Newbie: A Girl and her SH-06A

Hello Everyone. I'm new to this forum, and new to the NJWWTICKC. "Non-Japanese who want to import cool Keitai's club."

I have to admit that I feel a bit saddened after reading through several postings because it seems that the features that I love and use the most with my phone would no longer work, if I decided to keep this phone, after returning to the states. Essentially doing so, is almost like downgrading my phone.

Having moved to Japan earlier this year, it was necessary for me to buy a keitai here, and I just happened to go with Docomo and buy the SH-06a. My initial sadness was that a) unlike the 933sh, I didn't have the option to have a cool "opening flip phone" sound, and b) I didn't have permanent movable widgets upon opening the phone.

But, I got over it, and now that I am used to it, I really like the touch cruiser, and feel that only having the screen rotate when I flip the screen is much preferred as I remember being frustrated with my iPhone in the states because of the whole - I didn't tilt it, yet the screen flipped issue.

I'm glad that I'll be in Japan for at a minimum two years, before returning home because for me, having a cellphone without Internet capability is kind of a deal breaker. Especially after having the iPhone in the states, and having internet, TV, O-saifu keitai, etc with my Sh-06a while in Japan.

I hope that Docomo will allow me to continue using my phone when they come to the states, otherwise, it will just end up as the coolest omiyage ever when I go home, and then it will be back to the iPhone. Perhaps by that time, they will have a 5 MP camera in the iPhone 5G, and maybe that will be half as cool? *shrugs*

I believe if you were to use your sh-06a here in the states, they would count as roaming charges... aka $2 per minute of talk time or $1 per SMS. I completely understand, it's like we can't have both things at the same time! I want a nice keitai, but I need internet as well. If you really want to use a keitai in the states, you have to get the Chinese or Taiwanese version, but they come at a hefty price, though the amount of attention you get is worth the price.

I guess your choices are roaming UIM or hypersim.

Yeah, I have friends who go back home to visit and use International roaming with Softbank and everything works, but I feel like it's a bit impractical.

At least my understanding is that Hypersim or iNex only allow you voice and text capability.

I really, really hope that Docomo pulls though and opens up a US operation by the time I come home.

Similarly to the iphone when I had it, I use data MUCH more than anything else. While I feel that the iPhone has been overly played up as the Holy Grail of cell phones in the US, and has become quite popular in Japan as well, it has done one thing for me; it has essentially revolutionized the way I think about and use cellular technology.

If the SH-06 didn't have the Full-Browser web interface, along with GPS, and Applications, I wouldn't have purchased it. Calls are expensive to make here, so I mostly use e-mail from my phone which is free in Japan, and also you can purchase a "Packet Houdai" plan for 4,000 yen. So that 4,000 yen ($40) buys me unlimited data which allows me to access the internet, check my Yahoo and Gmail accounts, surf on facebook while on the train or watch TV on my SH-06a. I use the GPS when driving, and its nice to be able to send those super crisp pictures via e-mail to friends when the need arises. Heck, I would pay top dollar for any solution that would allow me to use the data networks on ANY of the major US carriers.

So to IonNuke, How is it that you have network capability on your cellphone in the US, despite the fact that you don't have a need for it? Because if I can do that and keep this phone, or whatever phone I purchase in the future before I leave Japan, I'm buying THAT product.

Why don't you get the Taiwanese version of the phone if you really want to use a keitai in the US. I understand that the Chinese and Taiwanese version are released later than SoftBank's release, but if data is important, then I would suggest getting one of those instead. That's how I ended up with the 9020c (923sh from SoftBank) because data is important to me.

Hmmm. Ya know, I think I'll probably do that, since in two or three years, I'll probably want to buy a different phone anyhow. Thanks. =) I'll look into it.
