What will Verizon do if the problem cannot be fixed with software but is a hardware problem?

Well, I'm a 41/09 and my phone seems to work well except for the camera. I just got it today and haven't had any problem with reboots, etc. But the camera has a lot of trouble focusing. Red corners almost all the time. and the clicks it makes when I start the camera are the same clicks it makes when pressing the camera button halfway to focus. I'll try it outdoor in bright sunlight tomorrow to see how it goes.

And for those who say they get red corners but the pictures are ok, it might just be luck. Cameras usually have a range that's in focus for any given shot (depth of field). So even if the precise focus point is at say 6 feet, the range where things might be in acceptable focus could be from somewhere ahead of that to somewhere in back of that.

I certainly hope it can be fixed in software. If I'm not having reboot issues and no battery issues, then I'd hate to take this one back and end up with other problems I didn't have before.

I just came accross this post on the motorola forums, and it works for my camera. I get focused pics now!

So I got my camera to start focusing and take quicker pictures by changing the settings. Before doing this I would either always get the red bars or no picture at all....when it did take a picture there would be a lag. I also noticed the sound went away, and the scanning apps started working a hell of alot better.



Maybe some of you can confirm if you see better performance after these steps:

1. Open Camera App

2. Click the left side of screen to slide options, or open it from the menu button.

3. Go to scene mode and change it to something else like Action (anything but portrait).

4. Take a picture...you will notice there is no focus bars on the corner, it will just snap pics. Take one picture at least

5. Click on top right to view the picture then click done.

6. Take another picture you will notice you now get the focus bars and they turn green.



All picture are now in focus. If you want to change back to auto you can but it will only hold for as long as you are still in the camera app. Otherwise keep your camera in a setting like action and you will have focussed pictures. All pictures for me focus correctly now, and I can also scan barcodes using apps like shopsavvy with a success rate I did not enjoy before.



Hope this helps some of you.

Also hope they get the software patch out sooner than later.

Oddly enough it worked for me to an extent as well. Action mode turns off auto focus and forces infinity mode, but the camera would give me green borders. after switching back to auto I seemed to be still stuck in infinity mode (silhouette of a mountain on screen) I exited the camera app, and restarted and it was still there in auto mode. then I toggled auto flash on then off and the silhouette disappeared, so I was back in auto focus mode. The next few tries were quite successful. This tells me that it is likely that this is related to a bug or five in the camera app. Lets hope that they are resolved in the december update.

I got an update from Shop Savvy earlier today....per the update notes they added support for the Moto Droid. Works great now.

When pressing the shutter button, you can hear that it's not using the autofocus any longer.
When changing back to Autofocus, it is still using the Infinity, as the "mountain" icon is on the screen.
Once you exit the camera and go back to it, you end up with the autofocus problem anyway.

So in fact, there is nothing different here than just setting the focus to Infinity to begin with (which turns off the autofocus).

Makes sense. I just saw that post and it seemed to help my phone take pics w/o focus sounding like it was bugging out.

We all now know that most of our cameras have major issues. My phone's camera does not focus well at all. So my question is: What if the December 11 update does not remedy the problem? We will all be over our 30 day return period and stuck with non-working phones. I find it bizarre that if they know what the fix is that they do not deliver us a fix while we are still in our 30 days.

You know that both Verizon and Motorola are not going to bend on the 30 day return policy.

Any thoughts?

What took me a little time to get used to was the fact that when you pressed the shutter button, it did not take the picture no matter how long you had the shutter button pressed until you released the button. Taking your finger off the button actually made the camera take the picture. This can also affect the sharpness of the photo if your hand moves a bit when you are lifting your finger off the shutter button.

Also, when you press the shutter button to initiate the focusing, regardless of whether you get red or green focus marks, once you get the focusing marks and the camera beeps, the focus is locked in and stays locked in until you take the picture (lift your finger off the shutter button). So if the focus is selected and then either the subject moves or you move the camera, this will affect the focusing as the focus point was locked in and you can't readjust the focus without the picture being taken.

Finally, why didn't they incorporate image stabilization into the camera? For a cell phone camera, image stabilization would be a huge help.

With the camera not being able to focus, it was PITA ( pain in the a$$) to use the scanner function of the program. With the camera work around to get it to focus better, the scanning portion works much better.
