Hello, and welcome to the first edition of Maemo Weekly News. This, as the name suggests, is a new weekly digest of news and announcements from in and around the Maemo community. Our team of intrepid contributors are deeply embedded within all facets of the Maemo and 770, N800, N810 and N900 community; whether that's on IRC, talk.maemo.org, maemo.org Downloads, blogs, Twitter or the mailing lists. They read and process all the info, so you don't have to!
As this is the first issue, things are still bedding in - features such as the top downloads for the week, the newest downloads and the top bugs are still under development. Also, we're still looking for contributors; so if you feel like you stumble across Maemo items which are well hidden, and of interest to others, please hit "Read more" link to get involved. The key thing to all of us is that this adds lots of value, without taking up lots of our time. If laziness, hubris and a desire to help others are qualities you recognise in yourself, get in touch!
The finished product represents a substantial contribution to the Maemo community and it will be produced weekly, every week, with a series of sections - probably similar to those on tmo:
•Front page (front)
The front page of the issue. Most of the content here will be decided by the sub-editors and editors whilst pulling the issue together.
•Applications (apps)
Applications, games and utilities. Substantial news or exciting new developments.
•Development (devel)
News impacting the development of Maemo applications.
•Community (community)
Community news, events, efforts. For example, council elections etc.
•Devices (devices)
OS news, device news, ...
•Maemo in the Wild (wild)
Exciting instances of Maemo being discussed outside the main Maemo community.
•Announcements (announce)
Key announcements from around the Maemo community which don't go anywhere else.
Even if the N900 isn't quite ready for mass market appeal, that doesn't mean that it's not the perfect device for many of the Engadget elite. With impressive power and out-of-the-box hackability, this QWERTY handset is a tinkerers dream. In fact, Tomasz Sterna has already recompiled the kernel to add joystick (and mouse) support. He then pieced together enough code to turn the N900 into a portable Sixaxis gaming console that brings SNES gaming to any TV. Fire up the N900's Bluetooth, then kick back and immerse yourself in a land of 16-bit dinosaurs and chubby Italian plumbers -- good times. See the finished product after the break.
Play games on Nokia N900 with PS3 Sixaxis controller
A Taste Of Things To Come...
1. Update the kernel
This is an excerpt of an earlier post.
Get kernel-modules package and dpkg -i it, or just tap kernel-modules.install from N900 MicroB.
Get zImage-2.6.28-20094803.3+0m5+0hid0 to your workstation and reflash kernel:
This is an excerpt of an earlier post.
Get xserver-xorg-input-joystick package and dpkg -i it, or just tap xserver-xorg-input-joystick.install from N900 MicroB.
3. Install SixA daemon
Get sixad package and dpkg -i it, or just tap sixad.install from N900 MicroB.
It will additionally install joystick-2-keyboard mapping, to emulate mouse and key presses by joystick. Left stick simulates mouse movement, right stick simulates scroll wheels, directional pad simulates arrow keys and buttons are mapped as on the following picture:
4. Usage
1.Activate Bluetooth on N900
2.Press PS button on controller
3.Wait for the BT icon to turn blue and sixaxis button stop flashing
4.Map keys in your console emulator settings
5.HAVE FUN!
TIPS
To disconnect SIXAXIS just turn off Bluetooth

Moblin and maemo are merging! We are taking the best pieces from these two open source projects and are creating the MeeGo software platform. Both teams have worked for a long time to support the needs of the mobile user experience - and MeeGo will make this even better. We want it to be fun, focused, flexible, technically challenging and ultimately, something that can change the world.

We shall see. However, looking at the 3 Maemo devices that I have now I realize that Nokia has always come through in the end.
On Monday, just after the release of our third issue, Nokia and Intel held a joint press conference to announce that the roadmaps of Moblin and Maemo were converging. The resulting operating system, MeeGo, would target phones, tablets and netbooks and be held under the stewardship of the Linux Foundation as a fully open source OS: The announcement dealt with the technical and governance aspects but the large Maemo community was thrown into turmoil. What was the impact on Maemo 6, due out later this year with pre-release SDKs expected shortly? What about the Maemo Community Council and the summit? What about talk.maemo.org; was MeeGo just for "techies"? The timing was unfortunate for our issue, but we never claimed to be timely - just to try and encompass the broadest range of news about Maemo! So, the last week has provided many of the answers:
* All the community aspects were left to the community to thrash out, this left us scratching our heads as to who was in each of the communities and how they could work together. This has started to solidify with the people involved having discussions and a website scope meeting planned. The March Community Council elections will continue as planned, with a large scope of work ahead of them.
* Maemo 6 will be released under the "MeeGo" brand and the official answer of "we don't know" for whether or not Nokia will be releasing Harmattan officially for the N900 is still up in the air. However, given MeeGo's open source base, the chances of it being ported to the N900 are higher than perhaps they were before.
* MeeGo will use RPM rather than the deb package format Maemo has used to date. Indeed, most of the implementation of the lower parts of the platform (which are common in architecture but obviously subtly different in code) seem to be coming from Moblin. One of Moblin's targets is the five-second boot which, although of limited direct use in an always-on ARM device, can only bring benefits elsewhere in the system in terms of performance.
* OBS, as used by Mer, and provided by Novell, will (almost certainly) be the local and remote build system; replacing Scratchbox and the maemo.org autobuilder. However, with cross-platform and cross-compiling development tools like Qt Creator and MADDE (or its cousins) continue, such low-level details will be hidden from most end-user application developers (unless they choose to get stuck into them).
MeeGo is the single most important thing to happen to Maemo since the 770 was announced. There are still many questions and the future of the Maemo community will be whatever we make it. As such, this issue of MWKN will have as the top stories in each section the most applicable and important MeeGo news for developers and the community.
Valério Valério has kicked off the Maemo community's second year of involvement in Google's Summer of Code. GSoC is a mentorship programme, sponsored by Google, whereby projects will be given paid students for the summer. Valério says, Last year's programme was successful and so if you have an idea which a student could implement and/or are willing to act as a mentor, please pitch your idea on the wiki and get involved.
We're still on the lookout for contributors and sub-editors who can either send links our way or flesh out the links into the issue we publish on a Monday. To start off as a contributor, all you have to do for your interview is send a few tweets @mwkn. Sub-editors are also welcome, please just get in touch if you're interested.
And for those who are spreading FUD about the lack of future developement...

This^ of course is not an "official" Nokia document but rather a compilation of quotes (with links) of various statements made on the subjects by Nokia employees.
It represents a monumental effort by the volunteers at maemo.org in an attempt to limit the "Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt" (FUD) on these subjects that has been flying about lately.
Major Kudos for those responsible.
***
Being a "compilation of quotes" it at times reads like a script by Michael Moore or a treatment for a new movie by the people who brought us "This is Spinal Tap".
However, in the absence of anything "Official", Nokia once again is relying on volunteers from the open source community to do its heavy lifting and this effort may highlight some of Nokia's past marketing inconsistencies.
One quote of note is in response to the question:
Why free Ovi Maps for Symbian has been annouced and there is still nothing for Maemo 5 ?
In developer terms, Symbian had already navigation implemented and removing the payment step was simple. Maemo didn't have navigation implemented so no matter what new policies come, the implementation must be developed first.
(source)
Maemo didn't have navigation implemented?
I guess someone should let these guys know >> HERE << before there is some kind of misunderstanding.
Find your position quickly and accurately with the built-in Assisted-GPS receiver. The Nokia N900 works seamlessly with Ovi Maps to give you the quickest available route as you make your way from A to B.
-Assisted-GPS receiver
-Ovi Maps pre-installed
Navigation and "make your way from A to B" for marketing types must mean two different things... I mean they are even spelled differently aren't they?
The next Maemo Community Council will have their work cut out for them with the large shifts in Maemo caused by the MeeGo announcement. Dave Neary has opened the nominations for the next six-month term of the community council. Eligible candidates can be nominated by anyone in the community (although they have to accept the nomination to make it on to the ballot paper) or can put themselves forward as a candidate: At the time of writing, only Randall Arnold and Andrew Black are candidates in the field. Nominations will be accepted until 16th March, but if you're thinking of standing - announce early and announce often!
I took a break from posting on HoFo for the past two weeks or so because of my involvement in the Maemo Community Council elections as a candidate. I made the decision late in the process because of the apparent lack of candidates (2). Immediately after announcing 8 more candidates declared to round out the ticket.
I didn't expect to win but took the opportunity to promote the value of engaged users like us who happen to rely on forums for much of our information.

On the off chance that I did win a seat on the council I did not want the appearance of having used my position on HoFo to an unfair advantage.

Congratulations to Randall Arnold, Andrew Flegg, Attila Csipa, Javier S. Pedro, and Ryan Abel on their election to this, the 4th Maemo Community Council.

Whoa there Billy. Before you go a flashing your own N900, you should keep in mind a few of the things pointed out by maemo.org member Lehto in his >> Holy Grail << post on talk/maemo.org:
• They (the modded kernels) will make the about page say <unknown> for the hardware and software. (So the Nokia Software Updater will not work and you will have to manually flash your device if you wish to upgrade to the new firmware).
• There is an additional speed step down from 250mhz. So instead of 250mhz idle it now sits @ 125mhz idle with lower voltage. 125/250/500/550/xxx instead of 250/500/550/600.
• You are sacrificing machine lifetime by running it overclocked and stressing it at 100% for longer periods of time.
• Everything will feel faster and is faster.
• The fastest kernels might not work on your phone, this is purely down to luck of how good chip you’ve got in your phone. Climate affects it also along with many other variables. (If you like in a warm climate, do not try anything more than 800 MHz).
• This (the overclocking procedure) requires only flashing the new kernel in, the phone setups and apps will stay. Only the clock speed increases.

I had promised my self I wouldn't post about the next firmware release from Nokia for the N900 then all 'ell broke loose on the dang intertubes Sunday while I was away on some personal bidnezz.
So I asked in that thread (I think it was. Some threads were merged and what have you.) after I came home and the link was removed:

If So: Then someone knows the producer of this leaked build.
If So: What is the purpose of this leak?
...just wondering.

On one hand it is good to know things are improving but on the other hand most of this is known from the SDK analysis.
I can wait because in both the SDK and users reports nothing is going to be added that will allow me to jump higher, run farther, or see through solid oblects or suttin'
The problems I do foresee on this forum are down the road.
As new apps are announced here, developers may get useless feedback from users who may still have this build installed.
Instead of collaborative threads where improvements come quickly, these threads may become bogged down with Billy's "Your program made my phone crash" nonsense.
3 pages later Billy's negative statement is traced back to Billy's installation or flash history and not the announced application itself. By that time many have moved on and nothing is accomplished.
I didn't get any response but later this was posted by a fellow I have great respect for and who has been a great help to my self and others on that board:

Since no one has stepped up, I'll try to answer some of the questions banging away in that head of yours and maybe some of those voices you keep hearing will stop for awhile.
No one knows for sure if this leaked "bin" file that can be flashed to your phone is free of malicious code because it didn't come from Nokia's official software repository. It came from some dude on the internet. The same way your porn, texts from that "hot" girl who you called on that special 900 number, and all those emails offering you wealth from unclaimed accounts in Nigeria do.
However, some brave souls have installed it and one fellow who wishes to remain anonymous posted this screen shot of his new "About product" screen after it was installed.
No one has reported weird stuff happening and most feel it was worth the agg. This makes sense because the N900 just recently launched in China and some believe this is the image file that was shipped with the devices that went on sale there on May 1st.
This^ looks to me to be the same info our man posted in the first image.
In a way this is good as it gives some of us casual developers time to adjust. For instance the back space and caps key images for the new on screen key board are not in most of the older themes. While browsing in portrait mode is vastly improved because of the addition of a back key and a means to minimize a browser session to the dashboard from portrait, the page size in portrait is now slightly smaller. If you have coded portrait pages in anticipation of this easier browsing experience, you will also have to make adjustments.
However, (< I like using that word. It sorta gives the post a dramatic pause and makes me look intelligent too.)
... as I was saying. However, the link to the original leaked file has been removed. You're right young grasshopper, there be torrents and other links a plenty on the internet. But again, that's just more opportunity for evil doers or just a random smart *** to piss in your oatmeal, savvy?
The official release is just around the corner and in fact might be here by the time I finish this freakin' letter to your ungrateful buttocks.
I am not advising you to try this leaked file or whatever you find and can stuff into your dang phone. However, ( <There it is again. It does make me sound deep and mysterious, don't it?) you're a dang kid and kids do some pretty stupid **** . So all I can offer its this...
If what you download doesn't have at least these properties:
Name: RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.12-9_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin Date Modified: 3/31/2010 11:31 AM Type: BIN file Size: 182,745 KB
... you are guaranteed a brick and will have do go back to selling your butt on the streets or whatever it is you did to earn enough money for the dang phone in the first place.
