$45 data plan for exchange access?

PCworld Article: Want a Droid for Work E-mail? It'll Cost You Extra

Is this the same thing that VZW does with their windows mobile phones where you have to go to the $45 plan to use their wireless sync software for exchange access, but if your work allows external access to their exchange servers directly you can use activesync or in this case the equivalent droid app under the $30 plan?

I hope this isn't required. I'm about to switch from AT&T over to Verizon and would hate to pay $45 and would deter me. My school uses Exchange. I've heard it's only for certain accounts. We shall see!

My company has their own Exchange server with ActiveSync turned on. Would I still need to pay for the higher data plan? How would a provider know if I am connecting to ActiveSync?

fyi the higher fee is to sync with VZW servers for the email address you get threw them. Has nothing to do with using your own exchange server as far as I'm aware of. I have many friends who use the $30/month data plan and hook up ot there own Exchange server.

I (and many others here) use Exchange servers with the $30 data plan. It's all you need.

Ditto. And as someone who runs Exchange servers, I can tell you that all Outlook Mobile Access (the server component of ActiveSync) traffic runs over standard web port 443. I don't know how VZ could discriminate ActiveSync traffic from you checking your bank balance or buying books at Amazon. Other than the fact that it pings the server every couple of minutes.

Don't let the reps talk you into it too. I won't even talk my customer into it. You don't need to pay 44.99 for something that can be done on the 29.99 data plan.
v Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).

Speed Test with my Motorola Droid in Birmingham, AL. Droid Does (and so Does Verizon).^

Speed Test with DSL internet with AT&T(Bellsouth). Horrible.

    THAT ARTICLE IS A LIE!

Verizon is beyond crappy in explaining what the $44.99 plan actually is. All it adds from the $29.99 plan is Wireless Sync. A program most Verizon customers have no use for and even if you did, there are free solutions on the internet. Exchange works perfectly fine on the $29.99 plan.
