Hey Folks,
I have have a chance to get hold of a nice Sharp 920SH for a good price (less then $300) but I am wondering if it is worth getting it.
First off I know that owning a keitai is all about exclusivity as apposed to functionality in some ways. The trade off of owning a Japanese phone is that it will not be able to surf the web and the later models will need CPR or have MM lockout.
I have gone through all the posts on HOFO regarding this phone over this weekend and understand that the best I can get regarding this phone is calls and SMS unless I send it away to get a repro.
Now what complicates this decision is that I snagged a new in box Vodafone version Sharp 904SH from a local Craigslist advert. I picked this phone up Saturday and after pealing the plastic off the phone and charging it up, placed my AT&T SIM and the cheap I-smartphone2009 sim hack into it and it works perfect. I have a good camera (not as good as my 903SH) but good enough, a screen that is jaw dropping color (It is an aquos) and everything works well (I don't know about the internet but I don't care about that as I have a computer at home (that is what I pay Verizon each month for ) )
I have owned a couple of Softbank phones with the MM lock and the constant repro query. Both are Panasonic phones and I have been able to live with this except that I am not able to change my ring tones while listening to them (I have to select the ringtone and then call myself to choose) also I can turn the answering machine with the Japanese voice on and hear it when I call the phone BUT I am not able to hear any messages left.
Is this a Panasonic thing that it is totally locked down or is this indicative to all current Softbank phones?
What would you do? On one hand the 920SH looks like it has a lovely screen and the phone with its rotating screen is sure to turn heads but on the other hand the screen goes to waste due to the MM lockdown. By contrast the 904SH is older but is almost fully unlocked (I don't care about the web access) and only cost me $120
I have liked the looks of the 920SH but never really thought about owning one because they always seem to go for $350-$700 on eBay.
Also do the 920SH have any problems or defects?
I was reading about a few folks with phones that had the ear piece break and that they had to use Blue Tooth or speaker phone. Is this a common problem?
Thanks for your help
