    Garmin Nuvifone G60

I just looked at the first post here and it has been nearly two years ago. Anyway, is anybody here still using the Garmin Nuvifone G60? I am still using mine, but it has become my GPS in my pickup truck. I do have it unlocked and I do have a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card in it for the YellowPages.com function. I would still like to switch it to the APAC version, but at this point I am certainly not holding my breath! It sure would be nice, though, for the Google search functionality.

Have been using my G60 for the last year on a daily basis...and loved it (I'm an airline pilot). Just bought an old iPhone 3G on eBay for fun. Have been using iPhone for less than a week. I hate to say this but even an old iPhone blows my G60 out of the water.

However, the G60 has such an excellent voice quality. I've never had a cell phone where the quality was so crisp. Better than the iPhone.

Typing on iPhone is more accurate. Of course, iPhone apps are fun.

The G60 is smaller than any iPhone on the market. But the iPhone is thinner.

Change Carrier/Region Firmware On The AT&T Garmin Nuvifone G60

This might work on the Garmin Nuvifone G60, too:

I want to try it on my old G60 AT&T version as well , but I can't find the original .update file from the AT&T phone on the net. There are plenty for Europe and Asia but not for USA?? Anyone have it?

    Instructions: (worked for me)

    1. Have two micro SD cards
    2. On one put the same update file that is already on your phone.
    2. On the other put the new firmware you want to update to.
    3. With phone off practise taking phone cover off/on and removing SD card.
    4. Turn phone on with SD card that had existing firmware update on. Update notice will show and ask if you want to update - say yes, then it should say update is the same as already on your phone do you still want to update, don't accept or decline. Now quickly pull off cover and exchange SD cards and put cover back on. You may get a message about battery cover - go ok. Then the same 'do you want to update' message should appear - go ok.(you may need to pull down the yellow exclamation from the top to accept the update if the window does not show) Be patient and wait your screen will show 'verifing' then reboot and could be a black screen for 10-15 minutes. When up and running you should do a master clear as your old settings/apps will still be on phone. It may be ok to leave them on??

Garmin nüMaps Lifetime For The Garmin Nuvifone G60

I am just wondering if anybody here has sprung for the Garmin nüMaps Lifetime for the Nuvifone G60? My Garminfone A50 has them and I just bought one for my wife's Garmin Nuvi 500 last week. (They had a deal for under $50 shipped to the door.) If I see another deal for $50 or less, I will probably buy it. I guess part of my concern is how much longer my Nuvifone G60 is going to last, since I just use it as my de facto vehicle GPS day to day. (I do like having the YellowPages.com through the T-Mobile pre-paid SIM card.) Do you guys think it is worth putting $50 into a Garmin nüMaps Lifetime purchase or do you think the G60 won't last long enough to make it worthwhile? Part of me keeps reminding myself that some new Garmins aren't much more than $100 now!

I wouldn't spend the money to buy the lifetime maps when for $50 more you can get a new unit with lifetime maps. Used Garminfones on ebay are going for around $50-$125 on average.

I thought you had a Garminfone was well?

    AT&T Garmin Nuvifone G60

Yes, we have three Garmins, well three working Garmins:

-Garmin Nuvi 500 (in my wife's van)

-Garmin Nuvifone G60 (essentially a GPS in my Chevrolet Silverado)

    -Garminfone (mainly my smartphone)

And, yes, the smartphone has the lifetime maps. I just bought lifetime for my wife's Nuvi 500. I am considering lifetime for the Nuvifone G60. As you pointed out, the economics make it a tough choice. I really do like having the prepaid T-Mobile SIM card in it, though, that gives me Yellow Pages.com. Although, given that the Garmin Nuvi 1860 and 1695 are quite reasonable now, I might me tempted by one of those. I think they will still cost more per month for the limited connectivity, however.

If the G60 is unlocked and in decent shape (with window mount etc) you could ebay it for close to $100 and then get another Garminfone. Just make sure to get one with the Garminfone window mount etc.

My old Nuvi 650 finally died (I killed it replacing its battery) so I am down to 1 device: A50 Garminfone. Without data I can't get traffic updates over the air, but I can run the traffic program via WiFi @ home before I leave.

Re: G60 .update file. I used to have it, but deleted it after I bought my A50. Have you tried At&t or Garmin support? One of them must have it. if not, perhaps Asus would. http://support.asus.com/download.asp...vQcopE4TcO2UO5 is the download page, which I am sure you've seen before. Where all 3 .update files are for Asian providers.

Most of Europe seems to be using this one for the G60: http://www.garminasus.com/software/g...antic_6073.zip

But the original AT&T version has vanished online. Is it in the G60 in the Garmin/Update folder on the phone?

That is very tempting. I just might do that. Or, on the other hand, I have also considered a used Motorola Droid, buying the OEM Motorola windshield mount, and adding Co-Pilot on it. I have an ulterior motive, of course. By going that route, I would still have GPS, PLUS a CDMA phone on the Verizon network when I buy a small amount of time through Page Plus Cellular. I figure that way, by having a phone on GSM (T-Mobile) AND one on CDMA (Verizon) I should have a better chance of having at least some coverage in most places in the US!

I just picked up another A50 on ebay for $60. They say it won't read SIM cards, which I believe was a problem with the 1st batch of 1.6 android phones released. There was a patch for it if I rememeber right. The phone still has the stickers on it, possibly brand new. I'll flash it to 2.1 T-Mo version to see if it fixes it, otherwise I have a parts phone.

I flashed the latest 2.1 update over the original 1.6 version and it works just fine.

The price was right. I think the person used it as a GPS for a little while.

Next up is unlocking, it shows 1 more attempt before hard lock. The new code I ordered had better work...the 1st time. Unless I can figure out how to reset the counter on that.

Anyone with a cache of the last AT&T firmware update?

Garmin is balking, saying it's an AT&T problem, and I'm not looking forward to talking with AT&T support since I bought this off ebay since I already had a Nuvi 295w and could use the charge/mount.

I also wonder, given the fact that the hardware between the G60 and the A50 is the same, except for the capacitive screen, whether Asus could do an android version for the g60.

    Ben

I found that when I set my wifi up on my G60, and connect it to USB to keep it active, I can ssh into my G60 using unpriv/unpriv.

I'm in the process of trying to setup a build environment to build a working binary I can scp to the phone....

AT&T Garmin Nuvifone G60 - One Year Contract?

I just received a new battery for my Garminfone for free from Garmin today. I am just curious if anybody here has ever been able to receive a replacement Garmin Nuvifone battery for free under warranty replacement? My Nuvifone battery doesn't hold a charge as well as it once did, so I should probably give some thought to a replacement.

AT&T Garmin Nuvifone G60 - One Year Contract?

I was snooping around at www.asus.com and they still list the G60 on there. They do show a Firmware Download Version V2.52, so when my son returns home with the vehicle that has the G60, I want to see if that is the version I have.
