Guide to Connecting the VX8575 to Your PC

Some folks have been pm'ing me about getting media onto their new Verizon Chocolate Touch. So I've given up answering these messages and figured a guide will take less time... So here it is:

Before you connect your phone to your PC
, download and install this driver http://lg-usb-modem-driver.software..../4.9/download/

Note to Mac users: I haven't tried to connect this phone to a Mac yet, but it appears that the env Touch just automatically connects to the Mac, no drivers needed. I suspect that this is the case with the Chocolate Touch as well

    Method 1:
The easiest way to transfer things like ringtones, videos, music, and pictures/wallpapers is to have a microsd card.
Prerequisites: MicroSD Card, either a usb-B data cable (should have been provided to you by LG) or a microsd card reader.
    1. Insert the card in the slot behind the phone
    2. Go to settings>memory>Format Card, enter your phone lock code (default is the last 4 digits of your phone number)
    3. After the formatting is done, plug your phone to the pc with the provide usb-B cable, then put your phone into usb mass storage mode by going to your tools>USB Mass Storage. The alternative method is to take the card out of the phone and plug it into your PC through some sort of micro sd card reader.
    4. Open up the drive and drag your music/videos/ringtones/pictures into the my_music/my_flix/my_ringtones/my_pix folders, respectively.

Note: There are a few alternate ways to upload a ringtone.
    1. Email the mp3 file to your phone by attaching it to a message and sending it to "yournumber@vzwpix.com". Open your text message, select the attachment, and save as a ringtone.
    OR you can
    2. Go to your music & tones>My Sounds folder, then select the file you want as your ringtone and select set as>ringtone. You can only use whatever mp3 you upload to my_sounds as a universal ringtone, which means no personalized ringtones for each contact.

    Method 2:
Bitpim is the other way to transfer things, but it's a powerful piece of software, so think before you act whenever you use it. Also, it's a relatively slow and buggy way to transfer files, so try method 1 first:

Download bitpim 1.0.7 beta and install it
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitp...p.exe/download

    1. Set up your phone so that it is in modem mode when it connects with your PC (Settings>USB Auto Detection>Modem Mode)
    2. Don't connect your phone to your PC yet, open up bitpim and you check the "Detect phone at bitpim startup" box.
    3. Click view>view filesystem, there should now be a tab on the left to view the phone's filesystem. Close and reopen Bitpim.
    4. Connect your phone to your PC. Bitpim should have detected an "Other CDMA Phone on COMx".
    5. Go to settings and change you phone type to "LG VX11000 (env Touch)"
    6. click filesystem and browse away!

Most of the important and multimedia files on the chocolate touch are located in /BREW>mod>"some sort of random 4/5/6 character number". I'm not sure if the numbering system is the same for all phones, but here's a list of notable folders and what they contain:

    /BREW>mod>10888-Your pictures from internal memory.
/BREW>mod>10889>ringtones-default ringtones, possible to upload your own rings to this folder.
/BREW>mod>10890-folder for video files (will play .3gp and mp4 h.264 files)
/BREW>mod>12513-files that are vital to the music player's function, I wouldn't touch these
/BREW>mod>18067-My_Sounds folder in the internal memory
/BREW>mod>19919-files vital to vz navigator and mobile email, I wouldn't touch these
/BREW>mod>19920-current universal ringtone that you are using
    /BREW>mod>21568-Fonts for the phone
/BREW>mod>262266-files vital to songid, rhapsody music service, and music player functions, I wouldn't touch these.
/BREW>mod>272787-cityid files, the program that displays incoming call locations
/BREW>mod>4972-files vital to text messaging, mobileim, and email. I wouldn't touch these.
/BREW>mod>brewappmanager-folder for downloaded apps and menu files
/BREW>mod>polaris6-files vital to the web browser, I wouldn't touch this.

    Other notable folders:
/flash>ui- folder containing files for eztip calc, calc, world clock, clock/charging screen wallpapers, etc. Look in the env touch forums on how to replace many of these flash apps with something else, like games.
/MMC1-this is your memory card, since it's uploads and downloads files so slowly, it's pretty pointless to use bitpim to access your card memory...
/mVoice>dict- Not sure, but this might be the phone's data for Voice commands (if you choose to calibrate your phone with your voice).
/t9udb-contains the file for the phone's t9 dictionary.

    Method 3:
The last way to sync media with your phone is through Verizon Rhapsody. Other music syncing software (like Songbird) seem to have trouble correctly uploading id3 tags. This method only manages music, the picture upload functionality for the program does not work with the phone.
    1. Make sure your phone is on Music Sync mode (settings>usb auto detection>Media Sync Mode
    2. Download Vcast Rhapsody here: http://www.real.com/offer/vcast/download/vzwwebfree?
    3. Install the program and plug in your phone.
    4. Once the phone has been detected by your pc and all drivers installed for it, open up Vcast Rhapsody.
    5. Import any music you have by dragging it into the Rhapsody "My Library".
    6. Drag and drop any music you have into your phone, which should have appeared right below "Burn a CD".

I hope this has been a clear little guide to syncing media with your new vx8575!

If i could add a lil to your guide. Using method 1 create a folder called my_ringtones and add your mp3 ringtones there. The phone should recognize them in your ringtone list. Also instead of taking your card out of your phone, using the data cable connect to the PC by USB MASS Storage and drag and drop your media into the correct folders.

I just got the lg chocolate touch and connected with bitpim and was able to move ring tones but after restarting phone the new ring tones are not on the list. Any help?

You need to transfer the new ringtones to the Sounds folder, not the ringtones. Go figure. I got mine to show up by sending the new ringtones to the same folder as the MIDI's that came with the phone (don't remember the name; some random numbers). To use them, go to Media Center -> Music and Tones -> My Sounds. Select the sound, and Set As Ringtone.

I'm having the same problem as l8mail with ringtones. I can put them in the my_sounds folder, but they don't show up in the list of available tones on the phone.

I'm OK using BitPim (I've used it on 2-3 previous phones), but I want to make sure I get it right up front so I don't brick my new phone. What version of BitPim are you guys using? I just installed 1.06 official, and there is no option for "LG VX11000 (env Touch)" in the phone options. There is a 1.07 test version, but I don't know if I should be using a "test" version on my new phone. Also, I removed my old LG driver and installed 4.9.4.

I went ahead and installed BitPim 1.07 and found the VX-11000 setting. It doesn't read contact info correctly, but it seems to have read the pics, sounds, and music.

It's been a long time since I used BitPim, so can someone tell me, is it normal that after doing a "Get Phone Data" the filesize on all my files show as 0KB?

Using a micro-sd card, data cable, and the USB Mass Storage device, drag and drop all the ringtones into a folder called my_ringtones. Works 100% of the time for me. All ringtones show up on the phone under ringtone menu.

    Vx11000

I am running bitpim 1.0.7 and I don't see VX11000 as an option. I also have a mac. ideas? I tried the other "Chocolate" settings and none of those connect either.

    Thanks.

I'm on Windows and had to install the latest beta version to get the VX11000 settings. But now that I've got the "USB Mass Storage" option on the phone figured out, there's no need for BitPim anyway if you're just trying to transfer music, images, videos, or ringtones.

GREAT THREAD. so happy to have found this. THANKS for your hard work.

i tried this, and these were my results:

first, on only one of my 3 computers did i get the "usb drive" type access to work. On that 1 computer, i was able to dl mp3s to the phone, then play them on the phone. I was not able to upload pictures or do anything with ringtones.

I did have to set the usb detection as stated in the OP like the following to get it to work: Settings>USB Auto Detection>Modem Mode
(actually i have it on "ask on plug" mode and i hit "data", not music, when that pops up)

BitPim did not work at first. i DID INDEED need to download that driver.

BUT the 4.9 version gave me this error on the website (12/5/2009):

It is possible that our download links do not refer to the intended version 4.9. You may try using the link for LG USB Modem driver 4.8 or searching for a download link using Google.
the 4.8 driver referred to in the message was a link to http://lg-usb-modem-driver.software..../4.8/download/ and that's what i used. this worked for me, BitPim automatically detected the phone.

This is version 1.0.7.20091103-Test of BitPim.

BitPim was able to upload data from the phone.

However, the whole reason i did this was to get pictures to upload from my phone to my pc.

i could not get that to work.

the 'media' folder tree was empty for me.

Indeed, the BipPim help for the "LG VX-11000" says:

    What works
Phonebook, wallpaper, ringers, calendar, memo, call history, SMS, and file system.
notice that this does not include pictures.

If the pictures are somewhere in the file system, i cannot find them. ("media" is under "phone" and both "phone" and "filesystem" are top-level folders. This confused me at first, as "filesystem" is at the bottom, and i missed it the first few times i tried to use BitPim. I thot the phone folder tree was the filesystem, but it's not. filesystem is its own tree :)

has anybody else got pictures to upload from their lg chocoloate touch vx8575 to their pc?

the full string is "LG-VX11000 (enV Touch)" ie it starts with an 'L' not a 'V' so it might be somewhere else in the list than where you're looking, maybe?

ps. If a mod is reading this, is it possible to merge this reply to the op?

    my phone has same numbers

i should say that in BitPim Edit->Settings i checked on "Block writing anything to the phone" because of your warning about the "powerfulness" of this program.

knowledge is power, and power is dangerous ;)

also, fyi, my "brew" is lowercase. i doubt that matters.

    i can confirm these:

    brew/mod/10888 my pictures, .jpg files
    brew/mod/10889/ringtones/default ringtowns, .mp3
brew/mod/10890 my videos, but these are .3g2 files (in the lg chocolate touch). i hope vlc can play these.
brew/mod/18067 contents of my sounds folder (just the 5 default ones), .mid files (can .mp3 go here?)
brew/mod/19920 empty for me, but since i dont know exactly what a universal ringtone is, perhaps i have not set this yet

i didnt check any others. so, seems like the same numbering scheme.

once again, THANKS for your help!
