I've finally updated to the latest candidate release for the next update, and I can tell you that your camera concerns should (most all) be relieved. Camera focuses like a champ, and the bar code scanner is so quick to pick up the bar codes that I don't even get a chance to "center" them now. I'll leave the picture quality comparisons to you experts, but I've noticed a vast improvement! And this is on the same phone... again, this is most definitely not a HW issue.
He said the current internal build is ESD43, so who know what number it will be once the final one comes out in Dec.
But since they are calling it "release candidate" they will most likely focus on a build and make sure that one is stable for release.
There may be a few RCs before the final one.
Clicking is not loud and autofocus gives green corners most of the time. ShopSaavy has problems trying to focus on Bar Codes and is successful only about 50% of the time
Mine has been doing pretty well focusing. I have a 39/09 phone. I just did some testing of it in my basement, very low light right now, most of the time I don't see anything but black in the view finder and it focused 9/10 times with no issues, very fast. Picture quality is something to hope for, but most of its optics and not the camera itself.
Here's a sample of a macro I just took. Phone was less than 4 inches to subject.
I've only had green corners two times, maybe three. The rest of the time I have red corners and soft focus. My camera makes 3 clicks when starting but it's really soft and the other camera sounds are extremely soft. I would not call the noises unusual or troubling for a tiny mechanical system.
Shop savvy mostly is able to lock onto the bar codes but it does do a ton of focus attempts. It's only not worked at all once (on a household item I have scanned before).
What I don't understand is, if it is in fact a software issue, why are some of the phones working right? All of our phones have the same software correct? I would think that they would either all work right or all not. It doesn't make since that some focus and some don't with the same software.
I believe it is a hardware issue, but they will be able tweak the software to work around it.
Hey guys I recently went to verizon to get a replacement for my phone (bad autofocus and the WiFi was stalling requiring a restart of the phone).
So far the difference is amazing!! My camera's auto-focus works sooo much better and I get green corners more than ever. Also the phone works with the flash much better!! And so far my wifi is working great!!
The strange thing is however the Hardware dates are the same (39/09). So I really don't know what the deal is. I feel like my replacement is so much better in terms of camera handling than my first phone.
I had the problem with my first Droid with the camera. Pretty much never got green corners. I just exchanged it today, and the camera seems to work wonderfully, even in low light situations.
My old Hardware date was 40/09, the new one is 41/09. I'm still not sure as to what exactly is the problem, since other people here with 41/09 are still having the problem.
Also, I may just be imagining things, but the sound of the lens seems to be a little quieter and less "clicky," more "smooth."....call me crazy...
