that's what the browser would show.

z28 james---looks like you found another bug. I can't find away to change the speed dial entries once a position has been assigned.

I reported these errors to opera here:

    http://mini.bugs.opera.com/

Hope we have a new version soon.

Highlight the one you want to change, then press and hold whichever button you use to select links(for the TM506 its the center button on the joystick).

A context menu will pop up, allowing you to edit or delete the item.

The entire browser is very poorly documented, so I was lucky to find this on a whim.

My only gripe so far is that the address and search bars don't default to "edit" when selected, forcing me to double click every time.

I can confirm that bug as well. I agree that a new version needs to be released soon.

Overall I'm not all that impressed with version 5. I don't like the large menus/buttons that are optimized for touchscreens....takes up too much screen space. The GUI is very attractive, but I don't find it intuitive. I'll reserve final judgment for when the final version comes out though (knowing Opera, probably a year from now).

EDIT: there is also no sync feature, which I really miss

Read above about speed dial. (Hold the selection button down to bring up a context menu).

As far as the GUI is concerned, if you press * twice, everything goes away. This leaves a very streamlined and simplistic interface, without taking away functionality.

Yeah, things like that should be listed in the "shortcuts" page under the Help section, or documented elsewhere. Thanks for posting it.

Any idea why Opera Link (synchronization) was left out? Right now its a HUGE PITA to add all my bookmarks from version 4.2.

I believe it's because it's a beta, but it might also be due to the fact that it's a rarely used feature... or they're retooling it.

You could use a service like delicious.com temporarily.

To change that go to Settings\Advanced and turning Inline Editing to On.

I've done that with OM 5 as well as other apps. The SE interface for entering text is always far superior to what comes included with apps.

Overall, I'm still finding version 5 difficult to use. The GUI is slick, but that's where the niceness ends. Every time I use version 5, and then go back to 4.2, I realize how much faster I am at navigating the older version. It's not as simple as getting used to 5 either, because I've been using steadily ever since it came out. Opera says they've "optimized" it for use on phones with touchscreens, and that may be, but it seems that OM's usefulness on keypad phones has suffered as a result.

The double tap is still prevalent, as that only changes the editing mode.
