Google doesn't make any money directly from Android so they don't have as much incentive as people think for making it Android only not to mention the iPhone has a much larger install base.
Google has said: "Apple is a close partner. Millions of users experience Google Maps on the iPhone. We will continue to work with Apple to bring innovation, including Latitude and Navigation, to users but you’ll have to speak to Apple about availability."
Businessweek's article said: "Google didn’t rule out offering the service on the iPhone and said it’s working with Apple but didn’t provide a time frame or any promise that a similar service for the iPhone would be forthcoming. Vic Gundotra, Google’s vice president of engineering for mobile and developer, said the software has “stringent” hardware requirements."
To me it sounds like maybe Google is ready to go and Apple is either dragging their feet or they have a surprise brewing for us.

Someday they'll see the light. Or they won't, either way I don't care. I'll keep shining.
I think development of this project was given a huge resource injection after the recent spat between apple and google.
I hope google take the moral high ground and offer it out on the iphone. I'm an Android user myself these days, and love the platform - but life without iphone would be boring. They have stimulated a huge amount of innovation over the last few years, and even though I don't own one anymore - I wish them all the best.
I applaud Google's move here (providing free voice turn by turn navigation). I hope it proves wildly successful with the Droid and other Android handsets.
It will only force other smartphone manufactures and their respective service providers to follow suit.
Google on Wednesday revealed a free online navigation service that will be a part of its forthcoming Android 2.0 mobile operating system. It could also come to the iPhone, the company said, if given the green light by Apple.

Given the greenlight by Apple is a BIG if. Apple has already said no to Google for a Latitude app.
If Apple allows this they will have majore problems with the other turn-by-turn apps in the store. People will demand refunds and those publishers will be livid their functionality is given away for free.
Apple shouldn't be that responsible, but since they hold such tight control over the App store, they will be held responsible for every decision with the iPhone.
I don't know how to think on this one. If it does come to the iPhone it prob won't come until the next version of the iPhone. By that time AT&T will probably make the date or rate plans higher to make up the money they are going to lose from people dropping the AT&T Navigator service. Anything is possible if Verizon is allowing it on the Droid, they used to be as bad as Apple with locking down devices. i'm hoping it comes.
The Maps app in iPhone OS supports turn-by-turn directions, but it doesn't do automatic advance to next step, automatic re-route, spoken voice directions, bird's eye view, and some of the other things Google just added to their navigation service.
I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

1) dsjr2006 had it right... Google isn't making a DIME off the Android phones, its making money (big money) off the searches and data collection. It's in Google's best interest to have ALL their apps on EVERY phone ever, the iPhone's (and iTouch) 40+ million units are too juicy for Google to ignore.
2) No one is getting a refund because a new app is out that is free, you paid $ too bad thats technology for you. There are 4 apps that I paid for that now have free versions or cheaper, I did not cry over it I moved on and actually on 2 use the free one because its better.
Apple Allows App
- Loses money from sales of the expensive arse GPS programs via iTunes
- Downplays Apple's new venture into GPS with their acquisition of PlaceBase
(probably means everyone would rather run Google's amazing turn by turn app rather than Apple's new proprietary GPS unless they can figure out some magical extra feature to top Google)
Apple Denies App
- Sh*tstorm ala Google Voice...
- People migrate to Android for free turn-by-turn
I'd say don't expect to see it as a bundled app with Google Maps anytime soon.
If anything I'd venture a guess that Apple would make it an optional download just because they won't want everyone running a proprietary Google Maps w/ turn-by-turn.
Kinda seems like a lose-lose from Apple's perspective.

I predict Apple will stall on it like they have with Google Voice and in the meantime get a similarly capable app up and running natively on the iphone (OS 4.0?) using their new mapping-service acquisition, Placebase. I think this app will also have Latitude-esque capabilities.
