From the few business channel folks I've spoken with, the current iteration is being pulled. The 6.5 version replacement has a better LCD (current gen ones have dead/lit pixel issues) and well, 6.5. Verizon has no way to OTA update WinMo (the update is 80 some MB...larger than the 25MB Verizon OTA limit) so rather than selling 6.1 devices and telling people how to update, they're just gonna sell it with 6.5. The TP2 will re-release around Thanksgiving methinks...the latest Christmas.

And like any consumer I am flip-flopping my way back and forth so much before the release of either that it's a happy little obsession.
The thing is, there are no videos of this device at all and I've never used android. The research I've done so far though says well I'll probably have to root it, which I only have a half understanding of because people only want to half explain it. This device has better hardware to run the OS, but on the same token, it has better hardware for the OS to support. Sure, Android is newer and fresher than RIM's dated OS but on that same token again, It's only recently showing up on other devices and I would dare say it's still in the refining stages and not yet in the improving stages.
My point is, I don't think I trust it.
So again, I am between this and the stale OS, get it because it functions for communications and I know it will still work if i drop it or do I really need a huge screen and awesome camera or something that I can drain my battery with games on yeah I'm trying to make it sound uncool but I will regret not getting it if I don't.
I've noticed not very many people at all in this thread currently using BB's (on that lil list beside their profile pic) so can anyone elaborate why this is ballpark is better than that ballpark?
Without using the words "business user" or "consumer" because those words mean nothing to me.

Here is the break down the way I see it... neather is better then the other... it all depends on what you are looking for. If your bussiness has a BEZ or you know alot of people with blackberrys and can make user of Blackberry Messenger then you'll like a blackberry better. If you want apps (more and cheaper then BB) and games, a better camera etc then android would suit you a little better. If you just want a phone that can make calls. get your pop or imap email let you surf the web, im and text.. then eather (or winmo) for that reason will work for you. It just becomes a matter of personal perf. I don't recall anyone in this thread or on the BB side saying one is over all beter then the other. Its all in how we use our phones. Speaking for myself. I use alot of google services (gmail, docs, maps, googletalk, googlevoice, calender etc). Yes there are BB apps for most.. and I have them but android offers beter intergration (not a suprize) There are also several apps I have uses for. So for me android offers a better solution then blackberry. I'm not saying its better or its worse.. its just more to my way of doing.
My wife is giving me an STD for Christmas.. and I couldn't be happier

Yeah, the Blackberry OS is nice and is more business oriented. The push email makes you get your messages instantly, the BBM allows inter-BB communication, there tend to be a lot of business related apps, the phone/OS is very professional looking, etc. At the same time, many BBs have lower cameras, smaller resolution screens, less-fun apps, etc.

All in all, I agree with the post a couple posts above mine, it comes down to person preference. All the operating systems have evolved to a point where all of them do the essentials so you need to get more specific. Business oriented tends to work on the BB best, app and fun oriented tend to lean towards the iPhone or Android. WinMo devices tend to be in the middle somewhere. But any of them can probably do what you want, it just depends which one does it the way you like.
    There's a map for that...

You can order the phone at a brick and mortor store (Verizon corporate retail only--this includes kiosks, support/repair centers, etc--does NOT include places like Diamond Wireless or another third party carrier) and have it shipped either to the store or to a location of your choosing. You can, within 30 days, return the phone and terminate your contract without any fees (aside from the restock fee).

I know how you feel. Androidandme keeps posting info that is the exact opposite of what bill is saying. I still believe bill but its concerning to see stuff from androidandme saying we won't be getting this phone until Dec 1st or it won't have eclair 2.0.

Also, kind of OT but still surprising, did anyone see that the storm2 will be buy one get one free from vzw? I have never seen a new smartphone be offered as bogo before. Even though I am way more interested in the tao, its still tempting to get the storm2 since both my wife and i are getting phones at the same time.

lol.... I just saw that myself. However I don't know how much I'd read into that coming from someone at Samsung who is not working with 2.0 yet anyways is my guess.

Even at that word has always been 2.0 will not be public or other mfgs use until 2010 anyways.

That's a lot of pics and videos. My guess is late November when we will have accumulated this amount of info, implying an impending launch.
Why is everyone stuck thinking the Sholes has ANYTHING to do with or when the Storm 2 releases?

They are 2 different phones with 2 different purposes and target 2 different groups of people.

A verizon rep could log on and tell me this phone wont be out this month for all i care, i stand by what bill says until the day passes with no phone.

We tend to believe our own guys over anonymous sources. The person in this thread who is saying it has Eclair is a trusted member of this forum.

you don't HAVE to root it. Rooting gives you the full super user ability to install any app or do what have you to the OS rather than just using it as is. Sure you can install apps as is, but rooting gives you the power to lets say put apps on the SD card and run them from there (say you run out of space on the onboard storage if there isn't enough not to mention the apps are about 1kb-1mb of space anyways) you can also put home screens on there and mess with the whole file system. Again you wouldn't just want to do that because you can trash your phone, but reflashing it could fix everything or brick it since flashing does have the probability of going awry. However, if you just want sure functionality for calls and simplicity go with BB. They have always been good phones (except for the Storm and Tour). Also, the 2.0 Eclair on the STD will be a big update for the OS in terms of better functionality and is probably a little refined for speed and use, but the best part is BOTH the BB OS and Android are always upgradable (up to the limit of ROM size on the board). So it really is up to you in terms of what you're looking for. I'm not going to tell you which you should pick over the other as I have no experience with the 9700 or STD, haha.

There are different development groups and branches of the 2.0 Android tree. The main one is the Google branch, which is (I believe) what Moto/Verizon are working on. This can be released today if needed...it's a fully working product (its essentially 1.5 with CDMA and other features from 1.6 and 2.0). This is the private 2.0 tree--only available to Google and it's partners.

The public 2.0 tree is what most other companies use (like iNQ mobile)...this won't be available to the public until it's 100% finished and finalized. 1.6 is already shipping on devices or have already shipped, but the 1.6 code for development is just now being available for others to work with and develop from. You have understand that with something like Android, there is a public and a private sector. Google makes available the private/early code to all of its close partners to develop with so theres an exclusivity with new devices. After X days/weeks/months, the private code is pushed into the public repositories for all to develop with.

I could care less if the STD ships with 1.6 or 2.0

Yes it would be cool to get the newest OS before everyone else, but honestly, 1.6 is cool enough IMO. Plus, the STD is supposedly made to be 2.0 compatible so whenever 2.0 does see the light of day, the STD will be waiting for it.

That said, from what I have seen, bill has given this forum lots of info and it has been reliable info, so I have an expectation of 2.0 and that the phone will be out Oct. 30th. If it ends up different, then so be it.
