Jim is a better one to ask. He did it as he is on T-Mobile.
AT&T is now giving away unlock codes to people who paid for their phone outright, which you've done.
I already spoke to an AT&T CSR and they have taken the IMEI down and said they will phone me back in about 5-7 (business) days. All I did was say I bought the phone outright (I am guessing they can see if the phone is on contract by the IMEI) and didn't need any proof sent in by fax or anything.
Hopefully all will work out and I can get the subsidy unlock code without any problems.
If I don't keep the Nuvifone, are there any recommendations here on what I could trade it for on Craigslist? I am definitely thinking Android. Having it be sealed in the box with the unlock code might make it worth a little more...?
By the way, the Garmin Nuvi 295W is now down to $200 from $280.
I have used the G60 in November '09 for one month and returned it after At&t was adamant about making pay for their unlimited data plan though this phone came pre-loaded with maps and built-in GPS. I argued it was a feature phone, not a smartphone.
Monday At&t will change its pricing plan. They still require all smartphones to have data plan (even if you bought it full price, like on ebay), but you can pay $15 a month for 200 MB.
I thought it might be wiser to wait until June 9 for the new Garminphone, but T-Mobile doesn't give any kind of data plan price breakdown.
After watching YouTube videos of first looks of the Garminphone, I do think the new version is better but can't stand the little Android monster at boot-up and the huge pink "Stick Together" of T-Mob. I'm sorry; I just can't.
For a guy like me who just wants to talk on a phone, have a built-in GPS, and occasionally snap and upload pictures to my Flickr account. The ol' G60 from ATT makes more sense.
I wish I can have your opinion before signing a two-year contract.
I agree that for some people the Garmin Nuvifone G60 may be a better a choice. Since you don't want to see the Android logo, that won't be an issue with the G60. You could use T-Mobile without having a data plan, but you would still see "T-Mobile" along the top of the G60. Plus you will get a little bit of data from T-Mobile T-Zones. That will even allow you to use YellowPages.com.
As a side note, if you brought a different phone to AT&T, signed up for voice only, and then took the SIM and put it in the G60, can AT&T somehow detect that you have a smartphone?
AT&T detects the phone on it's postpaid plans. If you got a gophone and put that sim in there it would not be a problem. Also, T-Mobile prepaid gives the most value for the G60 as you can use its features without paying for additional data. I wish I had gotten one (or more) of those discount G60s. I'll keep waiting...
IcOnBoy:
Have you decided on what to do with it? Keep it or sell it?
I would like to sell/trade it on Craigslist for something Android-y. Wondering if a Nexus One would be swapped for the unlocked Nuvifone — or is that wishful thinking?
Don't want to sell it for like $100. If that is all I could get, then I might as well keep it as a backup phone.
I know I can't get $300 for it unless I try and EBay it. Suggestions folks...?
I had the 1st Gen iPhone and although it was nice at the time, it never truly wowed me! For me, iPhone was just so-so. I have always been wowed by the HTC flip clock weather thingy - that just looks sharp to me! I am guessing the new Garminfone won't do that...?
I stopped at the Mall Of America today and the Garminfone was in stock at both of the T-Mobile Stores there, as well as the Radio Shack. The Radio Shack had a higher asking price, but they have no re-stocking fee if you return it withing 30 days. It will be interesting to see what happens on 06-19-2010.
I've been crunching numbers and I've pretty much written off the Garminfone A50 due to cost alone ( I have to buy it in US $ too, which is about $560 CDN tax incl from Amazon). I plan to cut my monthly plan down as well, thanks in part to yet another new tax here in Ontario. HST is 13% on most goods or services, even gasoline. That will be an 8% increase. I did not get an 8% raise this year to offset it.
My monthly plan will drop from about $60 to under $20 mostly by removing data.
I think I'll be seeking out an unwanted G60. I'm bidding on one on ebay, but an open to anyone here that has a G60 they may want to part with if they get the Garminfone.
I played with the Garminphone at the Gateway mall here in Salt Lake. Then I went back to the AT&T store and opted for the Nuvifone. I didn't feel the Garminphone's OS was such a step forward to justify T-mobile's high monthly rates. Moreover, the Nuvifone is slightly smaller in size than the Garminphone but yet manage to have a bigger screen. You can't beat the G60's free price with a two-year agreement, and with AT&T's new data plan, I only pay $15 a month vs. $30 at T-Mobile. Since the GPS is built-in (for both devices), you don't use cellular data usage when you navigate. You only do for sending emails, pictures, etc... out of a wifi zone. The $15 a month plan is good for 200 MB a month or 400 pictures.
Android was a good move for Garmin, but I'm not sure moving to T-Mobile was.
