LG BL40 New Chocolate, Smart phone or not?

I was calling into L&R to ask about a new rate plan blah blah blah and wasnt given anything particular intresting.

Though the rep did mention that the new LG Choclate is a non smart phone, and therefore he would be able to give me one of the packages ("Package 15") which would include web browsing.

I see it listed under the "Smart phone" category though and im not sure if the web browsing would work and be counted as a regular phone and not a "smart phone data package".

Has anyone at all gotten this phone? All i hear about is the Hero and Iphone, but im not willing to pay that much for a data plan for either phone. The chocolate may be a viable option if i can get the web browsing at a resonable price.

Is this a smart phone or not?

Cheapo version of a smart phone. All you want to know about it can be found by doing a youtube search for a review of any phone your thinking of getting to see the differences. You get what you pay for, i've had an iphone since they originally came out a few years ago and haven't had a single urge to buy another phone since (other than the newer versions) for what its worth.

I think he's asking whether he would need a data plan for this phone. As it stands, Telus has unlimited web browser for non smart phones for very cheap (7 bucks?)

Regardless of the classification of BL-40. Package 20 is where browsing is included. Package 15 does not have web.

confusing that the rep told you that. right on the website it is listed under smartphones, and for 99 bucks on a 3year, with this "‡" next to it:

‡ Available until December 31, 2009, for clients (new activations) who activate on a 3 year term with a Smartphone voice and data rate plan of $50 or greater. TELUS reserves the right to modify eligible rate plans with this offer at any time without advance notice

I dont care what Telus calls it, if this is a smart phone I don't know the difference between a smartphone and a feature phone anymore

Best Buy puts it in the non-smartphone category...

    Should be a smartphone.
Anyphone that has some sort of exchange support, handles emails will be considered a smartphone.

Funny they told me it was a smartphone, last week. They should make up their mind.

This is just going to get worst (or better depending on how you look at it) as dumb phones get smarter. Eventually we'll have one tier of data plans.

Right now, I'd say it's not a full smartphone and should qualify for the WAP browsing feature. Smartphone to me means it's running a smartphone OS like WM, BB, S60, Android, etc. Not a propriety OS created by the manufacturer for the specific model.

Actually yah, my post was more of a two parter

    -Is it a smart phone
-Can i get unlimited browsing on it

So yes, i was speaking to a rep and he said that this was a viable option for me as i can just throw on the extra web browsing.

And i was confused as on the site it lists it under smart phones, and based on what i was reading on other reviews about it its not classified as a smart phone (i dont know the diffrence really but what you said sounds accurate).

If this is a non smart phone and i can add on unlimited web browsing this could be quite a viable option for a lot of people that just want to browse the web.

I see that there is still some debate about this phone though,.....

When I picked up my E71 the other day I asked, they said they havent sold a single one. Its a very nice looking phone. And feels very solid. Its just going to be hard to sell a phone like this. If they had more apps available for it and an apps store it would be an easier sale. Yes you can install java apps, but the big thing right now in cellphones seems to be app stores. People want an easy way to find and install apps. And its priced the same as the Hero. Would have been interesting if it had android on it. I think LG should be looking at going that way instead of using their own OS cause I really dont see many apps coming for it. Maybe they should work with Samsung on their new OS?

Questions seems to be combined to me, if it's a smartphone then you have to get a smartphone data plan, if it's a dumb phone then you can get the WAP unlimited browsing plan for regular phones.
