The earlier ATT 3G Samsung phones like the Sync, blackjack, blackjack 2 have a field test mode by dialing *#0011# which will tell if you are on 850 or 1900 3G. I would recommend trying out a display unit Samsung 3G phone ay your local ATT corporate store.

I don't know of a 850/1900 map but on this map you see the 3G cities in detail.

    http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/#?type=voice

The only way is asking around to people in different cities, when you ask AT&T enmployees they don't even understand the question.

    New York City = 1900
    Miami = 850

    Anybody else?

Yes and no, the maps I saw were not that good, BUT what I found was this that was better for specific spots to start with and another map that was excellent in the same way. In the link pop in your area code and it shows who is using what bands in your area. I will if I get time try to find the other map later. It showed the area and in color who owned what bands. In Virginia most of the north ATT has the 850 bands, but in the southern part of Virginia, Alltel owned 1 and Verizon the other half of the 850 band, so when Verizon bought them, they got it all. So ATT can only transmit on 1900.

http://www.cellularmaps.com/regions/ Click on your area and go from there. This shows who OWNS the license to the frequency which is very important, as if you don't have it now, if they don't own it you never will.

Hmmm, this could be good news for Telus cutomers, below is the spec for a Telus TP2:

    HTC TouchPro 2: Network 3G EVDO Rev A (800/1900 MHz), UMTS/HSPA (2100 MHz), GSM/ EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)

If I read this right the HD2 we are talking about would have the correct bands, right?

If HTC makes it Telus could possibly bring it here.

I am pretty sure TELUS uses UMTS/HSPA in 850 + 1900 same as ATT, not 2100.

From what I see Telus was building up a UMTS network and it was to go live this month. The bands they will use are 850/1900 exactly like ATT does for UMTS. Coverage, and availability and if they turned it up are the questions to ask.

Thanks for this. I ran across an older one in the AT&T 3G expansion thread, but this one looks a lot more comprehensive.

I may be wrong, but the Touch Pro 2 maybe running on TELUS evdo network like Verizon here in the US? I am using the Telus Hero here in the US with ATT and it has only 850 and 1900

Well I don't have the TP2 only the TP, and from the specs on the Telus page it would seem that the TP2 is capable of UMTS 2100MHz, 3G 1900MHz and EDGE 850MHz...

It would be strange that Telus would quote those specs if they didn't need or support those frequencies, but hey this only what I see on the site.

And of course this is not to say that an HD2 will even be brought in by Telus with these frequencies (I am only hoping!)

As for asking Telus or their agents, they just look at you with a blank stare and say " all I know is the phones we have work on our network" I think I read elsewhere in this thread that most of the time the customer reps don't know what is available or comming until it hits their desk or arrives in a store...

Hi there, out of curiosity, is your Touch Pro sold by Telus? Does it have a sim card? Thanks. I think the TP 2 supports UMTS/HSPA 2100 for roaming in Europe/Asia with a sim card like the Verizon version.

Yes, my Touch Pro is sold by Telus, no SIM card though, when I got mine a year ago when I don't think Telus was even using SIM cards (I could be mistaken though).

And you are correct the TP2 does come with a SIM card: "International roaming SIM card". So are you implying that it can only use UMTS/HSPA 2100 for roaming in Europe/Asia? In other words that frequency is not used by Telus here?

I am afraid so, so the Telstra HD2 would work on Telus' 850 only. San Francisco area used to be 1900 only up to late last year, now its both 850 and 1900, but mainly in 1900. Not sure about Telus in Canada, I have heard its mostly 850

You could also try the maps here: http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml

They break down AT&T's coverage by frequency. I hope that helps. It is helping me lean towards getting the Australian version of the phone.

    EDIT:
upon further review it might not be as useful as I thought. It seems they split the maps by frequency for voice(GSM) but not for data.

Sorry, looking at the TP2 specs won't help in this situation.

TP2 only uses EVDO on 800/1900 MHz. So although the frequencies are right, the technology is all wrong for the current HD2. Telstra should work on UMTS/HSPA 850 Mhz which Telus does have.

Although TP2 has HSPA 2100, that is only for use for roaming in europe/asia, Telus network doesn't actually use that frequency.

The quadband GSM/Edge is also useless on the TP2 with Telus as they don't have a GSM network on any frequency. It's 3G or bust on their network.
