for those who are terminal-noobs, i would just wait for a patch to come out in cydia in 1-2 days.

says for advanced users only. So if you decide to try this and something goes wrong you have been warned.
MuscleNerd has announced a few CommCenter hacks which enable iPhone 2G MMS and iPhone 3G/3GS tethering.
iPhone 2G owners can enable native MMS with a patch by Wh1terat and geniusan. This procedure will modify your CommCenter and as such is quite dangerous. Only advanced users should attempt the steps found here.
iPhone 3G/3GS owners can enable tethering in iPhone 3.1.2 by performing a different CommCenter patch. It's just a 2-byte patch; however, its also recommended for advanced users only. You can learn more about this patch here.
We are still considering whether to post tutorials for these hacks. Eventually they will be made a part of normal PwnageTool flow. Its also likely that someone will post a tool or package to perform these procedures.
We will keep you posted.

This tutorial makes it seem pretty simple...though I haven't grabbed hold of my cajones and given it a try yet myself.
EDIT: I grew a pair, fired up my hex editor and knocked it out. Works like a champ. Interestingly the tethering option showed up immediately and let me turn it on, installed new hardware when I connected it to my PC but then never gave me the new connection in network settings. But a quick reinstall of the mobileconfig from help.benm.at fixed it -- it's working great now!

I thought the iPhone 2G plan didn't allow MMS messaging? I know that I definitely can't use MMS with my 3G on the 2G plan.
some people have MMS working using swirly. (probably with a different plan than 2g data. No idea how but they do). ALso some people use T-mobile (or other countries may not provision like att does).Originally Posted by saado
this hack allows mms to work natively (i.e. no need for swirly) IF you can get MMS through your plan.
nm im dumb.
makes two of us... I'm running Leopard (not Snow Leopard)Originally Posted by coupey

k nm after downloading mobileconfig it works, actually tethering right now.
very sweet especially since im going to be in an airpot for several hours next week, this will save me some money so i dont have to buy their wifi.
yep, so that first link is waaaay too techy for me. and the second link that Saoirse1916 put up looks like its only for mac. so i guess ill wait until someone makes it easy..lol
Can someone clear this up for me...is tethering really gone in 3.1.2? I jailbroke mine yesterday and installed PDA net and it's working fine still. Is this absence of tether concerned with non-jailbroken phones?
Phones I've owned: SE T616, Nokia 5100, Nokia 3390, Motorola V220, Motorola V635, Motorola RIZR Z3, Cingular 8125, Blackberry Pearl, Blackberry Curve, Apple iPhone/3G/3GS, AT&T Tilt, Samsung Blackjack, Samsung Blackjack 2...phew
Well, I unfortunately didn't have a mac so I had to whip out Hex Workshop and do the hex editing manually in Windows. After verifying that the SHA1 checked out ok, I went ahead and copied the patched version of CommCenter into my iPhone and then gave it the permission that was necessary. Voila! I now have native tethering on my 3.1.2 3GS and saved myself $10 from having to buy MyWi. I would put up a Windows tutorial but I'm too lazy to organize one, plus I don't wanna be held responsible for someone effing up their iPhone because their hex edits weren't done properly.
You have tethering because of a 3rd party app. 3 rd party apps like pdanet and mywi enables tethering as well. This hack enables the native tethering of the iphone OS like it was under 3.0.x with the carrier file hack without the need of a 3rd party app.Originally Posted by hibachi
