    Google maps on Droid!

    4. Turn-by-turn directions are available on the Verizon Motorola Droid which features Android 2.0

Verizon worked with Motorola and Google to include a navigation app with their Android phones that is powered by Google Maps.

A source with access to a Droid phone shared their experiences:

There’s an app on the Sholes called Navigation that does exactly that: GPS based turn by turn directions, using the Text to Speech library available in Android 1.6/2.0. It even does the tilted map view similar to most commercial GPS units. I think personally the neatest feature in it is that it ties into the Global Search functionality of the phone, so from the home screen, you can tap the search widget’s “speak” button, say “Directions to San Francisco” and it’ll load, calculate where you are, confirm you want “Directions from here to San Francisco”, and when you say “yes” it goes to it.

This feature was spotted on the Motorola site, before it was quickly taken down.

I'm guessing it will get an address right from the home screens new QSB(voice search that dials also)

I seriously have a tear in my eye from the beauty of this feature.

Long live the droid. In my pocket.

I'll bet they will call this VZ Navigator and charge $10/month for it...

Similar to what Aixelsyd said, Ive heard that this will be one of the first devices jumping onto Verizon under verizons open handset program. According to all the tipsters out there and the people who actually have the device now, there is very very little (if any) indication that the device is verizon at all with the exception of the badge on the outside.

An unlocked GPS chip doesn't prevent them from charging us for the use of any app in which they wish to charge a usage fee. VZNav still has a monthly fee to use whether your GPS is locked or not.

true when talking about something like VZ Nav but that is not what I said tho. the post is about gmaps which is on the device and no monthly fee to use it. The statement I quoted was saying what it has will more then likely have a fee, which is WRONG like I had stated.

And again being the device is a Google Experience device, VZW can not block 3rd party apps/content. So the fact is if the GPS is not locked you will be able to use whatever app you wish for use along with GPS. And yea I'm sure they may have VZ Nav on it if you wanted to pay them monthly which IMO would be pretty silly but to each is to there own.

Of course they can port VZNav to Android and make it available however they choose in the Marketplace, but they can't limit the availability or function of any feature in the OS or application in the Marketplace, as per the Google Experience designation.

I can't tell you how trilled I am about this feature...considering even the regular ol' GPS from Google Maps on the T-Mobile G1 pointed me in the right direction after I got lost in a maze of a neighborhood. YES I got lost in a neighborhood....see why I'm so thrilled? hahaha.

    According to http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10384994-266.html

"And the phone does not have Verizon's VZ Navigator, since it comes bundled with the Google Android navigation.

The good news is that some of the services, such as navigation that Verizon charges for on devices running VZNavigator, will be free to users of the Droid."

Ah, $35.00 bucks will get you Co-Pilot.

Btw, I found out how you get your apps back when getting a new Android. They stay with the Google account under backup!
