Early this month I got a Panasonic 830p brand new in box. When I first got it I tried a hypersim I already had (I-SmartSIM) and it said insert USIM. I was not surprised this sim hack did not work as it only seems to work with a crappy Euro Toshiba I bought as a pay as you go phone on holiday.
I bought a i-smartphone 2009 sim hack from a seller and tried it and it worked, it said Cingular and not insert USIM.
The media functions (camera, ring tones etc) are locked down and there is a box asking me if I want to reprovision each time I go into the menu but I know the phone was media locked and I can deal with that repro box (I push no) and since I only make calls and text (SMS and not MMS) the phoen is fine with me that way.(I have both an iPhone and iPod I can use to hear music and watch movies)
Here is a few questions.
1. The little roaming triangle shows up on the phone near the signal bars. Prior to starting to use it I went in and selected GSM only from the menu. Now is this phone really roaming off my carrier(which could cause me trouble with AT&T) or is it just because I switched it to GSM only and the phone knows that there is no GSM in Japan so it automatically switches on the roaming triangle?
2. Phone numbers: I selected the option to copy all my phone numbers onto the phone and it did so. I then call my phone from my land line and the the number comes up instead of home. I found a fix by going into my contacts and adding a 1 to the beginning of each, but I wondered if there was a setting to go into and select, so i would not have to go in and add a 1 to all of them.
3. Does this phone have a auto answering machine which says I am not here in Japanese? I looked but could not find the setting.
4. Voice mail, is there a way to change the voice mail number to AT&T instead of softbank? Or do I have to call my phone number to check voice mail?
5. CPR, I looked around on the forum and especially looked at the wonderful guide to Keitai created and have come to the conclusion that the 830p is not a phone that needs CPR like the later Softbank phones? Is this true? I have not come to an area that it goes out so i have not been able to check it out yet.
1. Roaming on your home carrier isn't that bad. It doesn't do anything.
2. I think you gotta manually do everything.
3. Check the online manual for answering machine options.
4. Just call your voicemail access number.
5. Not very many people have your phone, in fact of the 10s of 100s of 1000s (customers) they don't have your phone, I think you might be the only one here with it so you just gotta go test it. That's what a lot of us do. Many times I go out of my way test things and report back here (although I don't do that anymore).
