    Sprint is moving underground in...

...the Metro in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

Today, Sprint (NYSE: S) announced the availability of Sprint and Nextel service to customers in the 20 busiest underground stations in the Washington, D.C. Metro system. The move promises to improve the workday commute for hundreds of thousands of passengers who depend on Metro to travel between their homes and workplaces each day. It also will make touring the historic sites of the Washington, D.C. area easier for millions of tourists who visit the Capitol area annually.

"By extending Sprint and Nextel wireless coverage to these stations, our
customers who are metro riders will be able to stay in closer touch with the
people important to them," said Matrona Busch, director-Retail Sales for Sprint. "More importantly, this will strengthen the ability of public safety to respond to emergencies when they occur in the Metro system. Sprint is proud to be a part of this team. We look forward to expanding and enhancing our Sprint and Nextel coverage as the remaining phases of the project are complete."

Sprint expects to offer service in the Metro`s remaining underground stations by the fall of 2010. Service should be available in 50 percent of the Metro system`s tunnels by the fall of 2011, with complete coverage expected to be established in all the tunnels by the fall of 2012.

Sprint hasn't given money to the right people yet.

I do think it will happen since Sprint is taking an interest in providing service underground in at least one area of the country.

They were the first ones to install equipment in underground BART stations so it wouldn't surprise me to see Sprint put coverge in some of the BART tunnels.

Yeah sprint already roams there, they have native service now along with ATT and TMobile. I really could have used it last week when I was running late and my friend was waitinf for me at Metro Center. Oh well next time going out to dupont or adams morgan should be more interesting!

Hopefully the native Sprint service will work better than the current roaming situation in DC. Roaming works great in the stations but when the train is moving forget about trying to hold a conversation. The same goes for native Verizon users as well so I guess it's a consequence of the fast moving train. Coupled with the noise on the train it's little wonder that few people actually do any talking while riding the Metro undergound.

It will take a few years but service will be in all the tunnels. After that you may be able to hold a conversations while the train is moving.
