The one from Tigerdirect doesn't have UMA. And why would you think its being discontinued? The phone was just released in Black and the Lavender one is just coming out...

Okay so what do u guys think about the 8520 that the Tigerdirect is selling. Would it work on a Rogers Network..............I have never had a Blackberry device before, I'm using Nokia e71 which i think is an awesome phone, but was planning to buy the 8520 for travelling purposes, and $329 seems pretty reasonable. Would u guys advice me to get this one before I can go and jump into a more higher models of blackberry like the Bold or the 9700......thanks
The main issue with the Tigerdirect one is that it lacks UMA. Yes, the Tigerdirect one is cheaper, but UMA is worth the extra money for most people. Having UMA is one of the phones strong points...
Well I was just wondering what exactly is UMA, and how does it benefit the user. Like I said I'm using the Nokia e71 from rogers, just wanted to know if my phone does have it and if I knew what it was then I may end up finding use for it...............I will be using the 8520 in Africa, so I just want to know if it would make a difference having a phone with or without it. U do have to take into consideration that Africa has yet to be as advaced as we are, so maybe buying the one from tigerdirect will be good enough......Thanks
UMA allows you to make calls over your home WiFi connection instead of using up your wireless plan minutes.
Rogers calls it "TalkSpot" - it's an add-on which gives you unlimited local calling over WiFi. Even if you initiate the call on WiFi and leave the range of your WiFi connection, the call is still not taken from your minutes. It's kind of like turning your cell phone into a home phone while you are at home. There is even an option to pay more per month to make it unlimited national calling.
You need to purchase a Rogers-branded 8520 for it to work with Rogers Talkspot. The same with any other carrier that offers this feature.
so in order to make full use of your UMA, means that u have to pay more. But if someone has unlimited evenings and weekends, i don't see why one needs to pay more or use UMA. Because from what i understand u can only use it while u're at home rite. What if u are anywhere, and use wifi on the daytime, can u make calls that won't affect your daytime minutes. Because if u can't than it doesn't make sense, because thats when i'm not home and that is in the daytime, so i cant see the reason for adding TALKSPOT...........just another way for ROBBERS to make money.....................unless I'm missing something here..............Thanks.....

Well I have never used talkspot before and for me I don't see if I will ever use it, but I am curious of how much Rogers charges for it if anyone knows. Also I am eligible for a hardware upgrage as of now, and was just wondering if i would be able to get the 8520 without a data plan, then I'm looking at saving more than $200..........................Thanks..............
