"One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. It's very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project. . . . Now, the American people, if you put it to them about socialized medicine and gave them a chance to choose, would unhesitatingly vote against it." - Ronald Reagan

    Smartphone WiFi: Major Trend

Mobile advertising agency, AdMob says one of the major trends in 2009 has been the growing share of requests from smartphones and increasing usage of Wi-Fi. In November 2009 in the US, smartphones accounted for 48 percent of mobile Web and application requests, up from 31 percent in November 2008.

Wi-Fi usage has taken off, with 24 percent of requests in the US coming in over a WiFi network in November 2009, compared to 8 percent in November 2008.

I seriously think that if SN was getting this, they should have requested that it include an EVDO Rev. A chipset for use on Sprint's data network, with a fallback to iDEN data if CDMA data is unavailable. Doesn't look like that's gonna happen, though.

Unless they upgrade the data speed of IDEN, I don't see a need to get a smartphone on IDEN. The only viable option will be if both WIFI and IDEN can be on at the same time, so data can be used. But two radios on at the same time will probably drain the battery much faster. In my experience with IDEN over the years, the battery drains fairly quickly due to power consumption of the IDEN radio, so don't see that as a viable option either. Hopefully, Sprint will start upgrading Nextel witih WIDEN.

Not with proper power management. The Blackberry 8350i incorporated this exact setup - an iDEN radio and a WiFi radio that could be operated simultaneously - and I used it in that mode more often than not. I didn't have trouble with my battery life on that device.

Hopefully, Sprint will start upgrading Nextel witih WIDEN.
One only needs to take a quick look around these forums to see why WiDEN is *not* the panacea to Nextel's data problems. No, that's not the answer.

As has been discussed before, WIDEN is OK for spectrum rich deployments. It takes 12 time slots vs 1 for voice. If Sprint/Nextel had no capacity problems, then WIDEN would be OK for checking email. If they can use one timeslot for Boost Unlimited at $50/month why would they use 12 timeslots for $15/month?

An interesting idea is a MiFi setup with 4G/3G/WiFi. Of course you have to carry your MiFi everywhere.

This is exactly what I'm looking at. Clear and now Sprint 4G/3G has been my only ISP for 1 year now. WiFi "N" would be very nice too. Sprint has the 4G/3G data plan down to $59.99/mo for subs in 4G markets.

If/when they get that MiFi shirt pocket size, one could also "belt clip it" making it hassle free.

Battery concerns will limit its usability. I was thinking more of a MiFi you could plug in your car your hotel room or even your house, not necessarily carry it in your pocket.

The 4G/3G MiFi is scheduled for Q1 launch. With any luck those fuel cell batteries will be here sooner than later(Panasonic).

There is also a new 4G WiMAX/LTE compatible "N" router.

I looked at the MWR222, and it seems that the only way it supports 3G/4g is to support 2 Ethernet interfaces into which you can plug the output of a 3G/4G. It does not mention anything about including a 3G/4G modem.
