Curious if anyone else has noticed this glitch? When using the phone to make a call in dark confines... the screen continually toggles on and off while on a call... won't stay on even long enough to hit the speaker button.... if I am in a dark room or out at night I have to angle the phone towards a source of light for the screen to come on and be active...... becoming increasingly more annoying just to end a call or toggle the speaker button.....
Yes, I had the same problem. It seemed as though the screen was frozen. I wound up powering off and restarting. I wasn't sure at the time what caused this to happen but I was finishing a call and trying to hang up in a low light environment.
Hmmm never thought about that! Theres a light sensor that senses when its near your ear... lol someone had an big time oversight on that one! Guess they're going to need to use accelerometers to know from now on!
Yeah there is a light sensor for automatic screen brightness, etc. When you have the phone to your ear it senses that it's dark and turns the screen off immediately, and when you pull it away it turns back on. I haven't thought about using it in the dark, but haven't noticed that happening to me yet. But I am sure that is what is going on.
I believe it to be a problem with the proximity sensor. If i wave my hand about 3 inches above the screen in semi dark conditions the screen will flash off and on.....
I had this problem 2 days after my first droid, it happened right as i was pulling into the verizon parking lot (was originally going to get them to swap my contacts over from the Dare). So i was able to walk in there and show them the black screen and that it wouldnt come back on no matter what. Only thing it could be is Prximity Sensor. Only time it would happen was when i was on a call and after i would pull it from my face, the screen just stayed black.
They replaced my first droid with a new one (no refurb as they didnt have any yet). Havent had the problem with this 2nd one.
To the right of the earpiece is the light sensor. It is a visible circle.
To the left of the earpiece is the proximity sensor. It is not visible.
The issue you guys are experiencing is probably due to your finger or hand being near the proximity sensor (top left). The sensor is quite sensitive. Resting your thumb on the top left SIDE of the phone is close enough to trip the proximity sensor and cause the screen to go black. If your screen is flashing on and off it's because your finger/hand is moving in and out of range with the proximity sensor.
Don't wrap your hand around the top of the phone and don't rest your finger near the top left corner while in a call and you won't have a problem.
